Been a bit too narrow.

They definitely adapted as I think we took them by surprise.

First 20 and we were constantly winning the ball high up the field as they tried to play through the thirds.

I think theyve been instructed to bypass more and press the second balls, which is causing us some issues.

I think when we get the ball into Kane or Son they only have 1 or 2 runner off them and its congested.

The third midfielder needs to be able to get right up there because otherwise we are just a man less than them.

I prefer 3 in midfield but ideally we would have a creative playmaker in the three who can carry the ball forward and dictate. I feel PEH, Biss and Ben isn’t a great balance. But I fully appreciate that we aren’t built for it
Agreed. We need the clichéd ‘lock picking’ midfielder. Although I feel there’s a confidence in the formation change thus far. We are a few players short of contes desired way…

We are good but Brighton a really good team as well. So technically gifted. Hope we nick it.

For the first half hour or so we were so much more watchable, looked calmer, we pressed better and looked more in control of the game than we have in ages. Died off a bit last fifteen, HT came at a good time.

We've looked good when Davies or Romero have got involved with the midfield. Our midfield three are still getting boxed in a little and they need someone extra making a move for them to play the ball to. Davies did this a couple of times after we had sucked their midfield across to the right side of the pitch.

I think Sess and Doherty are both learning the timing of their runs a little bit. They can afford to be a little more aggressive but as of yet they haven't looked it. Sess has been the better of the pair, although I still don't think he's been more than solid this half. Bissouma has looked a little shakey too, but hopefully that will improve.

It was a good half between two good sides playing well. It took Brighton about 20 minutes to get to grips with our extra midfielder, but once they worked out how to bypass our press, they gradually took over possession and made more chances. Conte needs to tweak a few things to get some control back, because we stopped making chances in the last 15 minutes.
I’m sure you’re a mind-reader David ?

Great "hockey assist" by PEH for our goal, by the way. Just watched it again.

Hmmm, 3-5-2 seems better between the boxes but less stable in each box.

Just an observation - but for playing 3 CMs, we are getting cut open in the middle a lot.
Happened more after Bissouma's yellow. Thought we were doing ok in that area up until that point. We also sat back too much after the goal. It'll take time for the players to get used to this system, but it's actually working ok imo. Think we may see Biss subbed at some point.

Good start and in the lead, but Brighton very much back in it.
We seem to have lost all interest in quick attacks on the break this season for some reason. This formation does highlight the inadequacies of our full backs, with the final ball so poor. Dier should be banned from all his long ball passing attempts, he is no toby and is just kicking it back to the opposition.
Silly booking from Bissouma, might be the issues AC has been hinting at regarding discipline.
Peresic after 70 mins will improve us going forward, doubt Spence will get a chance the other side though.
Skipp possibly for Bissouma and Richy for son at some stage the likely changes.
We need to win games like this to be competitive this yr.

I think Kulusevski could do a job there as well.

Yes. I’ve been closely watching the midfield 3 to see if Kula could be one of those guys. Bissouma is the deepest but both Bentancur and PEH still do a lot of work defensively.

Brighton are a good side. We press higher and have more of the ball up field we are liable to leave some more openings than when more passive, just the way it is. Having said that we need to adjust to their adjustments now as the last 10-15 they got the better of us
