What do we need to win ‘titles’ ?

Ultimately we need oil money. Man C have bought the title, albeit playing nice football. Guardiola is a coach who has always had ridiculously stupid budgets.

Ultimately we need a home fortress, no injuries to key players, and a bit of luck. As does any team.

It is funny how we started knocking on the door of being a regular top 4 team around the time shitty hit the lottery, and now we’re hitting on being consistent title challengers but they have literally turned the cheat codes on with the embarrassment of player options they have.

It’s just not possible to compete with their depth, and depth is a huge part of winning trophies.
If shitty went back to their true form, we would win the title within the next few seasons (given our squad is kept together and sufficiently supplemented).

We can win a title every now and again with the model we have. I didn’t think the signings we made in the summer was enough to improve us sufficiently and I said so at the time. I came up against a lot of opposition for that. We signed defenders but spent 10 million on a 32 year old to boost our attack, not good business.

We could and should have won trophies but we decided as a club, that we are too good for the FA cup, the league cup and the Europa cup. I don't know where the fuck this idea comes from. We've only won the league twice and been in European cup once as champions.

Nearly 10 years without a trophy is bollocks, we need to win something and stop making excuses.

We got to the semi of the fa cup last year and the final of the league cup the year before. Do you think we puposefully lost those games or that we lost them because we thought we were too good? Or did the other team beat us because they simply played better on the day?
Our lack of trophies is down to our lack of consistency.

So we need to get consistant then especially if we consider ourselves a top team. I know you think we need to win trophies so I don't know what you are taking issue with.

The thread is about winning the league. It's not about winning a cup.

"But it has to be said it is a reasonable assumption to be made that a player who has scored more goals than any other in a calendar year in Europe should be in the mix for titles and trophies." From the op.

Probably the same thing as you want us to do in every other thread you make, spend serious money.

I take issue with the idea that we do not try to win trophies. Which is absurd. Ofcourse we do. We need more consistencey and a bit of luck. We've lost 7 fa cup semi finals on the trot and last two league cup finals. Maybe the players need to be stronger mentally aswell.
You never know it may well have been that going from playing at whl to playing at wembley meant that our results suffered there. We have improved playing at wembley. Hopefully that might help in going that one or two steps further.

Exactly this, people need to stop pretending we don't try to win the the FA cup or the league cup since we have gone close quite a few times since we won our last trophy.

Need someone like fabregas at his peak in central midfield and another quality wing forward/striker

Sure the players need to improve their mental game but there is many a time we crashed out of cup competitions because we played under strength teams in cup competitions and gone out in the eariler rounds. Then when we crash out certain people are pleased that we lost so we can concentrate on top 4, and get more money to buy players to win trophies that they already discredited.

Will take far more than that to win the league. City have won every game bar one draw. Most by a mile. We would have to be doing the same or better, winning every single game, including against them. I fail to see one or two players making that difference.

I am sure this has been pointed out, but I think the generally accepted way of winning titles is to accumulate more points over the course of a season than any of the other competitors.

We have to rotate players and we have to give younger players a chance. We can't play our strongest 11 every game. When we face weaker oposition in the cups we use it as an opportunity to do these things. Sometimes it backfires.
Every other team in the premier league does this.

You can also do it by accumulating the same amount of points as anybody else but score more goals and or concede fewer goals.

I think this is an over simplification though - how much did Chelsea and Arsenal spend on attacking players last summer? We have outscored both of them.

And, we were the top scoring team last season, and 2nd highest in '15-'16.

Luck. Less injuries.

That's enough for a trophy. City are too good to take the league from but we're already better than teams that have won cup trophies the last few seasons. (Utd and Gooners last season to name 2)

My concern is that City might win the lot this season, and who can stop them?

Guardiola won't stay for ages. He'll probably be off again in a couple of years time. They've been spending more than everyone else for several years but only now they've been dominating.
