Lennon and Palacios showed tonight that form is temporary, class is permanent. They are both very good players and hopefully they are returning to their best.

We especially need Palacios back, since Hudd is out and JJ injured tonight.

I know we didn't get out of second gear tonight but I think Jenas' injury is a big blow to our midfield.

Modric easily MOTM.
Crouch put in his best all round performance for Spurs and was truly immense. Lennon too had his best game in a while. palacios is getting there and I hope to see him start at the weekend.

Modric. Standard.

Gotta trust ole Harry.

Again. I said Modders would get a goal or an assist today in the combined goals/assists thread.

I said

Modric

Will get

A goal

Or an

Assist

In todays

Game

Before

It

Happened

And I said he plays great at home. So.

I called the Arsenal game

I called this one.

Gomes didn't actually have to do anything did he?

Hutton had some good moments, including a fair few good passes for Lennon, but a few sloppy moments too. Mixed bag but edging on the positive side of life.

Gallas was immense. At one point I thought Marin was going to make a mug of him and he used all his experience to not be outpaced and guard the ball back to Gomes.

Kaboul had one sloppy moment but that aside, he was magnificent again.

Ekotto was fine defensively, and had a few good moments going forward, but a couple of times looked like getting caught out when being casual. I love my super cool Benny but he doesn't half give me the jitters.

Lennon made two goals, and but for some good defending from their centre backs, and a touch of hesitancy from our forwards, he could have had another 2 assists. Superb performance, my man of the match.

Jenas was playing well but he went and hurt himself. I felt for him, but I do wish he was not so injury prone.

Modric was unbelievable yet again. Dictated our entire game from box to box, scored a beauty, won a penalty and played top pass after top pass, still keeping us in possession when he needed to. Fantastic central midfielder.

Bale toyed and tormented with his man all night, took a bundle of kicks and generally continues to show that he's a special player, a true superstar in the making.

Pavlyuchenko wasn't awful, but he wasn't good. The volley was hard, granted, but after Lennons superb cut back Pavlyuchenko conspired to fluff the sort of chance I really expect him to put away. Was shocked at his reaction to coming off.

Crouch worked hard. Crouch brought others into play. Crouch had the turning circle of an 18 wheeler. Crouch scored against European opposition. Well played on the whole, he basicalyl did what I've come to expect of him and he did it far better than most could hope to.

Palacios had perhaps his best game in a Spurs shirt in 2010. Very happy with his performance, he tackled brilliantly and was good on the ball too.

Defoe looked hungry as fuck and very sharp. I can't wait for his full return.

Ditto Kranjcar. He came on and showed some form. Good touches, dribbling, passing and imagination.

I think you're allowed to like Modric at home. It's just away that he's the worst player seen in top flight football since Ali Dia.

You got it half right.

The other half (away games), ole Gibbsy wants Modders to start, only further up the pitch in Crottenham hotspur.

Crottenham is looking good what with Palacios showing form as a DM, and Kaboul getting amongst the goals...Eek

haha

If you want to take the piss, I suggest you use Lennon. Because ole Gibbsy was wrong about him today.

Don't forget to mention I said Modric would improve his goals/assists record today. Because I specifically said it.

I thought the passing of Ekotto was shocking,he barely passed the ball to any of our players tonight and Palacios wasn't much better.

I think we can file this one under bloodless coup.

That said, this was what we used to call in the good old european days "job well done". At times these games - where the opposition have come clearly with the game plan to loose - the lack of competitive spark can spread and you find yourselves getting a bit sloppy, and at times we did, but for the most part we were efficient, always in complete control and on the odd occasion that could have turned a stroll into a.....speed walk...people like Gallas, Kaboul & Palacios did exactly what was required.

One area I have always given Redknapp credit for is recruitment, and the signing of Gallas is right up there with his best. This bloke is class, he has that Kingesque ability to move really quickly across the deck and nip and nibble at a player with the ball. There was a couple of moments in the second half (and in most games he's played for us) where Marin was bearing down and if he goes past Gallas the whole game could have changed, but despite having a quite night when the question was asked he just efficiently dealt with there one danger player, outpaced him and got himself in front. It's not spectacular, slide by the seat of your arse, last ditch blood and thunder defending, it just quality, zero drama get the job done. Brilliant signing.

After Gallas, Kaboul was again really good when called on, and something else I like about him, that he's always had in his locker is goals. I'm pretty sure the first spell he had with us he scored 3/4 goals as well. A really good habit for a CB to have.

