Hudd and Bale looking like being our most consistent performers still, who would have thunk that a year ago!

In the past we've had some great pre-seasons but then when the real season started we've been shit. I would expect the youngsters to be more up for the pre-season games than the regular first teamers. Its not nice to get battered in a pre-season game but I'm not going to read too much into the results and performances at this stage.

Just got back from the game, thought i'd throw my two-pence in.

If there's one thing this preseason has taught me, Corluka cannot play centre back. His positional sense was really poor today and it left both Daws (first half) and Bassong (second half) scrambling around trying to cover when Charlie went wandering.

I'd like to say, i thought Villareal played some really nice football tonight, there passing was crisp and some of the movement and combinations was pretty breathtaking, reminded me of Chile or Spain in the WC. They were also pretty solid in defense and the only two mistakes i can remember them making led to two goals, one given offside.

Positives for me, Hudd looked fantastic in CM. Almost every time he got the ball he played an simple yet searching pass and i can't remember a single one going wrong.

Bale looked good again when he got put in behind defenders but i thought he looked a bit slow when he was trying to take them on 1-1.

Was pleased to say Gio looked really up for it when he came on, he was making runs and drawing defenders all over the place. He took his goal well and he might have had another had Niko not taken it off his boot. Really hope We give the lad a chance as he seems like he wants to give it a go at least.

Other positives; Rose, Walker, BAE, Hutton, Defoe, Keane, Crouch all looked pretty good. Was particularly impressed with Rose when he came on for Jenas early on, everytime he got the ball he really tried to motor on and start something.

One other negative, aside from the Corluka gripe earlier, i thought Tarrabt put in the worst stint i have seen in ages. Every time he got the ball he tried to take on the entire team, manager, referee and linesman. At one point he actually attempted to take it through about 8 players, lost the ball, then sulkily walked back while villareal broke away. An old gentleman next to me summed it up quite perfectly as, "that boy thinks his shit smells sweeter than most".

Not bothered about the score line, another day, another ref it could have gone the other way. Great to be back at the lane again, was pleased by the turnout today, and the atmosphere wasn't bad either.

Yeah, standard programme fare, I'd expect the features will start with the first league game though...

Gomes - Good to see him back

Hutton - Offensively ok, positionally poor
Daws - Decent enough
Corluka - Not a CB
Naughton - not a LB

Lennon - Barely touched the ball
Hudd - Alright, decent use of the ball at times
Jenas - Shit
Kranjcar - Ok

Keane - Anonymous
Defoe - Weak
--------------------------------

Button - Dodgy
Walker - Excellent, we don't need Richards.
Bassong - Ok
Ekotto - Looked rusty, linked up well with Bale though
Gio - Took his goal well, good movement
Rose - Surprisingly good I thought
Bale - Started well but faded a little
Parrett - Looked good
Taarabt - Looked shit
Crouch - Held the ball up well, something we were desperate for.

You read my mind .....:clap::clap:

What we saw yestarday was Harry's clever plot to force Levy to sign "one or two". He got it right.

Walker impressed me the most, looked very strong and full of confidence. I hope we give the rising stars a chance to shine this season.

I hope people havent got too down about last nights result. The people that booed at the end (a small minority, but a minority that needs a good smack in the mouth) have absolutely no clue.

The problem we had in the first was two fold. First, with two small men upfront, we needed to press the ball very high up. It was pre-season and the players werent ready to do that. When we did have the ball, we built slowly, got into some decent positions but you cant put the ball into the box with them two there. Tactically, it didnt work, but it did work against Liverpool first game of the season last year.

Second problem was we were outnumbered in midfield and were passed around far too easily, and their system allowed them to get in between the midfield and defence.

If anything, this showed that against good technical teams we need to play with either a really high tempo, a really high back line and lots of pressing, or we need to play 4-5-1/4-3-3 with a holding midfielder.

Corluka wasnt too impressive, nor Dawson in the first half. But hopefully it will be a wake up call to some of the players and get them mentally set for a tough but successful season

People were booing at the end of a pre-season friendly??!!

The world has gone mad.

I've stopped taking any notice of friendlies whatsoever since we beat Roma 5-0 and people though we were going to win the league.

Exactly. Losing these friendlies does'nt matter. Remember the pre-season before 2 points, 8 games when we won everything and Bent scored hundred goals. We all saw how much that mattered when the season began.
