Still the race for 4th. We've done the almost champions league for a while and the champions league once, and I prefer the champions league.

if you build a team capable of competing in the CL yearly, the trophies will follow.

Seriously, what are you people on???

When I say we have to get in the Champions league I mean that has to be the aim. We have to be in next season or some of our best players will more than likely be leaving.
Winning the Europa league is achievable. We are the current favourites to win the Europa league so lets go out and win it...

Atletico beat Madrid and Barca to the Spanish title last year. I bet they are glad they dont have small time supporters like we have, declaring them as no hopers before a ball was kicked.

Always take aim for the top. You never achieve anything aiming for a comfortable easy target.

Aim for 6th? fucking hell.

Precisely... we might realistically end up 6th, but we should never aim to be satisfied with that. Yes the chairman might not put that pressure on the manager this season, but the manager should always be pushing for the ultimate, to win every game and should be challenging the team to win the league, nothing short of that is an acceptable personal expectation.

Every player should be challenging themselves to do the utmost to achieve this and you see where the chips fall.

I understand why a number of people are being realistic in this thread, but I hate this no winning attitude, it what is fundementally wrong with the club and has been since the likes of Bill Nick, Burtinshaw and possibly Venables were managers. If you start off with lowering your expectations and ambitions then you are always going to be satisfied with second best. I have supported this club for over 50 years and have put a bet on us to win the league every season since I have been old enough to bet, you will note that in that 50 years we have never won the bloody thing, third a few times and very close on a couple of occasions, but until the club changes the its mind set we won't come close. The manager, players and fans should be expecting to win things until it is mathmatically impossible to do so.

I hate the attitude of it being OK to be also rans. Anything can happen in a season, look at recent seasons Man City winning the league at the death a couple of seasons ago, Chelsea winning the CL despite being complete shite for most of it and Liverpool winning the CL after being 3-0 down at half time, its all about mental toughness and a we can do attitude, which I am afraid this club from top to bottom has lost, Bill Nick will be turning in his grave.

Yes I want to see us play attractive football, but I am always happier when we win how ever it happens. Luck will always play a part in a long season and any cup competition it could be the way the fixture list pans out, a referee decision at a key point in a game or an easy draw in the cups, but you still have make your own luck by challenging decisions, making chances, playing as a unit and expecting to win.

I could have used a lot of cliches like Bill's "glory" speech and I apologise for going off on a bit of a rant, but I spend thousands every season to watch my team win not to be happy with finishing 6th. So I am saying I want us to aim for the double, neigh the quadrouple, because as my dear old Mum used to say "If you don't want to shit get off the pan"

I don't disagree with any of this, I'm just going with the whole thing of not being disappointed by our end achievement and refuse to get excited about 'winning' when all that usually happens in the 'banter' from other teams fans.

I'm happy quietly going about our business, but I won't be talking up our chances of a top four, title push, cup run etc etc.

Now as a team, I'd fully expect us to be targetting to win the league - that goes for every team in the league to be honest, and to continue that target until it's actually not possible, but my personal expectations are lower than in recent years.. which is more for my own sanity than anything else!

It has to be and can only be the race for the title plus win all three cups.

In the immortal words of Bill Nicholson, 'It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory.'

If we fail to get the title then 4th will be the echo of glory!

6th, some exciting football and a trophy would be a successful season for me.

However, I want us to go all out for the EL as I:

1) think we have a decent chance of winning it
2) believe that it's the only way we'll get CL football.

If we win the EL, and play some good football, I'll be delighted tbh.

Exactly that.

This is my problem though, understand the realism on here, but aim for 4th and probably end up 6th or 7th aim for the top and we might just get 4th. I won't be judging Poch if we don't achieve/win anything, but for christ sake lets go for it from the off.

I don't think anyone is going to say we shouldn't be TRYING to win every game.

I don't think anyone gears up their team telling them, "well this year chaps 10th is a good result so if we win the first few let's slack off a bit."

I was merely saying that if there's a benchmark we should be looking at (i.e. a 'race for [x]') then I think our 'X' can be 4th, but we shouldn't be throwing out the Poch with the bathwater if we don't achieve that.

We have seven foreign internationals who have now had a season to settle down and understand how our opponents play in this league.

Add to that, we also have a managerial improvement from last season.

Pool have lost their best player.

Majority of United's first choice defence will be new and may take time to be a cohesive unit.

Depending on who else we buy before this window closes, we have a great chance of getting a top four place
and at least reach the semis of the EL.

Surely its a race for the title until it's impossible for us to win it? Should be the aim of all the clubs in the top half.

Finish anywhere between 4th-7th....hoping for fourth obviously but not expecting.

Just because you don't expect it doesn't mean you don't aim for it though.
I rated this winner but I would be disappointed if we finish 7th. If the performances are good and we were close I wouldnt mind but at the moment that Everton squad doesnt have the depth and not to mention will struggle without a goalscorer and struggle to juggle Europa and Premier league footy
