Would we benefit from selling Modric this summer?

Why are people so overwhelmingly confident that selling Modric means that the incoming transfer money will be spent on a high level replacement? I have an incredbily difficult time believing that we will spend 25 million pounds on someone like Eriksen (though I rate him very highly).

If Modric goes, I fear it will be done later in the window, giving us little time to line up a replacement. If he is sold, he should be out the door as soon as the window opens. Unfortunately, recent transfer windows has shown that we like to wait until the last days of August to get deals done. That simply isn't an effective strategy if we decide we need to replace our best player in the 11th hour, since: A.) A number of the more desirable replacements will have already been sold, B). Clubs will hold us up for a massive ransom, C). No time to acclimate new player into squad.

The same argument goes for selling Bale or anyone else in the first team. We shouldn't do it unless we have targets lined up and we are ready to spend to get them in.

I've been a huge fan of Modric since I first saw him play for Dinamo Zagreb. He is also one of a small group of players that I desperately wanted to see in a Spurs' shirt that we actually subsequently bought (the others being Rebrov, Bale & KP Boateng). I was delighted when Levy refused to sell him last summer. Sadly though his recent performances show that he simply isn't interested in playing for Spurs anymore. He no longer makes any attempt to tackle or intercept the ball and doesn't even seem to bother to make himself available to receive passes anymore. The time has come to cash in.

If we can replace him with Eden Hazard we could move VDV into Modric's position and have Hazard playing in the hole. We'd be slightly weaker defensively but this would be more than compensated by the increased goal threat. As I doubt that we can keep Adebayor we should replace him with a striker who is able to track back and contribute in defence such as Clint Dempsey. Overall I think we'd be stronger and make a profit in both transfer fees and wages than if we try to hang on to a disinterested Modric.

Well after Harry saying how he wants 11 committed players now till the end of the season, it will be interesting if he picks Modric at QPR this weekend.

Personally, I would still choose him because we actually need him if we are to finish on a high at retain a Champions League spot - no point cutting our noses off at this crucial stage.

Felmani26 ,

Here is a question for you . Consider it and tell me if you still think he should play against QPR .

If Modric really is planning on moving to Chelsea next season and not Man Utd like most of us expect , would he want Spurs or Chelsea to finish in the CL places ?

But look at the circumstances. Modric's apparent "dip" in form has coincided with Redknapp's switch to 442 or 4411 with Bale, lennon, Modric.

And nearly all of Modric's worst performances come when we play away from him in similar tactics.

Its has yes, and there is no getting away from that - and again I agree.

Disagree.....he has been good and bad in all different types of formations and midfield partners. Two seasons ago he was magnificent in a 4-4-2 with Tommy,a midfield duo that should never really have worked, i can also recall good performances likewise this season, Newcastle H,Liverpool H in a 4-4-2,....Luka has to take a look at his own performances recently and regain his zip and hunger, its all too many excuses imo, he must step up or get dropped.

Yes its time to go, he's been going through the motions for the second part of the season and he's been well advised. Did well first half of the season so people think he's professional and has handled the disappointment of not getting his dream move maturely.

Second half of the season he has taken his foot off the gas and lately he doesn't even deserve to start. But his camp have obviously played this well enough, he'll get his move this summer and I don't think I would even start him against QPR.

This is the reaction his camp probably want as it takes the pressure off Levy trying to keep him.

Sell him to the highest bidder, in fact sell him to City.

THIS

Neither Ledley or Luca should start Saturday. How bloody sad is that

But BC, if Harry was here for the long term what would be the point if Harry continued to turn his back playing in him in a three?

I know what the answer is though ;)

As some of you will know, I was absolutely insistent that he must not be sold, last Summer - specifically meaning at that time.

Now, I have no issues, just so long as the following conditions are met:
1) We are seen to be in control of the situation.
2) We screw every available penny out of the situation.
3) He either goes abroad or to Citeh (to the latter for a massive surcharge). Absolutely not to United and absolutely never to Chelsea.
4) We as fans collectively issue him with a leaving message, not booing him, not being angry, but making it clear that he was well on the way to being a Lane legend, but that his behaviour last Summer, and his recent performances (which, as Pinky says, have probably been orchestrated), have left a horrible taste in the mouth, and we now regard him as little better than BerbaGit.
5) We have an exciting young replaement lined-up - some names have been mentioned, above - I would like Kovacic (who, according to ITK, we have been seriously sniffing around). But you never know, Carroll might be ready and good enough to step into the breach <INSERT PRAYING EMOTICON>, and then we could get £40+ million for him (£50+ million if we allow Citeh tosign him), and pay out fack all to replace him.

This is stupid mate. If he ever comes back to the lane I imagine he will get booed for acting like a petulant ****, which he deserves, but there is no way he will agree to being put in stocks and let us pelt him with s***. Also more seriously, collective fan messages are pathetic and smack of arrogance, like Liverpool fans writing one to Torres.

It was never about Modric going last summer it was about not being hijacked by chelsea, standing firm and controlling the situation. I expect we will sell him this summer as I have ever since last year, to be honest I thought he may have gone last summer until chelsea came in with a bag of beans and made it absolutely certain he wouldn't. I would hope that we have used the ensuing season to plan for the changes.

I really don't want to revisit old arguments well trodden, but Modric and Huddelstone was a terrible pairing that did not work at all. It was played about 6 times, most of them at WHL, and in nearly every one of them the opposition dominated us.

Levy will do more infuriating things in this window than all the others put together.

New manager, new players, outgoings...

Prepare for last minute panic stations!

But who is to say those clubs will even come back in for him in the summer though?

Chelsea will be in transition and whoever does come in may have completely different ideologies in what personnel to bring in and for all the posturing of Man Utd, ultimately they never bid once for Modric so it remains debatable whether the situation will change this year.

I could see us getting 50 million from City for him, that would do nicely.

It might also give us more bargaining power regarding Adebayor...in other words we'll pay them less for him, and that saving can be built into a lump sum he gets - to offset a drop in wages.

City would take him all day long, not just because of his ability but it stops Chelsea or United becoming stronger and a player of Modric's ability is exactly what they need to freshen up their respective midfields.....Scholes, Lampard etc can't go forever.
I couldn't. The owners seem to have made it clear that they won't be spending on transfers to anything like the extent they have in the past 2 seasons. With Tevez and Balotelli likely to leave, and Dzeko very inconsistent, I imagine they'll be concentrating on a couple of strikers.

Whilst Adebayor has given us some qualities we were lacking, for 100k(and it's doubtful he'd accept even that) a week, a striker has to be much more clinical than he is.
