I still think he has a lot to offer the team, just needs to settle in a position and get a few games under his belt.

I really rated Holtby, for me he's no.10 player, it's suits him best, he's a real team player than some of us think of.

He has everything in his locker to be in that position,

His Pros I can think of.

  • Pin pass through ball perfect weight, always an eye to it.
  • Accurate shot, finest shot.
  • Indeed 'TEAM PLAYER' never seen a greedy selfish player in him, always looking for the other player in better position in front of goal and not hesitate to lay easy ball to better chance of goal scoring, that will improve a lot our attacking and our goal different in the table.( Please no more shoot at chances player like Defoe ,Townsend we really need more of Holtby in team.)
  • Play with easy pass to make game flow well, got a Futsal skill ball control that need to have in modern football, always take ball escape from tight space well help us maintain in possession. Give him play in deeper role usually waste his talent a bit in my opinion.
  • Off the ball well, He always run to make space and make him self available. People always misunderstood him doing 40 yds run to receive a pass then tap back and run away, everyone in football know that it for open opposition spaces( worked well when facing Bus team), very surprised that many of us take that to his cons com'on, when we suffered with stand still player we moaning then we have one running we moan again!!
His cons
  • Unnecessary foul and tackle, easy to got cards, should be more calm down that the only thing I don't like of him. But I think Poch can tell him about that.
  • Consistency, a litle flop when got a real chance to prove in big game that one he need to workout.
My personal unpopular opinion is he slightly a bit more better than Eriksen in overall for a no.10 role, the thing that Eriksen got more advantage above him is freekick without it Holtby can do the same and more effective. But both actually a closely ability both are my fav players.

Holtby got unlucky treated by Tim last season for me, His pre-loaned form going well and almost established to the team, unfair. bad managing.

Finally annoying with some agenda in here toward him when he got a chance to play always involved with the goal, how come just one bad game in mid week europa cup make him not suit Poch plan already( half of team played bad). And without him in Pre season I am sure we will not got result in USA and Celtic game, he's really key player but haters gonna hates they ignoring his assist and goal last season too. What a blind.

Will be very frustrate if we let him go, to be fair it just about player is the same position make him no place in starting.
If it me I will not sell him this season we do need player like him. Don't give up early in the true potential player.

Long opinion again sorry my bad eng, but when I starting liked someone in the team they always got sold , Rebrov , Giovani Dos Santos, Falque and for sure You Holtby and Ceballos will be soon T_T

Stobart:

Vlad Chiriches, Sandro, Paulinho and Lewis Holtby are among the players who could be sold before the window closes next Monday.

Agree Holtby should be first Eriksen and Lamela back up. He still will get plenty of games. He played a decent pre season and helps for a good atmosphere.

If Eriksen is injured, we would regret selling Holtby big time. People tend to remember the bad games, and forget about the times Holtby has played behind the striker and pinpointed lobs and through balls to the striker with perfect execution, in games we have struggled to penetrate the defence. I agree with the ones saying he's not a DM or deep-lying playmaker, he hasn't got the positional awareness for that position, especially in Poch's system. He is too attacking minded for that. But as an option as one of three free flowing nr. 10's? We really should give him a proper chance this season. He is tenacious, and can play a pressing game. He can also be a brilliant key for us from off the bench, to unlock defences we struggle to break through.

Don't want him gone at all, especially if we buy a quick striker that can threaten the room behind the opponents defence. I remember how much better Defoe was with Holtby behind him.

I like Holtby a lot but no way is he as good as Eriksen. Holtby is a good option to have on the bench, he can up the tempo of a game whenever he comes on (Like he did at West Ham.) If he accepts the fact that he won't be starting every week then I am more than happy to keep him. If he wants out then reluctantly we should sell for £10-12 million.

He is one of my favourite players for his passion and fan reactions, but once I look past that I have to admit that he isn't as good as our starting midfielders. If he can't play here, then he deserves to start somewhere else, perhaps going back to Germany maybe.

If he's deemed 'expendable' I'd have thought he's perfect loan material. He didn't cost much so the balance sheet doesn't require replenishing, he'll likely improve both in skill & value, I'd suggest it's short sighted to sell him

He doesn't (yet) have the positional discipline to play as a Deep Lying Playmaker.

I said deeper CMF - not playmaker. It is you who is claiming he is competing with Lamela for the deeper laying playmaker position.

They don't play as forwards, they come too deep to get the ball (Lamela does anyway). Also Holtby's best performances pre-season were when he started on the right of the 3 behind the striker and his worst were when he played in the CM 2.

Lamela definetively is positioned and regarded as a forward. Anyway, if you believe Holtby and him are competiting for the same position, feel free to believe so

Unpopular opinion but i'm convinced no current member of the squad has an eye for a through ball like Holtby

I don't doubt his vision, awareness and ability to play to play cute passes....never have.

What I doubt is his ability off the ball....seems to really bugger up our shape, particularly if he's playing deeper. His positional sense is a bit of problem I think.

That said, if Poch can get address that part of his game we have a valuable squad member.

No, I have never said that and Lamela is not a deep lying playmaker. Holtby is competing with Eriksen, Lamela and Chadli for a position in the 3 behind the striker.

I like Holtby from the bench. Does he like that?

Well that's the point being made old boy, if he is happy to try and fight for his place then I would enjoy the prospect of us keeping him. However if he wants to leave and gain a guaranteed starting place elsewhere then we must accept the fact he must go. We could at least command a £10-13 million price for him.

I know Holtby's not a world beater, but he's good squad option to have as back up for people like Eriksen, for injuries and lesser cup games surely. You need squad options like this, no ?

I agree with you on this point. Holtby has thus far shown to be better than Eriksen at throughballs.

Selling him would be madness, we would be up the creek if Eriksen gets injured

If Eriksen was injured I'd love to see Lamela in the hole. In his current form he'd be a good fit and he's played there before.
