Very very good first half, very disappointed with the second half effort. Last game of the season, at home, and instead of trying to continue entertaining and making up for some other poor performances the team sits back and passes it sideways for 45 minutes.

Lloris - 7 - Nothing to do.

Naughton - 7 - Way improved and looking very comfortable now, almost Walker-esque today. Smart player too. Needs to work on doing something with the ball in advanced areas.
Dawson - 8 - Seemed to win everything.
Chiriches - 7 - Also seemed to win everything, couple of loose passes though.
Rose - 7 - Not particularly great but didn't really do anything wrong and was very involved.

Sigurdsson - 5 - Couple of passes to start counters but overall pretty invisible. Think he is off in summer. I like him but it just isn't working out, maybe a new manager can fix it.
Sandro - 7 - Won a lot of balls, fouled quite a bit but overall good.
Paulinho - 8 - All over the place and got into several great positions, if his shooting/finishing was better he'd have a hat trick. Got the first goal.
Eriksen - 5.5 - Very average but for one great through ball.

Kane - 7 - Worked very hard, linked up play well, got into good positions.
Adebayor - 7 - Didn't seem to work quite as hard as Kane but had more touches and played well overall. Offside calls were getting ridiculous though.

Veljkovic - 6 - Nothing fancy, distributed the ball and put a couple tackles in.
Bentaleb - 6 - Not really enough time to do anything but seemed a standard display.
Pritchard - NET - Hope he is part of the team next season, looked very alive today. Eriksen should have played him through.

Lloris.........7......Clean sheet for his last game. Match fee forfeit for not doing anything.
Naughton..7......Improves by the game. Almost solid these days. Silly yellow again.

Dawson....7+...Captains innings. Leads by example. Unlucky not to score.
Chiriches...7.....Careless distribution. Could be a key player next year.
Rose.........7......Steadier today. Looks almost worth keeping at times.
Sandro......7.....Pity he wasn't played last week. Did his job effectively.
Siggy.........6.....A bit innocuous. Contribution less than it should be.
Eriksen.......7-...Lovely player but needs people to move for him. Hope he stays.
Paulinho.....8-....Better, more involved especially early on.
Kane..........7-....Boys a worker. Little impact in the second half.
Adebayor...7-....Wearing Defoe's old offside shirt. Not as effective as his ability demands..

Subs. Finished the game with several own grown/ younger players. Good to see.
So well done Tim.Improved on AVB's position when he was sacked.
But how well might AVB have done as the squad settled is an uknown
Pity you won't be able to put your learning curve into practice at Spurs.
Some good instincts but lack of experience told.

If he hadn't have faded so much in the second half I would have have gone for Paulinho for MOM. Chose Sandro instead.

Was always going to be a simple win to be honest. Rather disappointed we didn't continue the pace in the second half but pleased with the score, though it could have been more.

Glad to see some kids get a go, hopefully we will see more of them.

The squad has talent, we have potential, we just need someone who can unlock it. Today's performance has to be the minimum standard that we play next season, at least at home anyway.

It is a world cup year though, he probably understandably did not want to risk an injury so I let him off for that one.

Can't be bothered with full ratings but Naughton deserves a special mention. I've always been a supporter of his but especially so today - he was very, very good for most of the game. Silly booking as @JimmyG2 said (always stupid when a player talks their way into the book) but some of the positive things he did really stood out. In particular, the touch and ball across for Paulinho just after the first goal were of the highest quality. I really hope he stays but he has already made noises about wanting to be first choice somewhere and I wouldn't begrudge him that.

Well done Kyle.

Does anyone know how many times Paulinho and Sandro started together this season ? To me the best matches I have seen Paulinho have for us have been when he plays as an attacking midfielder partly because he regularly gets into goalscoring positions. More than any of our other midfielders except Eriksen and today more than Eriksen.

MidfieldTim and the road to Damascus

What a shame it took until the final game for Sherwood to learn a couple of valuable lessons. That a central midfielder with some positional discipline isn't just useful, but almost obligatory in a 442. He learnt that having a more defensive type of CM in there doesn't equate to a less creative approach. He also finally learnt that we are much better without Lennon - also disproving a wider held belief by some of our stupider fans.

I say he learnt, but there is no real guarantee of this, he learnt nothing from the Newcastle away game, so there is every chance he may end up managing somewhere like Newcastle next year and playing Remy in CM.

Today was best first half we played under Sherwood since Newcastle and it was really good at times. The addition of Sandro meant there was glue binding our play together, some shape maintained, a platform on which others could dance. The addition of tall Icelandic Lennon instead of the small insipid one, meant there was more interplay, more involvement, and the way they all interacted was a joy at times.

There was some great approach play today, no-one had a bad game and many played very well, the only disappointment was the omnipresent carelessness with the ball which meant many, many great situations petered out when a little bit more care would have created numerous quality chances today.

I still think Kane's inclusion hinders more than it helps Adebayor, but the boy has clearly proved he's a good squad option. I think he struggles with finishes that need a bit of finesse or thinking but he's better when it's an instinct thing. He works hard and his touch/technique is pretty good.

