Was having a discussion about Berbatov earlier and the subject came up of his ‘genius’ qualities. Got me thinking just how many of those we’ve had over the years - and whether some are debatable.

Which of our current or former players would you describe as being ‘genius’ (in the footballing sense, unless we’ve got some Mensa members I have missed)?

I think the undeniable ones I settled on were Modric, Gazza, Hoddle. Of course, could certainly be older ones in there.

Eriksen and Berbatov very likely were genius as well. Hadn’t thought of Bale…

Hoddle, Gazza, Bale from the modernish era could do things that left you in awe. We’ve had a lot of very good players eg Modric, Ossie and Berba, but genius is something different.

People always connect it to creativity but I think Ledley King was genius in how he defended. Always one step ahead and could read a game / strikers intentions far better than most.

Not sure I’d call Bale genius, he had pace and power that set him apart but I wouldn’t call that genius. If I was to look at the forward line I’d probably have to go with Teddy Sheringham, he didn’t have the pace or power of other strikers but he had a picture in his head and was always one step ahead.

Closest in our squad at the moment would have to be Kane or (ducks quickly) Ndombele. Some of the passes that guy not only saw but pulled off were a different level just a shame he didn’t have the passion / drive to go with his creativity.

Agree with all those and would add Greaves and John White from earlier times. I started aged 9 in October 1960 of the Double Winning Season. Kane if he stays will likely be recognised as our greatest ever player. If Son's outstanding form continues he may well find a place in this illustrious list.

Kane -Simple.

Kane can be a CB , a midfield playmaker , class no10 , class Right winger with his crosses and ofcourse a world class striker.

Kane can even be a left wing back if he chooses to - he will go to his training ground and work on it and be a left wing back

Not every genius has to be a natural. Kane’s genius is his technique & basics which makes him trainable for any type of player he wants to be

Yep absolutely, Kane is our biggest football genius since Bale.
Those two are phenomenal, and then of course so many before them

Modric springs to mind first. What a player. Not my favourite due to emotional connections but I think the best spurs player of my lifetime.

Hoddle was my childhood hero and had the skill and touch to match anyone.

Berbatov whilst not at the level of the above two was a majestic football who could do things others could only dream of

Gazza was the only person on earth worthy of taking over from Hoddle. It's a shame that he will probably be know lm for his troubles because he was unplayable when he was on.

Chris waddle had one particular season at spurs that was so good I reckon he had 10 genuine goal of the season contenders. The most underrated winger ever. He was as good as anyone.

David ginola was the French sexy version of Chris waddle.

Rafa Van Der vaart maybe a controversial choice but I don't think he was far off. His movement and intelligence were so influential at times.

Christian Eriksen maybe now at Man Utd but that doesn't take away from his vision and influence on games.
