We cannot sell all our home developed players.

I agree with you mate, he's our most promising CB since Ledley King! He's an aerial threat at set pieces as he's already proved last season when he scored a couple of goals and I think he'll definitely score double figures if he's given more time on the pitch.
Defensive errors will also decrease (hopefully) when he gains more experience.

And I loved his funky beard he had at the beginning of the season! :)

Would be more sad to see him leave than Bale to be honest. Homegrown talant and I think he did exceptionally well when put to the test against the Manchester teams but perhaps lacked concentration against teams in the bottom half.

Hope this isn't true. If there isn't space for him then he needs to go out on loan - not sold.

IMO. I cannot see the point in buying another CB, then selling or loaning out Caulker who has huge potential, and counts towards our home- grown players

Never been convinced by Caulker, but kept saying he's young and will improve. Looks very slow on the turn and gets beaten too easily for me. Vlad by all accounts has massive potential, very good on the ball so much so that he has been talked about as a future cm.

£9 million is a lot of money for this player, but I believe he can make it with us. I hope they do not sell him.

I like to see a homegrown player come through as much as anyone else but i cant help but think Caulker is vastly overrated. I never seen anything to warrant the glowing plaudits

How old does he have to be before you decide he isn't a top 4 central defender ?

By about 24 or 25, one should be able to see whether a defender has what it takes. By 26 or 27, a central defender should stop being "potential" and start being "realisation". A top quality defender can play at that level well into his 30s.

It's well-accepted that central defenders mature more slowly than wingers and strikers, because the role requires a higher proportion of game-sense and anticipation and a defender cannot conceal his lack of experience using pace, the way an attacking player can.

The rest of your post is a bit silly. You aren't seeing what AVB is seeing, what the entire football scouting world is seeing, including the England setup and - apparently - ambitious Cardiff City. What you are seeing is a promising young central defender in his second Premiership season. That's how one of those looks.

Let Chiriches get here first. Give it a couple of weeks and if Chiriches looks up for it, send Caulker on loan. If we get an injury before the winter window, we can just end his loan and bring Caulker back into the squad and he will have match minutes under his belt.

Agreed. Also Kabouls contract runs out this season. Guessing he will have to prove his fitness too

Yeah, very true. Levy is not one to let a guy run his contract out, so it says a lot about the uncertainty surrounding Kaboul that he hasn't signed a new deal despite only being 27 years old.

He is the best 21 year-old CD in the country and by the time he is 25 he will be the best CD in the country. I'd take him over Smalling and Jones as a specialist central defender.

So far this week I have read Carroll is the next Modric and Caulker is going to be better then Jones and Smalling.... Some fans are seriously deluded![/quote]

Most young players suffer in their second season as surprise turns to expectation.
He will need to deal with that this season and start to deliver. He is still raw but has time to learn his craft.

I thought Caulker looked very good in spells but struggled particularly next to Dawson. I certainly think he has the potential and given time will be an excellent centre back. It's funny, Swansea fans raved about how classy he was and great at bringing the ball out but we've not really seen it yet and some of our fans are calling him a 'lump'. Bassong always struggled with us but has looked good elsewhere. Kaboul looked dodgy at the beginning too.

It would be a real shame to let Caulker go. He is home grown and has some real potential.

How many of the people who rate Caulker highly would want us to buy him for £9M if he played for another team? Like all fans we have a tendency to overate our home grown players.

Having watched Caulker playing for Swansea, Spurs and England U21s I haven't seen anything that would suggest he is going to be a 'special' talent. Currently he is our 4th choice CB and doesn't cover any other positions. If AVB doesn't rate him and is prepared to let him go then £9M is a decent fee.

I think Caulker may well go on to have a decent career provided he gets regular 1st team football. He's not going to get it at Spurs. He is too good to be allowed to stagnate and not good enough to be a regular 1st choice. For the sake of his career I think the best choice may be for him to move on.
