Putting everything else aside, I still feel imo that holtby's inability to lock down that 1st team spot is due to the surprising progress (and better perceived potential) of Bentaleb.

Perhaps Sherwood and Poch always wanted Holtby in the no.6 role rather then no.10 which has much more competition. And for some reason bentaleb has proven to the coaches to be ever reliable and ever available for selection.

I love Holtby and never really warmed up to Bentaleb. But I must say young ben has changed my views of late slowly but surely.

Still, losing Holtby will be a big big blow.

No, I have never said that and Lamela is not a deep lying playmaker. Holtby is competing with Eriksen, Lamela and Chadli for a position in the 3 behind the striker.
He doesn't (yet) have the positional discipline to play as a Deep Lying Playmaker.

I said that Holtby plays as a deeper CMF NOT that he is a deeper lying playmaker. Yes, believe it or not, but one can play deep in CMF without being a playmaker. And in his case it not about lack "positional discipline" that makes him unfit to be a (deep) playmaker but simply the fact that he lacks the skills.

I simply think it's a case of Holtby neither being an attacking midfielder or defensive midfielder. It's difficult to actually say what he does and I don't see how he fits into the current setup, particularly if MS comes in.

It seem to me that Poch has defined the players he wants in the squad in a more specific, definite way than the recent Spurs managers...and yet, paradoxically, he give his players more freedom as well when they play.

I think Lewis is as good as he ever will be. Which is just not quite good enough to get a starting berth. Great for the bench, though.

Being good enough for the bench isn't really great, you want your bench made up of players good enough and putting pressure on the players in possession of their place on the team. This brings the best out of the players on the pitch and makes sure they go out for every game with the correct attitude.

If Eriksen was injured I'd love to see Lamela in the hole. In his current form he'd be a good fit and he's played there before.
We've seen it.

Throughout our first few games and pre-season Poch has played 3 number 10s and often when Lamela and Eriksen start together Poch plays Lamela at the more central of the 3.

Unfortunately Holtby is a sort of nothingness player.. Not particularly defensive, creative, pacey or dynamic. This not to say he's poor, but he just doesn't excel at anyone attribute.

He would do well at Everton-bit like Pienaar.
Paper talk is about a return to Germany, though. I think Everton have run out of dough.

I think Holtby could walk in and immediately take over Naismith's role and do a better job of it.

I actually think Lennon would be the guy that could do a great job in Pienaar's role.

Thought Holtby had a really good pre-season as well. Don't understand why we'd sell him as he can cover multiple positions. Looks like we're not gonna be playing with out and out wingers so surely we'd have to sign another AM?

Lewis Holtby moving closer to #Tottenham exit. #HSV interested. Holtby: "We'll have to see what happens in the next few days" #THFC

I may be naive- but genuinely think that Holtby is a very, very good squad player. He also seems to have a fantastic attitude.

I know it's not completely relevant to our football success. But if we were to lose Sandro, Holtby and Dawson in one window..the players that I really seem to relate to as normal blokes who care would be gone. Personally it's a shame. Nut I acknowledge that those traits don't mean footballing success.
