I'm personally very happy with how our defense shapes up at this point. I think we have a potentially very good starting duo (Fazio/Vertonghen), good-to-very-good depth (Kaboul/Chiriches) and some nice high-upside talents (Dier, Davies). I can't really complain as it just seems like such a really well-conceived and implemented plan to right what I felt was the biggest wrong of last season. We seem to have great cover at all positions which should really help deal with the grueling EL and Cup competitions.

....and helped by the fact we have bought 4 new defenders (Fazio, Dier, Davies and GK Vorm plus of course the US guy arriving next summer). Think thst means Poch wasn't very happy with our defence when he arrived !

Yeah, most definitely. We heard some ITK reports that it'd be addressed over 2-3 windows but honestly, after one window it's looking markedly better. I think getting an uber athletic, strong CB to replace Kaboul would be ideal, but obviously those types of CBs are rare and when they are available cost a pretty penny. However, with how Dier's looking, he could eventually turn into that player.

Dier has impressed me - I know its only against 2 mid/lower PL sides and an EL side but he seems not to have exhibited any major weaknesses so far. Think he still needs a bit of careful handling this season, but imo by next season he should be ready for most opposition (and Kaboul's replacment by then).

Add in Veljkovic (who can cover cm as well) and even Fryers can handle many EL matches and that's a good near term batch of cb's to have....and a few more coming through in a year or two

It wouldn't surprise me to see (next season) Dier take Kaboul's place and Yedlin take Dier's place as back up DR. Question is where does that leave Naughton & Fredericks?

Given his start I don't see why he wouldn't believe he could be. Great to have options.
But his great start has been at DR not DC. I think Dier will be a utility player this season to give him game time & experience but doubt he will be a first 11 player when other are fully fit, especially at CB.

If Walker was fit I reckon Naughton would have already been sold. I think we'll keep him until January.

I think Fazio's arrival is good news for those of us who would like Chiriches to remain at the club. Fazio is a like for like replacement for Dawson. He has very similar strengths (good tackler, strong in the air) and weaknesses (slow, poor passer) as Dawson. Chiriches however has pace and good ball playing and carrying skills. He's basically Vertonghen's understudy in the team now.

If Musacchio had signed for us then Chiriches was the obvious one to go. That didn't happen so I would be very surprised if that doesn't mean a reprieve for Vlad.

Poor passer? From what I've seen Fazio is an excellent passer. How often have you watched him play?

And tbf Dawson wasn't actually a particularly poor passer and some of his long balls would of had people give all kind of credit if they came from Tom Huddlestone or Luka Modric. The main problem with his passing was that it often interrupted progressive build up for more risky, possibly possession losing long balls. But he clearly had ability in hitting balls long, it is probably why he did it so much.

Fredericks is over 21 so we need to sell off more over 21's to allow him to stay at Spurs in the squad http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/ind...ad-evolution-over-the-transfer-window.111660/. However with the amount of RB cover we now have, he may not get many games so probavly needs a good loan - but not sure he has enough experience to get a PL loan !

Naughton would be on my sell list if Walker was fit. Probably Walker's injury is too uncertain to let Naughton go now until we re-assess Walker, so maybe January when Naughton can leave

I'm not sure I agree because if we do sell Vlad I think it will be because he wants to leave for personal reasons rather than we are actively trying to sell him.

WTF are DR and DC, are you American by any chance or just a lazy typer? ;-)

Wish people would use the proper names for players positions or proper abbreviations.

I did think the same, but was letting it go. What happened to RB, CB, LB, CM, RM, LM, RWF, LWF, Cf.