Palacios was his usual busy competent self. Also played a couple of nice balls out wide and played Defoe through beautifully. I'm sure the Palacios can't pass "blinkered muppets" all missed this "expansive and incisive" pass and the fact that palacios made 63 our of 66 passes and will only remember the three he misplaced.

Just for comparison purposes as Huddelstone is touted as the next most defensive CM, against Twente (another very similar game) Hudd made 47 out of 53 passes that night.
Palacios also made 4 tackles to Hudd's O as well as passing more, more accurately and setting up a clean through, as well as helping us keeping a clean sheet. Not bad for a player who can't pass, runs around too much and has been out of form since the second week after he arrived here.

Lennon had his best game for ages. Set up two goals with good wing play, and a couple of other good moments, but several other promising situations were wasted with poor choices or poorly executed final balls but at least he was busy and saw more of the ball than Bale.

Man of the match was Moric though. 86 passes (97) he just ran the gaff all night long and it is always great to see him score - he needs to do it more.

Ratings:

Gomes 7 - default.

Hutton 7 - some good play but some sloppy stuff as well.

Gallas 7.5 - Quality

Kaboul 7.5 - Good game and that all important first goal.

Ekotto 7 - Same as Hutton, some good play on the ball but gave possession away a few times with careless passing.

Lennon 7.5 - Two good assists and plenty of involvement, but just lacks that little bit of intelligence at times. Still, best game for quite a while.

Palacios 7.5 - Really Good to see him get most of game under his belt. Did what he has always done and did it well. If we insist on playing Modric in CM, then Palacios is probably the best player to play next to him.

Modric 8 - Still want him released from this CM responsibility for tough games but he was the best player on the pitch tonight by a long way. 87 accurate passes is phenomenal and to cap it with a goal was icing.

Bale 7 - A couple of "Bale" moments but - and this is becoming repetitive - there were a few times when his defensive awareness and willingness to bust a gut to help Ekotto (and the team) were really shoddy. As brilliant as he is going forward, the coaching staff have got to get this into him. It's vital, especially on days when he's not having a blinder.

Crouch 7 - Worked hard and took his chance well as well as crafting a couple of chances for others. 23 passes from 29.

Pav 5 - Hard to think of too much positive really, 10 passes all night in a game like this is piss poor. He's fast becoming a russian Keane. Talented but enigmatic and lacking in bollocks.

Defoe 6 - Looked lively but wasted a couple of good positions.

Please let us sign a decent striker who has brain & bollocks in the January window.

Wow, weird stat from UEFA CL site. Crouch covered more ground than anyone in that game 13.56 km. Modric next 11.52.

Gomes - 6.5 - What... who?!

Hutton - 7.5 - Good, maybe lost the ball a few times, but made a few good runs. NEeds to communicate with Lennon better.
Gallas - 8 - Solid again. They weren't getting past him, not in a million years. He is winning me over. Damm! LOL
Kaboul - 7.5 - Tidy. Might as well have taken a shower and sat back after his goal.
BAE - 5 - Again. Gave the ball away many times, might have led to goals against better oppo. Caught out of position too often.

Lennon - 7.5 - Two lovely assists, good pace, getting back to best again. He's getting there.
Jenas - 6.5 - Looked pretty good, unfortunate though.
Modric - 8.5 - MOM A couple of minor lapses in concentration, but he absolutely controlled the pace of the game from the first pass to the last and his short passing and tackling back were outstanding.
Bale - 7.5 - Only an average by his standards performance. Great pace and crosing. Was unlucky with the free-kicks.

Pav - 5.5 - Held the ball up well. Should have done much better with his chances.
Crouch - 7.5 - An assist and a goal in Europe, you come to expect it really! Why are people allowed to blatantly foul him so much?

Palacios - 7 - Showed some signs of the player we bought, but against that opposition any defensive midfielder would have looked good. Distribution still dubious.
Defoe - 7 - Looked extremely lively. He'll be firing them in in no time.
Kranjcar - 6.5 - Looked for the ball a lot, needs more game time.

I'm gonna agree with you in nearly all but BAE; He gives me kittens, keeps trying over ambitious cross field passes and is caught out of position too ofyen. He is a large part of why we dont get NIL too often. ery talented but less concentration than watered down beer.

Ole Gibbsy has a Modric thing and I seem to be getting a Hutton thing. The guy drives me crazy as attacking wise he is excellent but 3 times (yes 3 times) at 2-0 he gave the ball away allowing a break that a more confident team would have taken better advantage of. I think the guy epitomises how a flair or fast running player's good moments always outweigh the poor moments in your memory. If he was a midfield player he would have got a 7.5 from me but as a defender it's a 6.
