Would we benefit from selling Modric this summer?

He is exhausted and is suffering from MR R's lack of rotation. Same as Parker.

Do you know ironically that regarding my Moneyball reference that Billy Beane (Brad Pitt main character) is a huge spurs fan?

'Tottenham make moneyball signing, Billy Beane to sign 5 year contract'.

I remember that day like it was yesterday! For peanuts as well! :(

For me that was almost more criminal than Berbatov to united and he wanted to go badly.
Sheringham was my favourite player post Lineker/Gazza and him going to United was bitter, but i was happy that he at least went with a sad heart got his trophies and came back. I am sure there are those with better info about what happened there than I have, but I remember Teddy very fondly.

Hardly been crap now have they?!
Parker was arguably our best player in the first half of the season and by a country mile too.

Ambition is not just about super star signings, but also showing the players how you plan to strengthen the weakness areas you have and turn it into results.

3rd and having been in a title challenge early doors shows ambition to me, steady progressive ambition.

Hopefully more to come.

well i dont rate Friedel to be honest, but Parker has certainly turned out to be a good buy, but that's not the point, those 2 signings aren't the players that would have made Luka thought we are going to push for the title

Again, not so sure.

Before the England debacle we were right up there. Modric might have raised an eyebrow when those two arrived, but he will have known the wealth of experience they brought to the squad and stability, shown in the results post United.

No, with HR probably staying and no more distractions, Modric will know that should (big IF) one or tow names come in like Hazard for example, that we could really challenge.

For me though it's probably more a question of money, if United, City or Chelsea offer him massive pay rise, he may still want to go, no matter who we sign.

Who realistically have we got capable of rotating with Modric? With Parker, you can rotate with maybe Sandro and Livermore (but it's clear who's the better player for me in the side)...but who with Modric? Niko's injured all the time and not great in the middle....who?

He didn't look too tired yesterday anyways, he fucking ran the show, excellent performance.

I agree it was an excellent performance.

You know who I would love to get in, whether Modric goes or not....Dembele, I think him and Sandro would make a class midfield pairing...

Having say like Dembele, Sandro, Parker and Modric for next season would be quality, be it playing 3 or a 2 in the middle.

I think we need to do all we can to keep hold of Modric. His pass for Lennon to set up Ade last night was the perfect example of what he can do with the ball at his feet. Very few players have that sort of vision and creativity. I would like to see it a bit more but I do think he benefits when we have 2 wingers to open the field up for him.

If we do lose him in the summer however I wouldn't actually replace him like for like. I would look at Sandro to replace him in a positional sense. Although a totally different player I think he could develop into a top quality box to box midfielder in more of a Toure/Viera mould than a Modric/Xavi etc.

It may sound funny because on one hand I really appreciate what we have with Modric, but on the other hand I think losing Modric could allow us to change things around a little. Maybe press a bit higher up the pitch with Parker and Sandro as enforcers. Thus leaving the more creative football to the advanced midfielders (i'm not a fan on VDV on the right and Modric pushed on, much prefer 2 wingers).

I would then look to spend the money on a top striker like Remy and then some cover for VDV. I think VDV would then become the guy who makes us tick, along with said cover. I'd love someone like Hazard too but if not then another quick pacey and tricky winger.

Much like how we changed our play a bit when Berbatov left I think we'll still play great attacking football and still be successful with it. We'll just change our style a little in centre midfield and rely more from the creativity of the 3 attacking midfielders behind the striker.

While this is true, Pienaar's not a central midfielder. The reason I and many other people have suggested getting Allen in is that he has a very simialr style of play to Modric, and plays in exactly the same position. Thus, if we wanted to try and get a like for like replacement for Modric in order to keep the same system, he would fit the bill.

I don't think anybody has said he's as good as Modric, although he certainly seems to have the potential to be a very good player. He's also "homegrown" I think (Welsh but trained by Swansea who are part of the English FA), which is an important consideration now.

I agree that if we changed system a direct replacement for Modric may not be necessary.

Pienaar could play in a 3 no problem same as Allen does and do it better. Mod has played most of the time for Spurs in a 2 in midfield. I like Allen he's a tidy footballer but it'd be a big backward step in my opinion.

I'd like us to commit to a system really and buy players to fit it...

Sig didn't replace Modric though, Dembele did. As good a replacement as possible really.

Muppet.

I think you will find that the way this thread was going was that Sig was a MORE than adequate replacement for Luka - and we all now have the answer to this.

You would be correct in me saying that he was a 60 minute player, and nowhere near as important as Modric or Bale. And yes, i did say that when he isn't scoring, he's an average player.

Can you tell me what he's done since leaving, in a poorer league, which would make him 'above average'?
