There was a player around 10-15 years ago known for the same skill but I don't remember his name. Does anybody remember him? I think he played for Southampton but that might be wrong.

Dave Challenor at Tranmere...?

I remember him in the League Cup with his beasty throws, that was only 6 or 7 years ago though.

Yeah that's the geezer. Mind you, he could never throw with the variation of Rory. The flat one for the first goal yesterday was brilliant. Maybes we could just loan him for the next time we play le arse'?

I feel rather silly now as the player in question was none other than Rory Delap. He used to play for Southampton between 2001 & 2006.

It was at Carlisle between 1994 & 1998 that he became known in the lower leagues for his long throw ins before being snapped up by Derby.

I don't remember him being famed for his throwing whilst at Derby/Saints at all. Does anyone?

I just remember a trip to St Mary's in a few years back, on the train I read an article saying how Delap hadn't scored for xxx amount of games - we lost 1-0 to a stunning Delap overhead kick.

He's had more success with it at Stoke as they have more height in their team than his previous clubs but I do remember Southampton scoring a few from his throw ins.

Accepted that if we bought Delap we would have to buy a Crouch or Hesky in Jan with him, but on present form i think it would be a given that if we did then his throwins would be a certain 20-30 goals a season... he has got an ability that is, at the moment, unique and undefendable. I'd definately take him!

Deary deary me, it's a usefull tool for stoke, at present. But it won't be "undefendable" for very long. Teams will set their stall out, i know it's difficult to decide where you will concede throw ins but i'm sure teams will look very hard at where they do give them away. It's not a reason to sign someone and if we stoop that low then i feel it's time to give up.

Typical Tottenham that we lose to them without conceding from the 'throw'.

Then concede 2 set pieces against Arsenal who are famous for not being very dangerous from them.

No, no need

Far more physically impressive is the distance gomes gets. If delap can throw a square ball into the box, then I'm betting gomes could do the same from the half way line.

In those cup-tie situations where we're chasing the game, I'd give him the throw ins.

If anything I would have him as a squad player at the most. If we were losing it wouldnt be a bad option to have in the last 20 mins when we would want to bombard the opposition goal.

Premiership PopQuiz.

Can you score directly from a throw-in? With no other player touching the ball?

Along the same lines, can a player score direct from a goal kick without the ball touching any other player? and should a player/goal keeper take a goal kick against the wind and the wind be so strong it blows the ball back into his own goal, what is the outcome of that?

Wasn't Pat Jennings goal for Tottenham in the 1967 charity shield scored direct from a goal kick? Also Robbo's goal against Watford was from a goal kick I believe.

I would think if the wind blew the ball in the goal would stand. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.

@PT
I think the answer is no as well.
@Damien
Isn't that what happened with Robbo's goal at Watford last year? Both of those would count.

Robbo's was a free-kick on the edge of our area.

Jennings' was a boot straight out of his hands, not sure if that is still allowed but think it is.

Robbo's goal against Watford was from a free kick?? And i do not mean a kick from a keepers hands by the way i mean a "goal kick". Now it's my belief a goal kick must go beyond the 18 yard box before any player can touch it, or possibly certainly one of your own team mates. Lets says it's that windy the ball doesn't leave the 18 yard box before it blows back into the net(all hyperthetical and probably impossible) then what?

I am not totally sure any player can score direct from a "Goal kick" itself, unless another player touches it first.

Wonder if anyone can confirm the actual rules on those.
