If Torres had nt joined Liverpool then he would have been a good replacement. Now????

Not too sure. Its ok bringing players in from diff leagues around the world but its always a gamble they will settle in.

We can replace Berba with a creative midfielder who can drive the team. Berba is a pretty unique striker due to the amount of chances he creates. The reason he'd be such a big loss is our midfield doesn't create enough. create.
You think we won't upgrade our midfield next season?

I agree with the Midfield talk, if berbatov goes i would rather throw the cash at getting a better midfield sorted before worrying about the strikers, the midfield has improved slightly from last year, but it is still no where near good enough to be pushing for a top 4 spot, we really do lack someone with creativity and skill (hudd has the passing range but is still not good enough yet IMO but is moving along nicley)

No. Huddlestone has fantastic composure.

But Yanno, composure isn't necessarily the most important ingredient for a CM in a CM 2. Energy, versatility and efficiency are probably more important.

There are times when if Huddlestone was any more "composed" you'd have to wheel out a chaise longue and light a Montecristo No5.

If you watch Huddlestone does need time to play his passes and doesn't have that Riquelme ability to play clever short/medium passes quickly along the deck. Invariably when Huddlestone tries this he gives the ball away.

He's young, he should improve, but I don't think he'll ever be that kind of player. As I have said for quite a while, for me it's not just his physical mobility that is his problem, I think his biggest problem is that his thought process is not quick.

Technique ad passing range are superb, no question. But his thought process isn't.

Kenyne Jones, Dirk Kuyt,Micheal Owen, Santa Cruz realistic potentiol replacements not that i want Berby to go at all, any of these 4 along with Keaneo and Benty would be pretty good, if we improved the rest of the team where we need to!

Jones has had a very off-on season. He is still relative unproven, but could come good over time.

Kuyt? Remember how we were linked with Kuyt before signing Berbatov - i'm happy we got the latter as I'm not a Kuyt fan and I think he would be big, big downgrade.

Owen - a shade of the player he was and is totally the opposite to Berbatov in every sense of the word.

Santa Cruz - good player, but again would fail to fill the void left by a world-class player.

We have to remember that there are not many strikers better than Berbatov. Rooney, Torres, Adebayor, Ibramhimovic, Henry, Eto'o are all in the same bracket but I would struggle to put them in any sort of order.

We cannot underestimate how lucky we are to have a player of Berbatov's class. We are and have been very lucky and we should remember that as Berbatov could easily walk his way into any team in the world.

As I wrote in the "Huddle" thread, I'm sure Ramos will be working on Big Tom's speed of release. There will be occasions when he needs to receive the ball, know where he's going to play it, and release it - almost in one movement. This was a hallmark of Ramos' Sevilla team, and can be worked on in training - with all our midfielders.

But Huddlestone did fizz a couple of excellent and difficult first-time balls into our strikers on Saturday. And pre-season, he frequently spotted Darren Bent's runs early and played him in.

So, I'm not convinced that the Hud's problem is slowness of thought. Indeed, when he was on loan at Wolves, his manager - one Glenn Hoddle - played him as an attacking CM on several occasions. Hoddle also stated on Saturday that he thought Huddlestone could stake down a regular CM space at Spurs.

In short, Huddlestone is the best passer in our squad. Whether he's good enough to be our creative CM, only time and our summer purchases will tell. However, Ramos has already shown a willingness to play him both as the creative CM and as a CB - two positions where Jol did not play him. If Ramos creates a squad next season enabling us to play fast, attacking football down the flanks, with attacking FBs like Hutton & Bale, and a genuine left-winger like Capel, then Huddlestone will have far more passing options than he currently has. And it may wll be that Big Tom's speed of thought suddenly looks significantly faster....

Huntalaar! saw him score against psv last week and he had everything! Great in the air, on the deck. Good team player who knows where the goal is! Awesome!

As your 5-a-side team captain, I'm definately ruling you out.

You're rubbish. And always injured.

Darren Bent is our ready made replacement for Berba. Sell Berba and buy a new midfield, we'll score less goals but let less in, and a better all round team.

I can't believe you just said that. Huddlestone is the only player on a wavelength with Berbatov in the entire squad I cannot believe you said that. He is the ONLY player in the squad who picks out Berba's runs I just..... I just can't believe you said that.:snooty::doh::hand:

Tell me a center forward in the world who is capable of making those two through balls that Berbatov passed to Keane against Chelsea (4:4) and I will answer the question.

Berbatov is two great players in one: a great attacking midfielder and a great goalscorer (Spurs fans don't know him as a great goalscorer as /1/ he plays a diferent role here and /2/ lacks good service - at Bayer and for Bulgaria his goals to games ratio was among the best in Europe). So, to replace Berbatov Spurs have to buy two players or to sign Ibrahimovic who, pace what many in England say, is a great great player. The latter cannot happen though. Hence, Spurs have to sign two players: a very very good creative midfielder and a very good finisher (Bent is good enough for scoring goals though).

Berbatov has a different class, and I do not want him to leave.

If he left, it is difficult to replace him with a player with his qualities, but there are good replacements with other qualities.

This is a good thread. All be it a little depressing, I for one would hate to see Berba leave, but thinking about these things could be good for us in the long run. The hurt and dissapointment that we'll all have whenever/ifever he goes will be massive. I'll be happier if we have threads like this, suggesting where things could improve should the unthinkable happen.

Here's another scenario to add to the discussion. Our prize money for this season along with money from Premier League and endorsements will net us upwards of 5o million. Thats a hell of a ot of money. Berba is realistically not leaving Spurs for less than 30 million. I know that not all money will be spent on players but bloody hell, thats a hell of a lot of cash that our board, who regularly back their managers in the transfer market can use to entice a player of the standard of Berba. My suggestion is Benzema. I know he has said that he wants to play in Italy but this guy is worth chasing. He has impressed me when I've seen French football this season and especially impressed me against Man utd. Add to that his young age and we've got somebody who really could be an incredibly exciting prospect for our club.

According to Guillem Balague, Fabiano is available for eleven million Euros plus wages (because he's largely owned by one of those dodgy consortia).
http://www.skysports.com/experts/expert_story/0,19793,12087_3330970,00.html

Balague thinks Fabiano will go to Real Madrid, which would be great because they'd be less likely to come after Berba.

If Fabiano did end up at Spurs, it wouldn't be as a replacement for Berba - because Kanoute plays the Berba role for Sevilla, not Fabiano.
