Much as I like Levy and what he has done for the club I also think he can be the master of false economy. Haggling over relatively small amounts (in football terms) could really cost us dear, especially now that so many of our EPL rivals have cash to burn. I hope we get Janssen signed up before another club with a less combative negotiating stance step in and put us back to square one yet again.

You have to remember he is exactly the same with all his negotiations, including the ones we do get(you just don't hear about it. Saving £1mil a player bought, and getting and extra mil from every player sold equates to a Christian Eriksen for example.

Point taken, but the influx of TV money has changed the landscape as far as our direct rivals are concerned. If we are anywhere near to signing Janssen I think Levy should bite the bullet before somebody else nabs him from under our noses. Batshuayi, by all accounts, had his heart set on joining us in the same way that Janssen has, and we know how that panned out. We only really need one signing, possibly two, and I've got a nasty feeling Levy's penchant for brinkmanship could see us moving on to lesser and lesser targets which, as I said before, is showing a costly attraction to false economy. What price to have a full and settled squad for a whole pre-season?

Why would Berahino come to be 7th/8th choice forward?

6th choice CF behind Kane, Janssen, Son, Njie, Chadli; 6th choice WF behind Lamela, Erikson, Son, Njie and Chadli

He wouldn't. He'd potentially come in to be a strike partner for Kane.

Different options against different opposition.

I disagree. It hasn't changed at all really as far as our rivals in the Prem are concerned, as it's all very much relative. West Ham and Palace can threaten to chuck as much money round as they like it will make little difference, because the best players will still turn them down. They may well have far more spending power compared to the rest of Europe, but it will make little difference to the Prem because as I say it's all pretty much relative. As for the settled squad bit, I agree. I do think however Janssen will probably be sorted early this week.

Why would he be behind Son, Njie and Chadli though?

There was a Kane documentary on 5Live before the Euros and they had Pleat on it, and he was talking about the very "interesting and intuitive" partnership Kane and Berahino had playing for England age groups. This is obviously one of the reasons we were interested in him, because Pleat definitely has access to the conversations about targets at a high level.

Whether his baggage has put us off, who knows? Looks like the Stoke talk has cooled a little...

Do you think Palace or West Ham would struggle to sign a player of Janssen's calibre, or Janssen himself if we were not after him and he hadn't expressed a preference to join us?

I think if no better teams were in for him of course he would, but isn't that the point? They can already sign players that no better teams are interested in. The only difference the new TV deal has made is that those same players will now cost more.

I guess I'm just expecting another team to come in now and bid more than we could sew up the Janssen deal for now and we'll end up faffing around for another 2 months. I hope it doesn't turn into a real mess for a relatively small amount of money.

It's worse than that though Trix. With their mouthy chairman and son all the world knows West Ham have money burning a hole in their pockets. Prices will go up accordingly. Not quite as bad at Palace but letting it be known they are prepared to spend more than 30 million on one player will increase the price of everyone else they express an interest in.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Got to agree. I think that it would be a false economy for Levy to be mucking about over a couple of million.

Exactly. People complain about individual examples when we haggle but it's the very policy that enables us to punch above our weight when you compare our relative spending power. It means you have to accept a %loss rate that Chelski never need to and I'm willing to do that to get our 'bonus' players that we'd never be able to afford otherwise.
