Why Upson?

Why are so many people on here hoping for us to get Upson? I have to say Upson is one of the most overated players at the moment and offers nothing more than the CBs we already have.. yes EVEN Rocha...

What has Upson done at almost 30 to obtain such a reputation?
with Kings injury some say we need an experienced PL defender... Upson has only played at most 4 seasons top flight football one with Arse, 2 years with City and 1 with Wet Spam... At 29 years old he has only played 200 odd games with not even all of them in the PL!! Thats as much as King has and hes been injured for a vast part of his career and is younger than Upson!!

is he really the best we can get?? I for one think Corluka can do a job as CB with Woodgate, King and Daws completing the line up...

However, should Arry not see that as an ideal line up other CBs i think we should go for other targets... My choices would be...

Agger, with 18 months to run on his contract i reckon we should put in a cheeky bid... at 24 he has time on his side and can be established as a first choice CB in the long run and has a good level of PL experience.

Marquez, at the same age as Upson has achieved more than Upson could dream of, with Barca having Pique and Puyol as their prefered CB pair i reckon we could prize Marquez off them but it may cost about 8 mill... the plus side is that Marquez can also play the DMF role that we have been dying for...

Onuoha, at 22 he prob wont fit the critera of proven player but reckon he is a good punt, can play CB, RB and LB and with all the imports Citeh gonna have can see him getting moved along... He seems to have the same abilty as Micah Richards but has been hampered by injuries...

Yobo, at 28 years old has a lot of PL experience and has been playing well for several years... would probably cost same amount as Upson... although maybe tough to prize him away from Everton but could be done as Everton seem to be strapped for cash....

Probably because there's a chance that he'd be available.

This window seems to be a striker's window for some reason.

Fabio Capello, an Italian (who knows one or two things about the art of defending) has been picking Upson ahead of our very own Woody so he can't be as bad as some seem to make out. He also plays LCB a position that only King Ledley seems capable of playing. He also knows the EPL and would not need time, like a defender brought in from Europe, to adapt.

People are talking about him because he is a realistic target, and I don't think your targets are realistic to be honest.

Agger and Marquez would never join us. Everton would demand a massive fee for Yobo and they're doing well at the moment.

Onuoha might be a possibility with City likely to buy but I don't know anything about him to comment on his quality.

Personally, I think Upson is a great defender. He's been a man mountain for West Ham this season. He's another player whose career has been blighted by injuries. When he first came through at the Arse, he was very, very highly rated (to be honest, I'll be quite suprised if they don't come in for him). Together (and free from injury!), he and Woodgate would be immense. That said, I'm a fan of the idea of bringing Glen Johnson in and moving Corluka into the centre alongside Woodgate...

I've always overrated Upson. However, as it's been pointed out, we desperately need a centre back this window and he's English, young and knows the Premier League. Personally, I'd prefer Distin if we could get him cheap.

Probably because he knows Woodys history with injuries?

Was Woody at Madrid when Capello was there?

Nobody on this board knows even 1/10 as much what maks a good centre half than Fabio Capello, if he rates him as the third best (fit) centre half in the country behind Ferdinand and Terry, then he must be plaing pretty well the last year or so.

DILLUSIONAL:bang:

None of those players you have mentioned will come to a team currently fighting a relegation battle when they could more than likely play for a other champion league sides or a team battling for honours!!

We do need a quality available (for UEFA) centre back though and Upson fits the bill. Age doesn't come in to it although it's only recently that we got over the ageism by signing Woody. I would like to see Matty Upson come in to stabilise our defence alongside Woody or Dawson, leaving King to sort himself out.

I thought Wheater was good when playing us earlier in the season. Was impressed with him and think he is fairly young 22-24. Don't know how he has been playing since our match though tbh.
