Who would you have to replace Gomes?

I watch a lot of football and its easy to see that maybe most keepers dont make the great saves he does, many arent as erratic and lead to a clear nervousness within the back four. watching him every week maybe helps rather than hinders my view as I dont only see the mistakes that the media seem to broadcast.

many fans see the one against chelsea, madrid et al and claim he is a clown, we see both sides and have a fairer evaluation but he is still far from solid. The saves he makes may be incredible but if he were to let in a percentage of those and save the ones he should, not only would the defence be more confident but im sure we would gain more points in the bigger games too.

Am I the only person who thinks that any GK we sign will be a nervous wreck a la Gomes in fairly short order if they continue to have Dawson right in front of them ?

Play Kaboul and another commanding centre half and whoever is our GK will look infinitely better.

I don't think bringing in a new GK really makes a difference, we need our players to protect Gomes more.

It happened to Robinson, he was great then lost his confidence. But if we do bring anyone in I like Smeichal or Tim Howard.

We just need to limit the shots that come at our goalkeeper, I would be surprised if we sold Gomes.

This

Same thing happened to robbo. last season the players pressed this season we don't, we have 3 players in our team who press properly wilson, sandro and VDV everyone else constantly gives the opposing players at least 5 yards to do want they want .

But about gomes he is the least of our problems and i dont wan him replaced.

The amount of games I watch and you see us just let the opposition tee up shots at will. Its so frustrating.I am sure we are up there with the teams that take the most shots at goal. We let teams come so close to our area before there is a sniff of pressing.

Am I the only person on the planet that thinks we should keep Gomes because he's probably prevented more goals than he's let in due to mistakes?

The problem with Gomes isn't just his mistakes it is that he's not very good at organizing the defense, and his mistakes leave the players in front of him with little confidence in him.

Gomes makes way more saves in a game than keepers like Hart or Van der Sar, but that's more because those keepers keep their backline organized so that the opposition have fewer chances.

That's a fair point, and an aspect of the role I wasn't really considering.

I still can't see many keepers out there that we could replace him with, that we could realistically get...and I still think he's one of the best keepers in the Premiership.

If we really want rid then why not give Pletikosa a go?

I think there is a massive element of truth in this. Gomes makes some spectacular saves, but I want a keeper who is 7 out of ten in all aspects of goal keeping if that makes sense. Its like Gomes is a 9 out for ten shot stopping, but 4/5 out of ten in like commanding his area and organising his defence infront of him. Not to mention the rushes of blood to the head, its happening too many times.

I just want a steady eddie who puts in solid displays week in week out for the most part and isn't compromised by a lack of confidence or impulsive decision making.

Made the same point in another thread, yesterday.

While you may have a point, the above issue is a real concern, and one that is exposing Gomes a lot - and it isn't his duty to tell his defence/team as a whole to press the ball more in the ten yards in front of the penalty area.

What you are missing here SP (at least in your post above) is that although Gomes is not at fault for conceeding wonder goals scored when we refuse to press the other team early, he is very much at fault for the string of howlers he has let in recently. I try not to over-react to bad performances and generally I stick up for our players/team, however there is no excuse for some of Gomes' recent performances. If you conceed one or two poor goals a season people get over it, as you can't expect a keeper never to make a mistake, but this looks to be very different.

I'd also argue that a good GK does play a huge role in keeping his defence organised and telling his team to push up to stop long shots coming in.

No.
I wasn't missing it at all.
Just making a wholly different point.

DIEGO BENAGLIO

Frank Rost, Carlos Kameni, Tim Howard

All affordable and would come, and would be better than Gomes.
