I think the midfield we played against pompey will be our favoured one with Palacios a direct replacement for Zokora. I think the position most hotly contested will be the LM one.

O'hara has been playing well there though Bentley should give us more creativity when he hopefully finds his feet.

So
O'hara/Bentley Modric Palacios Lennon

What they said. I still want an outright tough tackling DM. However, Palacios intercepting and controlling the midfield will work. Hopefully it will be tied up shortly due to the medical leaks and such.

We already have one of those in Didier Zokora. He just hasn't had the right player alongside him, so everyone expects him to do the role of a holding midfielder. I honestly think Zokora is about the best destroyer type of defensive midfielder we could hope for. I think he's a better player than Cattermole too, so we'll be stronger in the middle than Wigan now. To get a better player than Zokora, we will have to be in the top 4.

I think Palacios is just what we need because, not only is he very strong, but he has the positional sense too. With him in the side we will at least have better options in midfield. I'd still like another holding midfielder to cover for him though. Not this month but in the summer. Someone young coming through. Although i'm still not sure if Huddlestone is that man. If he could learn from Palacios' positional awareness, he could be the perfect competition in that role.

I don't really understand this; a holding midfielder is a defensive midfielder.

I never really get this either. I think they're just new buzz words for positions.

People want:

A midfield destroyer
A box-tobox midfielder
A defensive midfielder
A holding midfielder

But they also want them to play with our playmaking midfielder - Modric.

What about all our attacking midfielders?

There's only 1 position up for grabs because like it or not, we need to play with 2 strikers, we need to play with Modric and we need balance on the left.

That means it's one of Palacios, Zokora or Appiah to line up alongside Modric and although we could have them all in the squad (great!) we have to treat them as all playing the same position and that is bossing the midfield when Modric goes forward probing.

Isn't an attacking midfielder just another name for a playmaking midfielder? Just to throw further confusion onto the matter!

Whatever happened to the days of a "central midfielder" who, you know, did a bit of everything...

Our transfers don't take long at all. It's an illusion. The illusion is caused by the internet. It is really as simple as that. Here's why.

Reason 1: Every club's transfers take the same amount of time. That club's supporters think the transfers are taking forever, because they have spent days/week combing through every shard of rumour and being told by breathless "ITK" artists that their own club's transfers are all "done deals", so they assume that a transfer can be done in a few days. It can't. They take a few weeks. That's why the transfer window is a few weeks long.

These fans are not poring over other clubs' transfer rumours, so they perceive that their own club's transfers are taking longer. They aren't. It's bullshit. It's an illusion. 100% an illusion. I am not saying that our club does transfers fast. Just that every club does transfers at the same speed.

Reason 2: Before internet message boards, almost the first that 95% of a club's fans would hear of a transfer would be when it appeared in the newspaper. It would appear to have happened in a couple of days. That was also an illusion. In fact, it had taken weeks. But the fans didn't know about it, so they would be pleasantly surprised.

Nowadays, every genuine transfer, plus 50 bullshit journo-inventions for every real one, is trawled all over the papers, sport websites and message-boards for weeks before it happens. A hundred fans with absolutely no inside info whatsoever post bullshit one-line posts saying "I am positive Arshavin will sign" or "it will never happen".

All this creates an illusion of urgency. But it's all crap. Nearly all transfers take weeks to negotiate. The only exceptions are cases when one club poaches another club's transfer immediately prior to its conclusion. And we pounced upon Modric because we got tipped off that he was going to move. That's just about the only recent exception I can think up. Other than that, all transfers take weeks. They have always taken weeks. It's just that, until the past 2-3 years, we didn't know about it.

And there is nothing more to the panic than that. It's all bullshit. Take a pill.

I agree in part. Bentley didn't take long at all once the fee was agreed (3 days) it just seemed like forever because I think we made about 3 or 4 lower bids over the course of 2 weeks.

Hutton's took an age but that was obviously his indecision rather than Spurs messing around.

Generally once we sort the fee out, the player is at Spurs within a day (Pavlyuchenko) and up on the website by the next day.

If Palacios doesn't appear with the shirt today, start worrying, because from medical to official doesn't usually take more than a few hours.

I don't really understand this; a holding midfielder is a defensive midfielder.

Different types though. Zokora is more in the Mascharano mould where he attacks the player on the ball. He's still a defensive midfielder, but one who covers a lot of ground. He'll attack the player on the ball. Where Palacios is more in the Alonso mould, although he has different abilities, he sits and protects the back four better. His role is more in reading the game then covering so much ground.

Both are defensive midfielders like Diop and Diarra were for Harry at Portsmouth. Whether we play both together in all games and find a new role for Modric remains to be seen. But i would always go for Palacios and Modric as first choice. But Zokora gives us a good option of either a 5 man midfield or just to add extra defensive cover, depending on the opposition etc.

I agree Palacious and Modric in the middle all day long, does bring an interesting discussion though, what about Jenas, Huddlestone, Zokora and O'Hara...? There is not enough room on the subs bench for all 4 of them.

I still think we need a natuarally left footed left winger who has played in that position for most of their career i.e. Downing. I have never rated the guy but I am fed up with putting square pegs in round holes like putting Bentley on the left.

Palacios deal agreed

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for the transfer of Wilson Palacios from Wigan Athletic.

Personal terms have been agreed and a medical completed, we now await the Honduran international receiving his work permit before completing his registration.

The midfielder made 41 appearances for the Latics after joining in January, 2008 having started the 2007/08 campaign on loan with Birmingham City, where he featured on eight occasions.

The 24-year-old had previously played for Honduran top-flight side Olimpia where he scored 32 goals in 102 appearances.

I posted this in the itk thread the other day

I think against stronger teams it'll be

modric--palacios--zokora--lennon

and weaker teams

bale/o'hara--modric--palacios--lennon
