Well hope he really cocks up like he does in the premiership!! I used to think he was the best ref in the league, but how my opinion has changed!! Made some right howlers this season not just in our games but others!

I should never hope for a ref to completely ruin a game....

but I hope he does just so he can prove to the world that he shouldn't be a top ref.

I told you guys this a few weeks ago. He got it because most of the other top refs did the semis or had teams from their country involved and because he's been very good in FIFA and UEFA games. They don't care what he does in his league, they care what he does when he does games for them.

Good god, one of the worst referees I have seen gets the biggest game of club football in the world. It seems the selectors fail to see past his authoritative manner and see the obvious fact that it doesn't really matter how assertive you are on the pitch if you get a lot of major decisions wrong.

What next? Gary Glitter passing a CRB check?

The fact is he's the best ref when it comes to talking to the players and demanding respect.

And you know how much the FA love their 'respect' campaign. Its a shame he cant make a correct decision.

Terrible ref.

Yes, seems like he got this almost by default, because of some better referees were given semis in CL and EL.
But I don't think he has been "very good" in FIFA and UEFA games. Austria v Poland in Euro 2008, Brazil v South Africa in last year's Confederations Cup spring to mind from the high profile games. Fiorentina v Sporting Lisbon in the final play-offs for the past season's CL was another of his increasingly typically erratic performances.

He just happens to be England's No.1 referee as far as UEFA is concerned, he was not involved in this year's semis and they needed a neutral "top" ref for the match between teams from Italy and Germany.

He got the penalty decision right in that Euro game. Some may see it as harsh, but UEFA came out and said they told the refs to call that. As for the Confed Cup, I think you mean Brazil/Egypt and the late penalty and red. He got that call right. If you're a conspiracy guy you could claim how he got to that penalty and red was wrong, but he got the call right. You just cited two games in which he got the big call right. If you use decisions he got right that were controversial, then no ref can ever be seen as good.

Obviously he's been shit in the Premier League this season, but he's been good (if not great) in Europe.

In theory of course that decision to give the last minute pen to the hosts (Austria) in the opening match v Poland was correct, but in reality everyone knew that this kind of shirt tugs happened several times in that game alone and happen regularly in almost every match. Do we get penalties given for these fouls in every match? Of course not - and that is when this kind of decision in favour of the higher profile team becomes controversial and morally wrong.

But of course Webb does not always err on the side of a bigger team only.

The Confed Cup game in South Africa that I referred to was indeed v Egypt, you're right. And the main mistake from him was the earlier missed goal by Brazil in the first half when the ball clearly crossed the line before the GK pushed it out (and all commentators said so too), but he dismissed it in his usual self-important manner, without consulting linesmen etc. He then must have seen the incident or it was pointed out to him at half-time, and was keen to compensate Brazil in the 2nd half. Hey presto, out came the red card for Egypt and the 90th min pen for Brazil to win the match.

The Fiorentina v Sporting Lisbon was another example of erratic display from Webb, when he denied Viola two clear penalties without booking a player for diving even though the player (Jovetic) protested clearly, then suddenly started giving them more decisions for non-fouls from Sporting in the middle of the pitch.

These are the kind of performance that I would not expect from a truly top referee.

At the World Cup the minimum I expect from him is to cause a break in diplomatic relations: there is a chance that his decisions could lead to war on a limited front but hopefully not global.

To be fair, with two big teams against each other, and no Man Utd or Liverpool to hideously favour, he'll have to ref it straight...
