The title sort of describes it, name your 23 man, first-team squad and first choice starting XI, from the players we have had, or have, since Santini took over until now. 23 men made up of 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders and 4 strikers.

Goalkeepers
Gomes, Robinson, Cesar

Defenders
RB:Hutton, Chimbonda
CB: King, Woodgate, Dawson, Kaboul
LB: Bale, Lee

Midfielders
RM: Lennon, Bentley
CM: Modric, Jenas, Carrick, Huddlestone
LM: Dos Santos, Davids (first season)

Strikers
Berbatov, Keane, Kanoute, Defoe

Starting XI would be

Gomes
Hutton King Woodgate Bale
Lennon Modric Carrick Davids
Berbatov Keane

it was impossible to pick a starting XI that I liked, and toyed around with it loads, this team wouldn't work without Davids in there, he wuld cover Bale, and provide steel for Modric and Carrick as well. Couldn't choose between Keane and Kanoute individually, but Berba-Keane partnership was magic, and I think Hutton edges RB position due to his attitude and he's got a better cross than Chimbo.

Love that team. having Davids on the left would give Modric the opportunity to go forward and give Bale the left side too.

I think Steed is worth a shout, as is Tainio (for the squad) - basically need some Premiership experience in there.

Anyway, off the top of my head:

----------------Gomes-----------

Hutton------Woody-----King---Bale

Malbranque---Carrick---Tainio--Davids

--------------Keane---Berbatov------

Subs: Sanchez, Corluka, Modric, Dos Santos, Zokora, Kanoute, Bentley

Okay, so the team is a little light on creativity, but it's also rock-fuckin-solid. The midfield would work so hard, it'd be hard to break down our defence.

Also, we'd have plenty of creativity on the bench if we needed it.

If only this was our squad now (with a slightly younger Davids)

Gomes (Robbo 2005)

Hutton (Chimbo) Woody (Corluka) King (Dawson 2006) Lee (Bale)

Lennon (Bentley) Jenas (Modric) Carrick (Zokora) Davids (Steed)

Keane (Defoe) Berbatov (Kanoute)

My team and the bracketed 2nd team.

This is really tough, but I think my squad would be.....

Gomes

Hutton…..Woodgate........…..King…..Bale

Davids.....Carrick

Lennon……………..........…….Malbranque

Berbatov…Keane

Subs
Robinson
Edman
Dawson
Pamarot
Redknapp
Huddlestone
Jenas
Zokora
Bentley
O’Hara
Kanoute
Defoe

I think the main thing that i have realised (and probably already knew) is that we have not had a proper left sided winger ever, not once, we have not had a midfield general at all (other than 1 season of davids past his best) and we have not had enough backup to our defensive positions. That is a constant which needs to be fixed.....Mr Comolli, over to you......

Its actually quite depressing to see those 11's, knowing most of the key players have already left us.

The first team selected in this thread is the best... but only assuming Modric gets to where he was when we decided to sign him otherwise it's Jenas.

Davids and Bale on the Left OMG thats would be sweet. We were solid with Lee and Davids but going forward Mr Lee's final ball too often let us down and i for one would be happy to lose a lttle bit in experience and defensive nouse and go for Bales extra bit of class on the ball. Besides Woodgate would be next to Ledley and Hutton is at RB so the back 4 would be good enough to support Bale.

Carrick and Modric in the middle... Jeeez the ball retention would be up there with the best. Lennon as the outlet and Berbatov and Keane up front (drool). I would go as far as to say that side would be league title contenders.

Why Mido no play?

But seriously, folks, I'd go with that first team as well, closely followed by H-T's.

Davids is now like 36 and wanted to return home, Berbatov and Carrick wanted to leave... the rest (minus Keane, who didn't have to be sold) are still with us...
