If last night was anything to go by, pace in defence is very important. There's so much space in behind us that if it weren't for Davinson's pace and brilliantly-timed tackles once he got back we could have been another 2 or 3 goals down.
I'm fairly certain Ange is aware of what is needed mate - from reports he has already told the club not to buy Kilman because he wouldn't suit. Let's trust that he know what he is doing and if he feels Schuurs has the ability to work in his system then that's good enough for me.

Schuurs is 5 or 6 younger and probably on considerably lower wages than Laporte.

I am not saying you are wrong, but I can see why the club might lean towards Shuurs.
For that reason it's probably more likely we got for Schuurs but could really do with a player for the here and now. We already have plenty of youth at the back and it's good to have the odd prem proven player too.

What I’d be curious about is if we see him as a starter or a back up. Silva or Tapsoba (although both are extremely unluckily I’d think at this point) would clearly both be starters as they wouldn’t come here to sit on the bench let alone the price they’d cost but Schuurs maybe feels more like a rotation option.

Average pace at CB is fine as long as they have good anticipation and can hold the line
Not in this system. One of those CB's needs to be able to recover and mop up quickly. Anticipation is a much needed skillset for sure, but we will get burned against counter attacking sides with pacey forwards purely in the footrace aspect if we don't have pace to counter it. John Terry(I know) was one of the best CB's I've seen for anticipating and reading the game in the back line but you couldn't play 2 of him in Ange's high line.

Romero whilst not being rapid is no slouch and Van de Ven’s supposed to be very pacey. I know we need more than just those 2 to play the Ange’s system - but assuming Dier and Tanganga leave at a minimum, Sanchez looked like he could fill in last night.

Would hope that Laporte playing a similar high line at City would be able to do the same with us and Schuurs too provided our fullbacks can sweep too?

With the way we are going to play pace at the back is vital. Our entire back 4 needs to be mobile and have at least decent speed as a minimum but preferably really good speed. Obviously though they need to read the game, track runners well etc too.

Destiny and VdV are both rapid. Romero has decent speed too and Emerson is ok but a bit slow off the mark.

Porro has decent acceleration, not amazing top speed but his main issue is he has zero defensive awareness or anticipation which means he's losing his man constantly. Similarly Reguilon is struggling with this aspect too despite having really good pace. Davies can't run, Dier enough said. Sanchez has some speed but lacks focus and consistency.

Schuurs needs to be at least as quick as Romero imo otherwise it's too much of a weakness.

If you look at City and Scum, they both play aggressively like we're going to and both have made quick defenders a part of their foundations. City have Walker, Akanji, Ake and now Gvardiol who are all rapid plus Stones has decent speed too. The only slower players they have are Laporte and Dias and neither of them are as slow as Dier or Davies for example. Scum have Timber and Saliba who are both rapid. Gabriel, Tierney, White and Kiwior all have good speed too. Zinchenko doesn't have a great top speed but decent off the mark.

We definitely need to ensure we bring in mobile defenders, preferably with good top speeds and decent acceleration to cope with the high line.

Think we should be aiming higher tbh

But I suppose we already have our first choice CB pairing in Romero and VDV

Anyone is better than Dier/Davies!

Reggie and Porro aren’t short of pace, prerequisite is good defensive skills. Agree Sanchez was outstanding and showed up his other 3 defenders who were outright poor.

Reggie especially is rapid but there's not much he can do to get back if he's in the opponent's half when they win the ball and have a quick counter. There is a reliance on the CBs - like Sanchez did last night - more than the FBs to cover in behind.

Strange how Dier seems nailed on to stay but is the worst of our defenders for the system we will play.
Same as but wonder if that might have anything to do with keeping Kane ? Is one of the senior members and did not seem to pleased when Doherty went.

If Kane did go then would Dier be quickly re-evaluated

No Youtube? WTF is wrong with you all?!

Only 2 headers, none really "defensive". But looks like a great tackler,, pace wit the ball, and really pushes forward.

Don’t disagree but the goals last night were not due to lack of pace, Reggie got skinned a few times and Porro with Dier were positionally all at sea.

I think everyone is doing the right thing: that being, we don't want to comment on players we haven't seen enough of to really form a proper opinion.

I mean, who would (having not seen much of a player) simply watch a youtube highlight reel, become completely invested in signing someone, and then fully melt down when it doesn't happen?

Not on here, friend. No sir....

the stuff I've been reading from Ajax fans about him when they sold him to Torino isn't particularly encouraging..... couldn't wait to ship him out, and that was only last summer :censored:
