Mason: I could have left but I wanted to play for Spurs so badly

My only concern is a lot of the CM's we have, particularly the young ones aren't really the right type for CM2's, especially in tougher games. Mason, Bentaleb, Carroll, Dembele, Paulinho are all really better in a CM3.

Pochettino seems pretty inflexible when it comes to formation. Has he played anything other than 4231 in his entire time in the EPL. Did he in Spain ?
I'm not so sure we were playing a 4231 vs Arsenal. I don't think there was a real strict formation. Chadli played very far forward and referred to his position as a striker in all the post game interviews (his English is very good so this isn't a lost in translation thing). I think it was a case pick an XI, defend deep, choose the right moments to pressure and win the ball back, then break as fast as possible.

Capoue and Mason have to be our 1st choice CM partnership from now on. Benteleb, Stamboue & Dembele will have to prove their worth in the cup matches. Paulinho is a dead man walking, and about time too :poop:. I can see Pritchard being given a chance but probably not this season (i'd like to see it because like with Mason i've always been a fan but I just don't see it happening). Carroll I think is a write-off :(.

Right...you/me round the back of the Tom Carroll thread!

Bring ya tool and bring ya fucking dinna!

Hang on...that sounds like a date. :cautious:

But Mason has been playing in a midfield 2 for the last two seasons. He's retrained and is ready for it.

Arsenal away is a pretty tough game and Mason handled that superbly considering it was is PL debut. Carroll plays pretty deep, so I see no reason why he wouldn't suit a CM 2 rather than 3 (question marks are whether he has the mentality to play at the top level) and Bentaleb plays very well in a CM 2 for a 19 year old. Dembele could play there, if he ever develops urgency with the ball but can't argue about Paulinho.

I think you'd have to define "superbly". I didn't think we coped very well at all and I didn't think Mason did particularly well. He survived is about the best I could say.

Where ? he didn't get a game for Lorient two season ago and last year he was at Swndon and I'm not sure they always played a CM2 - or indeed how he did in it ?

I like what Ive seen from Mason so far. Also as a local lad the inclusion of him in the team gives us a bit more of a sense of identity I feel. Which is an untimely boost as I for one had never been soo disconnected from my team in my whole life as I had been for the last year.
Couple that with recent ITK regarding Pochs line of thinking on picking squads based on who will buy into his philosophy, Im starting to get optimistic again. Oh the life of a Spurs fan!

the problem with this is you want two stoppers in midfield, this hurts us massively in trying to build any cohesion going forward. we could bring modric back and you'd still be trying to claim he can't play as a cm.

I would say Fredericks has the hardest route with Walker, Naughton, Yedlin and even Dier competing with him.

Levy does not like players who stay injured for long periods so let's hope Mason is given a chance. But for that reason I can see Walker being sold. We tried to sell Naughton as well in the summer so maybe Fredericks can still get a chance.
He was an unused sub on Saturday but played the 90 in a 4-0 win in the previous league game for 'Boro.

I liked him as a CM in a 433 very much. But in Redknapp's loose CM2/442 he spent way too much time performing perfunctory shit when he should have been doing more constructive stuff.

You don't need two stoppers in a CM3 and Capoue can play a bit and pass the ball bloody well.

Something like:

Mason Capoue Bentaleb

Would be a very dynamic, progressive CM3 with great balance.

Would you drop Eriksen from the forward line?

A front 3 in a 4-3-3 has to include Chadli + Striker.

Not really, anyone in his situation would be reluctant to leave a top 6 premiership club any other club he could go to will probably be a massive step down.
He declares his love for the club and still people fucking complain.

Capoue
Bentaleb
Mason

Lamela
Chadli
Eriksen

Would be interesting in the 4-3-3 buts its all so moot as Pochettino isn't going to play it.

In Poch's 4-2-3-1 I like to see a quartet of Soldado, Eriksen, Chadli and Lamela - as the number ten.