It was great to see Veljkovic, Bentaleb & Pritchard all get on the pitch as well.

There were no real negatives but it's hard to assess the value. Villa had nothing to play for and although they didn't exactly bend over it never had the feel of a normal "it matters" type game. There was a distinct lack of "edge".

I thought our work off the ball was good today and much more coherent. It was noticeable how few real chances Villa got today compared to most of our games under Sherwood - Sandro (not just Sandro but the knock on effect of having a proper midfield) and the better general work rate off the ball were a large part of this.

It was also a little disappointing that we didn't keep the ball better second half and really push home what was the much bigger superiority we had in the first half.

Individual last hurrahs:

Lloris - Moribund

Naughton - Worked hard, saw plenty of ball, pretty limited.

Dawson - A couple of careless passes but apart from that OK.

Chiriches - A couple of careless passes (but both times immediately recovered the ball) but apart from that very good game and very involved.

Rose - Worked hard, very involved but so fucking careless with the ball at times, really is a problem for him.

Tall Icelandic Lennon - Good involvement first half, hand in first goal, more visible and involved than the little insipid version but still a bit meh.

Paulinho - Pretty good first half, pretty poor second half.

Sandro - Good game. Provided that much needed platform so players like Eriksen, Paulinho, Sigurdsson could play football behind two strikers.

Eriksen - Very good game.

Kane - Decent game, worked hard, wasted a very good chance when clean through.

Adebayor - Worked hard, saw shitloads of the ball, another one of those days when his touch just deserted him at times though. banged the penalty away with aplomb though.

Veljkovic - Great to see him get on and look perfectly unfazed, got involved, made a couple of important tackles and played the ball neat and tidily.

Was Siggy really on the pitch in the first half?
Yes he was. Being played out of position, RW ffs, and not surprisingly looking like a fish out of water.
This idea that you can just pick any player, stick him anywhere on the pitch and still get a performance out of him is ridiculous.
I reckon nearly every one of our midfield have probably played in 3 or 4 positions this season. Nuts imo.
Lets hope we get someone in who doesnt just pick names out of a hat.
edit, should add this was last game of the season against a very weak team who had nothing to play for. I wouldnt read much into any of it.

Haha Paulinho warming up for the World Cup

Welcome fucking back. Where have you been for the last 6 months after your great start for us?
Not sure where he's been but he's managed to score 8 goals in a totally disjointed team this season.

He is a top notch player who has been played poorly too often. Not allowed to move under avb and played next Chadli or siggy in a 442 under Sherwood.

When he lifts the world cup next month maybe people will realise what a good player he is.

I didn't think we played that well and I could not see any real difference the inclusion of Sandro made to our midfield.
I felt we got the rub of the green today,we got the early goal that encouraged us to go forward.
The first goal was a poor miss from Paulinho that luckily dropped back into his path, the second was a complete miss by Adebayor that hit their player on the side of the head and the third was a penalty that Agbonlahor handed us.
Good performances from Eriksen and Kane especially in the first half.

Lloris - 6 not very busy

Naughton - 7 he just looks like a capable right back in every game now, unfortunately so many fans base their views of him on his unreliable appearances at left back

Dawson - 7.5 excellent throughout

Chiriches - 6.5 still tends to dwell on the ball sometimes and made some sloppy passes, but good defending overall

Rose - 7 good all around

Sandro - 6.5 looking more like the real Sandro at last

Sigurdsson - 6.5 constructive, creative and usually quite busy

Eriksen - 6 a relatively quiet game, but still the origin of many of our better moves

Paulinho - 7.5 dynamic first half before he faded

Kane - 7.5 impressive first half, with hard work and intelligence everywhere, then a bit peripheral as we closed down the game

Adebayor - 6.5 similarly, he was semi-unplayable for the first half-hour and then he relaxed once we were 3-0 ahead

Veljkovic - 6.5 calm, reliable and sensible in possession and positioning

Bentaleb - 6 good

Pritchard - NET however, it is worth pointing out that he took up a number of good positions in space between the lines, but no one passed to him

We were able to play without proper width because Villa lack pace on their flanks, which I think encouraged Sherwood to remove Lennon and insert Sandro. It's not as if the fullbacks spent the match hurtling up the lines to make up for the lack of wingers. We just passed the ball patiently through Villa or counter-attacked, because they weren't very energetic in their closing down.

I find it hard to choose a MotM. Three players stood out for different reasons. Dawson was good throughout the game, not just in the first half, so perhaps he should be MotM.

I love these :ROFLMAO:

Think Daws deserves a better shout out though, he was great today. Completely shut down Villa's route one outlet. Also special mention to Sandro's long ball distribution, never knew he had it in him

Eriksen's through ball to Kane was delicious.

Paulinho also played a very cute little ball in the first half, sort of no right to sort of thing - with the angle and the congestion around him.

Assist aside, i thought Danny Rose was bloody awful. Short passing was terrible, and he kept getting away with completely vacating the left side.

Naughton was excellent and yet some of you are putting Rose on par with him with your ratings...

Its a game of opinions i guess.
