i like jay. left of a 433 is a great position for him, has a decent mix of physical and technical ability but crucially can make a difference in the final third, plus he can double up as a centre forward when needed. another overlooked thing on here is that we have the home grown quota to comply with, pretty much everyone wants shot of the likes of naughton, dawson, rose, lennon, sigurdsson etc but we can't just replace them all with foreigners ...

the injury is a big worry though.

Accidental scouting of other options with the same surname must have resulted in some brilliant buys over the years though. Only Toure brothers maybe
Wigan bought James McCarthy from Hamilton in 2009 and James McArthur from Hamilton in 2010. Now I suppose it's possible they meant to do that, but I like to think that somebody misheard the name along the way and they accidentally bought the wrong one the first time around.

If it was the other way round it would be funny as I would believe that Hamilton sent then McArthur in place to try and con them!

In the early 80s, it's often thought that Milan had mistaken Luther Blissett for John Barnes, purchasing the wrong player. They were the only black players at Watford at the time, and Milan's scouts mixed them up

Ever heard the phrase it never rains but it pours?

He then tweets about Shaw & Lallana leaving, followed by...

Over the last 24 hours Jay Rodriguez has gone from 7/4 to odds on with @SkyBet to move to #THFC. Just going to put that out there...

It isn't much apart from a hint, but he's a well-connected Southampton based journo (Press Association).

I'm not going to lie, Jay Rodriguez scares the shit out of me. Maybe the reports recently that Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Remy is true and Rodriguez is our backup plan to Remy.

No way would Levy fork out serious money until Rodriguez has proved his fitness

Players rarely fully recover from serious knee injuries and Rodriguez was very serious

I would rather Rodriguez if Remy is the alternative mind.

In what way?

The knee predominantly. Felt like his best attribute was his pace in behind defenses and that potentially (not a certainty, I know) could affect that. I'm just not sure if he has a good enough all around game to account for a loss of his electric pace.

Into his last year of contract. Could get him for £3 - £4m with current injury. Definitely worth the gamble if medical tests back up the good progress he is reportedly making according to the media.

I agree but I think we had some info that said this deal would be very cheap. He's injured until close to January when he could then negotiate a move due to his contract situation. So saints are effectively paying wages & medical bills at the moment for someone they could then loose for next to nothing as soon as he's fit.
Still a gamble but there could be something in it for levy to work with.

Yeah it's a worry, as is him not having a pre-season with us. But, I do think he's genuinely quality. I know everyone uses the line 'if he wasn't English.. etc etc..' but honestly, people would be going nuts over someone if they had 15 goals in 30 starts from a foreign league. To be honest, him doing it in the PL makes it more impressive, especially as it minimizes the settling in time too. I agree with what you're saying about his pace, but a lot of his goals actually come from good positioning which I don't think a lot of players have (in terms of being in the right place at the right time to pop up with a goal)

“He is obviously a legend in the game and played at the very highest level. I am excited about working with him,"Rodriguez told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"He asked me how the injury was and how I was getting on. It was only a very brief chat but it was nice to be able to meet him."

Speaking about a potential return to Turf Moor, the home of the club from whom he was signed and the team he supported as a boy, Rodriguez admitted that it was the first fixture he looked for following the release of next season's fixtures.

“I want to be able to be fit to play in that and go back to Burnley. That is certainly my aim. Seeing the Burnley fixture in December definitely helps with motivation and I really want to play a part."

“It will be great to go back and see all the fans and be able to play at Turf Moor again and see some of the players and people at the club."

“The Burnley game was the first fixture I looked out for."

You're living in a dream world if you think we could get him for £3-4m. The bloke is English and scored 15 league goals predominantly from the wing. Even with his injury you'd be looking at £10m minimum i'd say.
