Just got back from the match, thought it'd be fun to look through the forum commentary during the match...

Really disappointing how many on here jump on Winks at any given opportunity. The whole team were playing shit, we looked half arsed and second best to everything. Dele made some awful passes and Son had one of the worst halves of football for us. Kane was static and hardly in the game. But it's Winks who was singled out as the one 'not good enough for this team' or 'for this level'.

Knee-jerk. He played well in the second half, as did the rest of the team.

I thought Winks was pretty bad to be honest. Even though he was a bit better second half he still had that tendency to try and dribble his way out of trouble and turn straight into dangerous situations in the middle of the park.

Never thought I’d say this after his first season with us, but Sissoko actually felt like he provided some semblance of control when he came on. I didn’t feel he was going to give the ball away needlessly, which is more than I can say for the rest of the team.

It’s only been 2 games, but I think Jose would have become very aware that he’s got a job on here with the way we are defending.

Yes it was a close call between you, @Primativ and Mou for who was to take over from Poch. Luckily all of you are winners and we plumped for the guy who costs us 15 million and has, you know, actual winning... :D
Levy was lucky to have three such knowledgeable candidates, we’d all have been a success but it seemed only right to pick ‘the spurscial one’, but @Primativ and I have told Jose just pick up the phone whenever you like if you want to bounce some ideas off us.

Must have come down to a coin flip in the end. Very hard choice for Levy. Mou has won stuff for sure but is he really a "winner" like Primativ?

This match seemed like Ossie Ardiles was back in charge a kamikaze start to a full bloodied response in turning it round. Difference being we use to throw it all away under Ardiles that was pure gung ho but this defence has an uncanny resemblance something I'm sure Mourinho won't tolerate come January. Good to see Moura busting a gut tonight could never understand Poch's treatment of him particularly after our CL run which I thought was pretty appalling when he gave so much. All aboard the rollercoaster that is Tottenham Hotspur brilliant COYS!

Not sure which game you were watching? Winks was guilty of giving the ball away and actually creating chances for the opposition? I'm sorry but tenacity is not enough to play for Spurs. People are actually blind when it comes to Winks, it's unreal. You do realise Jose said it was a toss up who to take off, Winks or Dier.

Look, Winks was by far standout one of the worst players in that first half, let's not rewrite history. He improved like the rest of the side did second half, but the thing with Winks is, he just isn't good enough.

We aren't winning anything with him in CM for us. Mourinho is great but he isn't a magician. Not sure why some lesser minds like yourself can't see that.

If you can't understand the importance of "winning the ball back" in modern football then you are irrelevant.

If you can't see that in the first half the only Spurs player actually doing that was Winks then you are irrelevant.

Does that mean I think Winks should start for us? No. Does it mean I think he's the bollocks? No.

What it means is that he did something no other Spurs player was doing in that first half. Which is why he stayed on the pitch. The entire game.

Jose agrees with me. You don't. Guess how much I care for your opinion?

Try a little of the humble juice Jose's been drinking hey?

I popped in too a couple of times during the game but it’s the match thread. It is what it is.

To be fair he didn't.

The entire game.

Just saying...
Haha fair enough, not sure exactly the point here as haven’t read all the back and forth but winks is a fine little player, let’s see if Jose can help him to be more tactically aware so to not give the ball away as often in dangerous positions because the rest of his game is pretty decent and could be quite effective for the role Jose wants him to do.

fingers crossed as would be class to have an English spurs core win something for us.

Anyway, while Mourinho’s tactical nous is getting us through early games, it’s evident we need a CDM and some new defenders. We are brittle at the back, and that needs addressing over this season. Dier and Winks will probably get replaced by Ndombele and decent CDM, meaning that we should at least eliminate clusterfuckery in our defensive half when teams aren’t being bowled over by our attacking quartet

Get better memes my guy. Winners needs to keep their meme-game on point. 5 year old Breaking Bad memes is not going to cut it.

Have to say, when Dele was subbed, the whole of the stadium got up to applaud and sing his name. And it carried on until he reached the bench and the bench were applauding him. Would have done hi. The world of good that.

walking down the high road afterwards there was a Greek on the mobile talking to his mate or mum Raving about the number 20,”I don’t know his name, but what a player”.
