Mauricio joined us from Southampton in May 2014 and guided us to a fifth place finish in the Premier League and a League Cup Final in his first season in charge.

Famed for his high pressing attacking style of play, the former Argentina defender has built a reputation for developing young players during his previous managerial reigns at Espanyol and Southampton.

He has continued in that vein at the Lane, assembling a squad with the youngest average age in the Premier League and which currently sits second in the league table with just one game remaining having already secured a top-three place.

Daniel Levy, Chairman, said: "We have seen Mauricio bring a tremendous spirit and ethos to our Club and embrace the attacking style of play with which we have always been associated. He has built a squad of youth and experience and this season we have seen football played at the highest level - quite sublime at times. Everyone at the Club is delighted he has agreed an extended contract and we all look forward to working with him in the coming seasons. I know he is as ambitious for our Club as we all are."

Club at cross roads, makes a seemingly risky decision to go with an allegedly untried Poch. Club at the juncture building its new stadium when money is going to be tight and player purchases can be impacted. Club signs manager who doesn't automatically go for the big name signing but instead wants players who 'fit' into his squad and philosophy and is happy to look to youth. Club and manager have a brilliant season as the philosophy starts to bear fruit. Club gets over enormous hurdles to obtain approval for new stadium. Club sees emergence of brilliant younger players to form core of future side like Kane, Dier, Rose, Alli, Lamela, Eriksen etc. Club and manager wed for a further 5 years. Club finishes in CL places.

But it's essential that Poch and his first-team staff continue to have a strong working relationship with Mackenzie and Mitchell, as well as John McDermott, the Academy's Head of Coaching, who I believe is another key member of the club's brains trust.

They don't always, though. And when he was appointed, people were querying why he was 'head coach' and not manager - and it was probably because Baldini was still there.
