There was an issue with Son playing Left Midfield because he never bothered to work hard enough defensively and protect his full backs for a long time. Post Lloris bust up and after Lockdown he started tracking back properly and protecting Davies and was much improved in that position.
I think the issue is more about wasting his attacking abilities, not that he wouldn't be capable of playing LM. He gets more goals and more assists than Wilson, so it could be difficult to justify.

Even if Wilson could play as part of a front 3, rather than a front 2, Bergwijn, Alli and Lamela already face a big fight to get into the starting XI. Wilson only starts a match if he's better than those 3 plus someone in the starting XI (Kane, Son, Moura, Lo Celso).

Lmfao Mitrovic is in no way making the likes of Harry Kane or Son worry about their spot in the team. Those two are genuine world class players. Mitrovic is not.

AFCB fan in peace.

I'd thought I'd correct a few misconceptions here.

Yes, our wage bill was £110m in the last accounts. There or thereabouts anyway. Lots owed on transfers as well.

However, since then we've been relegated and every player in the squad had a relegation reduction clause apart from Nathan Ake. And he has been sold. We don't know the level of the % as it seems it isn't a blanket number although The Guardian reported that Wilson's was set at 50%. So we won't be paying him £100k/week in the Championship, more like £50k. Still a chunky sum but depending what choices the manager makes it could maybe be justified for a season.

Meanwhile, from that wage bill as well as taking of those relegation reductions you can remove the wages of:

Ake, Fraser, Boruc, Defoe, Ibe, Brad Smith, Francis, Surman and Daniels. Daniels may yet be offered a new contract if he proves his fitness but is currently without a deal. All the others are definitely gone and that's a pretty significant saving.

Then factor in other savings that are pretty certain to come:
Begovic has 12 months left on his deal and will go on loan somewhere. It looks like AC Milan want him as their number 2 again so I guess he will end up there with them covering the salary.

Harry Arter is still in contract but the reason he left was to do with personal issues rather than ability so there isn't much chance he will come back since those same personal issues are still likely in play. There's a good chance his brother-in-law Scott Parker will take him to Fulham but something will happen with him moving on.

Josh King only has 12 months left on his contract and so will definitely be sold. We won't again risk letting another player act like a poisoned toe rag through the whole last year of their contract like Fraser. There seems to be a mass of clubs chasing him but I guess it'll only crystalise into one or two offers. He'll go though and again that's another higher earner off the bill.

The Ramsdale deal to Sheff Utd looks set. I'll be honest in I hoped that wouldn't happen but if it does a deal worth £21m (minus the Sheff Utd sell on making it worth £18.5m to us) is decent cash in the bank and another PL earner off the wage bill.

Then we come back the man you may be chasing, Callum.

He's said he wants to go as he has the idea he may get into the Euros squad next summer. I don't see it myself but you can't blame a guy for wanting to back himself. Not sure how that would tally with playing for you though where he would obviously have limited game time.

Anyway, with him on a long contract at a more affordable wage after the reduction and with £60m all but banked already and more likely to come we're in a position to hold for a price that we deem acceptable.

I doubt it will end up be £30m but £25m I can see. There are enough clubs in need of a proven striker that when it gets close to the window shutting, even if you've walked away, someone that has started the season badly will panic and bid for him. Or, if they don't, we keep him until January and then demand the full £30m then as we all know clubs are even more desperate then.

So yeah, on the surface we look to be in need of cash but actually a lot of steps have already been taken and others seem inevitable. Don't expect to get him on the cheap.

As for all the bitching from the AFCB fans about him last season, ignore them. He's still genuine PL quality. There was a whole host of bad things that hit at the same time to conspire to make our last season terrible and fans are fickle so lash out at everyone when that happens. The only one truly deserving of the bile is Fraser.

Since the ACL's, Wilson has been mostly fit so shouldn't really be an injury concern.

We'll see what happens but even if he wants to go to Spurs, I don't see us selling him unless you pay close to the full asking price.
Forget Wilson at that price especially with Bournemouth seemingly wanting rid of king who would be much cheaper, can play outwide and because he was in uniteds academy is HG

We all know Watkins is/will be better than Wilson and we also all know that he won't come here at his age to be backup for Kane.

Not that we have any indication that we’re looking at Watkins, but where on earth are you getting the idea that he wouldn’t come here if we would pay the fee needed to get him? By that measure no club with an established striker would be able to get anyone worthwhile in. Oh, and who said anyone coming in would be strictly a backup?

With all the games we have with cups and Europa there’s plenty of starts to go around, not to talk about playing with Kane in different formations or if we’re chasing a game. Not to mention, who better to learn from than one of the best strikers in the world?

Punting 25m on a guy who scored 3 goals in 24 matches with two major knee injuries would be a legitimately awful deal. And I usually don’t care about fees. For that money try to get Watkins, try to get Josh King, even Welbeck.
This. Watkins offers so much more including ability and potential. I'd expect his wages would be much less too.

This is just another Højbjerg.
Herc has made it clear that we won't be paying what that Bournemouth fan or Daily Mail thinks and the Goat has said he wants to come.
However, if we think it's not worth the risk we won't do it and we go with one of the other 4 options indicated.

I think this is your problem. I know Levy would never pay what's being asked for him but there are enough clubs out there looking for a striker this summer that someone will likely bite in the end.

There was a story at the weekend that Newcastle were preparing a Gayle+Ritchie+cash bid for him. That would suit us down to the ground. Newcastle get a striker that scores goals in the Premier League which they desperately need. They also get Gayle off their hands. We get a proven Championship striker in Gayle to replace Wilson and King and also bring back Ritchie with whom we have a good history. Probably another hot air story but you can see that a club will probably try and be people creative to make the deal happen if they don't have the hard cash.

If not Newcastle then West Ham. Or Palace. Or Fulham. Or Villa. Somewhere like that is where I expect him to end up.

Given the choice obviously he'd choose you but I don't think he'll get that choice.

Maybe this is a bit tenuous,

but as we know Newcastle seem to be in the hunt for Wilson too. I seen earlier the Toon and Bournemouth might consider a deal involving Matt Ritchie going back to Bournemouth, obviously played an integral part in the last season in the championship.

Jeff Hendrick is having a medical at Newcastle now. Maybe a replacement squad player as Ritchie looks to move on and aid the Wilson deal?

Probably just a mid table club signing an average player on a free to fill out the squad, but did make me think

My preference is Schick. On the plus side he would fit in nicely when Kane needs a rest. On the downside he’s too similar to Kane to play them both together hence why we’re linked with several strong and reasonably quick forwards.

That £20m plus offer from Everton for Hojbjerg probably suited them a whole lot better too. All comes down to how much Wilson wants us.

I think his desire to get back in the PL will be greater than any specific club so it might still work out in your favour. He may well accept a move to the highest bidder but as we all know that doesn't always happen in football.

I'll be honest, I don't really care as to whether we get Wilson or not, the only thing I care about is that we have a range of candidates who Jose thinks he can work with and that we can just secure one of them, whoever it is.

Okay, maybe not Welbeck (though he did look OK in the two Watford matches I saw after the re-start). :ROFLMAO:

I’m just saying if it’s come to the point where we need to drop 20m plus on Callum Wilson there have to be alternatives. King and Watkins have always been my options.
Welbeck is an awful striker. He can run, has some ability, but not only is he injury-prone but he cannot score goals on a consistent basis. A glorified frazer Campbell.
