A bit closer to this being a meaningful exercise now, so here is my latest thinking, based on the players currently available

I think we should look to having at least 5/6 people who can play in AM/no10. Keeping consistency when players are out will ensure that the system doesn't rely too much on a non fluid plan b.

Broadly agree.

But as CB, I'd like to see how Kaboul performs over the next few freindly games to see if he can get back to the level he was 2 seasons ago. If he can't we might end up needing 2 CB's.

In the middle of the field, I'd still be worried about not having a top class player to pass the ball forward - Mason (good passer and also surprisingly good at breakinmg up opposition play) and Carroll could be good for that but think they would be used as a back up for someone coming in, so we wouldn't sell them. But we would need to move on one of the 4 main CM's we have - Sandro, Capoue, Dembele or Paulhino - all of whom will be on high wages.

I'd be surprised if we had the budget and time to go much further to look at your 3rd and 4th - unless Adebayor's malaria looks to be a big issue. With our current complement of AM's we probably have enough creativity and goals to get by unless Ade's art risk of being out for long periods.

Loan Veljkovic somewhere where he's going to play every week.
Sell whichever of Dembélé or Paulinho attracts better offers this sumer but look to replace the one we keep in the squad next summer with whichever loanee midfielder does best.
Start the season with 5 centre backs (the new one should be a starting player to partner Jan - Moreno would've been ideal) so that Kaboul can prove (or otherwise ) his fitness by January.

That'd be my squad. 24 players, 9 of whom count on the homegrown quota. Those in brackets I believe would meet the U21 exemption rule. Good depth and balance. 1 space left for an extra defender maybe, possibly a naturally left sided CB.

Dawson, Ekotto, Sandro and either Dembele or Paulinho sold.
That is assuming Carroll is off to Derby on loan too. Ceballos, undecided, either let him take the last spot, or a English league loan.

I'd be quite satisfied if that's how we lined up for the season ahead.

That is a well balanced squad, only BAE to go and Sandro/Daws dependant on incomings. Only other over 21's are Khumalo and Obika. Would be good to get rid but not key as won't be on big money.

Agree with everything except selling Dembele. I think we should sell Sandro and we should wait until January to see if any additional sales should be completed.

Yeah, it's hard. Dembele's also different to anything we have with his ability to dribble forward from midfield. None of the others do it consistently enough to consider it part of their usual style of play.

I just think that the lack of form for what feels like over a year compounded with the hip injury makes me think he should be sold now if we can get a decent enough offer.
