Wasn't Bent our top goalscorer that season?? I may be wrong, but I think he's always got a lot of unjustified flak. Like criticism for his link up play. Bent was paid to score goals. He scored goals. What's the problem??

At the detriment of team play. He basically just an athlete with decent finishing. Had zero ability to link play or hold the ball up in attacking positions. Great for lower/mid table counter attacking sides but for teams like us who regularly face bus parkers.

I'd be interested to see his goals highlight reel from back tthen. I would have thought that against bus parkers the rest of the team would be doing the build up play. Against that type of opposition when chances are at a premium, Bent and his finishing ability is exactly what is needed.

Maybe I don't remember that season the best. I just remember battering Roma in a friendly and we were crap in the following season. Judging off friendlies is still tough though.

I remember that, even Dos Santos played well in that friendly

Never watched the player so can’t judge, but seems an odd one. I would have thought we’d be targeting someone who could play alongside Kane as well. Let’s see.

If we’re going two up top at all it’ll be Kane and Son then Kane and Dele before we saw any other combo, that would be case with whoever we signed in my opinion. Bergwijn was signed recently and needs game time too. This guy and any striker we signed is a back up to Kane who plays in cup and EL and Prem if Kane gets injured.

Obviously my guess is only as good as anyone’s but I don’t see why this would be a £40M-£50M transfer. In this market where the fees seem to be a bit lower than recent years, and a 25 year old that as far as I know doesn’t have much of a reputation, I don’t see why it would be so high. And if Benfica are in financial troubles surely they’d be willing to take a lower fee and get what they can. I guess we’ll see but I expect it to be lower

The memory some of you have amazes me. I struggle to remember my breakfast.
My memory's the same, i barely remember my kids ages, but that pre-season was such a hopeful one. We'd won the CC cup the season before. It was Juande Ramos' first full season, we thought we'd be Seville mk 2, we'd just signed bent, Bentley, GDS. It was meant to be our season. 2 points after 8 games later it all came crashing down.

Yeah the opening day defeat against Middlesbrough was such an anti-climatic start. I've never felt so dispondent after the first game of a season.

Middlesbrough were a very poor team and got relegated that year, and after the preseason we'd had we were all expecting big things. Our performance was so bad that day it was scary.

Ultimately, the striker situation screwed us. Which is what worries me about this season.

Big, strong, ok pace and an eye for goal. And he's LEFT footed- that's a big deal imo as all of our attackers prefer coming onto their right (Son, Kane, Lucas, Bergwijn). This guy would give us great balance.
You've basically just described Vincent Janssen.

I have no idea if Vinicius is any good, but it'd be risky to spend big on another one season wonder. For the fee muted this seems an odd one. The fact that Gedson hasn't exactly set the world alight also makes me a little worried about this signing.

Maybe Wolves will put you're mind at rest.

Not singling you out (sorry you were the last one to mention it), but where has this idea that he’s only had one good season come from?

He was top scorer AFTER we had sold Keane, Berbatov and Defoe. At the time of signing him, he was our record signing yet only our 4th most prolific striker. Even in his best season (2008-09), he only scored about 1 in 3, whereas Keane, Berbatov and Defoe had all been 1 in 2 goalscorers.
By signing Bent, Defoe was pushed out of the squad...at a net loss. That never made sense to me.

Has this went back under the radar again?:cautious:

Hi, My name is Carlos Vinicius. I am your under the radar striker. Please don’t be too disappointed that I am not Odsonne Edouard or Patson Daka.

48 hours and an abject 0-1 home loss later.......okay, don’t mind me.
