You're living in a dream world if you think we could get him for £3-4m. The bloke is English and scored 15 league goals predominantly from the wing. Even with his injury you'd be looking at £10m minimum i'd say.

Yeah, given the contract situation and his age etc, I'd say we're looking at around £10m, but it's defo worth the gamble imo

You think Levy will pay £8m or £9m for a player who can leave Southampton for free in January and has a career threathening injury?

Your currently valuing Rodriquez at £40m based on a 4 year contract if your suggesting £10m with 12 months on his contract.

We should wait till January

Look at Sandro, few if any players in the premiership have his level of physical and mental strength and the last year since he came back from injury he has not been close to being the same player, if Rodriguez recovers and shows sharpness then buy him in Jan but not now

It doesn't work like that though does it..

If you think Southampton are just going to hand him over for £3m you're in for a surprise. They'll want £10m, Levy will probs get him for around £8m knowing him

He can't just leave on a free though can he.. He can talk to clubs about a move next summer, but I'm pretty sure in England you can't even sign pre-contracts

When has waiting for a transfer ever paid off :p He's young, he'll still have resell value, not going to make a huge loss on him, especially given the initial fee wont be extraordinarily high. Might as well take the plunge

I completely agree and if he doesn't sign a new contract then we could potentially get him cheaper then we could now. I understand he is one of Poch's boys but I really don't see him as much of an upgrade on the option we have for the left and I thought that is the whole point. I don't want to see us bring in more players unless they are really going to improve the team.... yes, IF Jay manages to recover fully then he could give us another option but he may not recover fully and I don't think he is much of a improvement on what we already have.

Our four strikers scored a combined 21 goals in the PL this season. Rodriguez scored 15 on his own in the league, mostly from the left wing..

Yeah it's a worry, as is him not having a pre-season with us. But, I do think he's genuinely quality. I know everyone uses the line 'if he wasn't English.. etc etc..' but honestly, people would be going nuts over someone if they had 15 goals in 30 starts from a foreign league. To be honest, him doing it in the PL makes it more impressive, especially as it minimizes the settling in time too. I agree with what you're saying about his pace, but a lot of his goals actually come from good positioning which I don't think a lot of players have (in terms of being in the right place at the right time to pop up with a goal)

I think you're spot on here, but again Snarf has a point since that positioning hardly means a damn thing if he doesn't beat the recovering defenders to the goal.

I gotta agree with him, I'm concerned about us paying that much for a player whose worth is founded on his goal tally, which is founded upon his runs in behind, which he's now recovering from an injury that could forever mar his pace and we face far more teams that park the bus and so don't give us that space in behind anyway.

And how much are you valuing him at if he had 4 years on his contract? Injury free? Lalanna and Shaw both going for close to if not more than £30m.
He's not as good as Lallana though is he and he's a good few years older than Shaw. In that scenario i'd say they'd look for around £15m for him.

People reckoning Levy will pay £9m - £10 for a player who can walk free in 12 months. Seriously no way. He paid £8m for VDV 4 years ago - a player with 50 + caps for Holland and more experience than most of our squad at the time combined in the CL. He even paid £11m for Eriksen last summer - one of Europes most sought after young players.

You have to also keep in mind Southampton paid more than that 10 mil when they bought him two years ago for 12 mil. Given he's English and now a proven Prem-scorer, there's not a chance they'll originally ask for less than 10. Whether Levy pays it or not is another issue altogether, but I don't think it'll be for a single digit fee.

Soton bought him from Burnley for 7m

I wouldn't pay 15m. He's not worth more than 10/12m. We can get Remy (who's about the same level) for less than 10m.

You're right. Could've sworn I read 12 mil somewhere a year and a half ago in an article explaining why he had been a bit of a disappointment at that point.

Yeah, if he were to lose his pace then it would definitely affect his play from LW, but in terms of when he plays up top on his own a lot of his goals come from just being in and around the box and anticipating where the ball will fall, following up rebounds etc. And as you point out, it's not often that our wingers get to run in behind other teams any more unfortunately, so most his play will be in front of the opposition defence. Dempsey for us (despite all his flaws) was good at popping up in the right place and getting a goal, and I think Rodriguez could offer us that with the added benefit of being versatile amongst other things
