Woke up. Checked BBC for result. Thought "Oh SC must be fairly happy with a 2-2"

Checked Match Thread.

Lol
Mate I didn't enter until a fair way into the game and abandoned it after 5 minutes. The sheer number of people that don't understand what the point of pre season friendlies are is staggering.

Not very encouraging tbh . The commentators kept saying this was roughly the team they expected to start vs City !! Surely not .

Tanganga and Dier ? . Looked a bit wobbly to me until Chelski put their 2nd 11 in . First half we had the kind of mental collapse that I dread , the ball-as-hot-potato moment we get sometimes . Each player seemed nervous when they received the ball and tried speculative punts to relieve their fear....back to the oppo generally .
Chelski were pressing well , this is what freaks out our players . Thought Nuno was honest when asked about good things from the team & quickly said that he was more concerned about the bad . Our old static problem is still there...players not running to find space so the man on the ball has no options . This contrasted strongly with Chelski who had clear running and technical superiority .Men vs boys for 1st half periods.

TN nowhere...looks like his fitness probs are continuing with Nuno as manager...unless there is some particular excuse like his new child...but then TN always needs excuses it seems... worrying .
We need this new CB clearly . Dele seems slow to me not sure about his future with us .Gollini had good start , Skipp not yet infected with the Spurs non-running bug so stood out .
We need a CF imo . Lot of work needed but obv a very good opportunity for Nuno to see what needs improving .

'This is roughly the team expected to start vs City ' ...commentators must be drunk.

Reading match reports it really doesn’t seem there is very many positives to be taken from the game last night. Appears the come back and improved second half performance coincided with Chelsea making whole sale changes. All very concerning and depressing really.

Think Nuno is going to be the next in the list of managers who’ve thought “surely Dele will rediscover his old form if I give him the chance”, only to discover that he is absolutely shot.

So presuming Romero has signed, we need:

Right back
Another Centre back
Central midfield player
Right side forward
Centre forward

As absolute mandatory.

Then arguably we need a creative number 10.

And then if Kane leaves we need at leat one extra striker on top of the other one we need even if he stays.

Good job Fabio never sleeps.

“Absolutely mandatory”

Good interview here. I think these higher intensity friendlies might well do us some good. Will definitely help Nuno identify what is needed that’s for sure.

Glad to see him say about the 90 minutes, I posted last night that was good and it seems he's very pleased with the way preseason is progressing.

If we’re going to play 433 we need a player in central midfield who can control the game.

I think one of Paratici/Nuno's biggest job is to get us to have a functioning midfield. I think last season we all thought/wanted the answer to be Lo Celso - Hojberg - Ndombele, and for whatever reasons that just didn't materialise at all. On paper it's probably still our strongest midfield although Skipp will be pushing to get in there. But from what I've seen we need someone to control the tempo. Not sure who we could get that could do that job.

I think he wants us to have a super fit side like we were under Poch. Obviously that means some players will get left behind though.

Pjanic? Nothing has happened with him yet at Barcelona. Hojbjerg, Pjanic and skipp would be a strong midfield. With the current personnel in our defence I think it needs a proper DM in front of it. Skipp is as close to that that we have so would get in ahead of lo celso and Ndombele who can’t play that role.

If we could get him yes but not sure we could. I think you're right that Skipp is more of a DM than Hojberg, but with Norwich he was always in a double-pivot, quite a big step up already for him so it might take time for him to adjust. Hojberg looks more comfortable in a box-to-box role if playing as part of a 3, but with his experience might be better suited holding for now. Does Lo Celso have the ability to control a game? It's debatable at the moment, Ndombele has the ability but not the physicality or mentality it seems. Our midfield has more questions than answers for me right now.

I think their starting team were told they would play a maximum of sixty minutes and play with intensity, whereas with our team at least half knew they were getting 90 minutes under their belt. It’s a fitness exercise whoever you’re playing against and teams have different fitness schedules. Saying that we were struggling and could easily have been 4-0 down at half time. Work to be done.

By the way (and neg away) Dier and Winks looked a lot better than last season, under Nuno, already.

Yeah I agree and have been saying it for about two years. It is a real problem area for us. Plans for it need ripping up and starting again if you ask me. I don’t see how the players we currently have fit to perform in a functioning midfield. I thought that before last season too and it bore out. It will be the same this year too. People are putting a lot of stock in skipp, and while I like him, I think expecting him to be involved in 30 plus PL games this season is a huge ask for the lad.

Completely agree.
Let’s see if Nuno can get GLC & Ndombele to improve and boss the midfield 3 but I think we really need a controlling creative midfielder type a la Modric, D.Silva mould.

I think we have a long season ahead of us.

Too many average players still in and around the team. Dier, Doherty, Moura, Winks, etc

We badly need to bring in a RW, a RB, another CB and another striker. We also need a CM. To me those are minimum requirements.

Chelsea's team streets ahead of us.

Gollini - impressive. For a change, a goal keeper who actually willing to catch the ball as much as possible than flapping around. Also his fast distributions was good. He is certainly going to push Lloris all the way.

Dele - horrible in first half, meh in 2nd half. Totally devoid of confidence

Bergwijn - Average, but hopefully that goal helps him gain his confidence

Hojbjerg - needs fitness

Skipp - overwhelmed in first half but not due to him. Didnt have any outball. But once Winks came looked good and finished 90min well

Dier , Reguilon- ok. thats it

Tanganga - Not good enough at times. Take that Gala loan and gain experience

Lucas - Giving away that goal shut him up but played well in end

Son - meh. He will be fine when City game comes up

Doherty - avg

I was at the game, yours is a pretty good summing up.

It was really hard sitting there when they brought out the cup and listening to all the champions of europe chanting, especially with no Spurs fans to respond.

The silence when we scored was eerily brilliant.

Gollini was a bit shaky to start with but his confidence grew and did look accomplished. Dele looks like he is wearing American quarterback kit, Chelsea supporters round me didn't realise it was him. I am sorry but he was awful though.
Chelsea must be scared of Davies - as soon as he came on they stopped attacking down that side of the pitch where Reggie had been having a torrid time.
Bergwijn has got golden boots (literally not figuratively)
Skipp was better with Winks next to him as Hojbjerg was struggling with fitness but looks like he will be fine this season

Yes pretty much since Dembele left we haven't been able to dominate midfield, and it's just got worse over time. We can't expect Skipp to suddenly be that guy, he is still learning but should get plenty of game time off the bench. Let's hope Paratici has some ideas in this department.
