How many of the people who rate Caulker highly would want us to buy him for £9M if he played for another team? Like all fans we have a tendency to overate our home grown players.

Having watched Caulker playing for Swansea, Spurs and England U21s I haven't seen anything that would suggest he is going to be a 'special' talent. Currently he is our 4th choice CB and doesn't cover any other positions. If AVB doesn't rate him and is prepared to let him go then £9M is a decent fee.

I think Caulker may well go on to have a decent career provided he gets regular 1st team football. He's not going to get it at Spurs. He is too good to be allowed to stagnate and not good enough to be a regular 1st choice. For the sake of his career I think the best choice may be for him to move on.

From watching a lot of Caulker at Swansea, I would have been happy with us parting that sort of cash for him. Especially when you consider the money spent on Jones and Smalling, who both imo are far worse prospects.

It's far too early to be deciding to sell Caulker in my opinion.

Agreed. Although a loan would be positive IMO. He won't get much game time if Kaboul does get back to fitness and often wouldn't get in the match day squad. Send him on loan for a year.

Next season Kaboul may be done for or Dawson will be 31 by then. Or someone will inevitably be after Vertonghen. No benefit to selling him at all.

I think he just needs another year of consistent football to develop and get rid of the errors.

And therein lies the problem. He looked a hot prospect at Swansea where he was a regular 1st team starter. A season later playing for England in the Euro U21s he looked awful. I just don't think he will get the game time at Spurs to realise his potential whereas at Cardiff he'll be 1st choice.

So much uncertainty at the back is the problem. If you knew Kaboul was going to be fit for 80% of the games then it would be worth sending Caulker on loan. If Kaboul doesn't play much and either Dawson or Vertonghen gets injured then we would suddenly be very short on numbers. I guess if we bring in Chiriches then he will provide cover, but he could take some time to adjust. I would probably keep Caulker in the squad and look at the situation again in January with regards to a loan.

Rodgers rated him as potential to be better than any other English centre half if he is for sale Rodgers will come all out for him.

Caulker what I have seen of him close up he's talented but still makes mistakes you expect from a young defender I.e panics and makes rash choices he could be coached to improve this I will not be happy if we let him go for 9 million he has the talent to be something special anybody remember kaboul at 21? Or even Ledley? Or vidic? Or piqué?

Really hope Caulker is NOT for sale, as Spurs do need at least 1 local player pushing for a regular place. He deserves time. But as mentioned, he's still learning the game so will need a lots of match practice this season otherwise his career will stagnate.

The first game I took my son to was v West Ham in 1998. Rio Ferdinand was the greatest thing since sliced bread but he got made a mug of by Jurgen, ending up on his arse for the only goal of the game. Not too many years afterwards he was sold for £31m and was the number one defender in England. No-one dumped him for making a panic-induced high-profile error; they stuck with him and he learned from it.

By about 24 or 25, one should be able to see whether a defender has what it takes. By 26 or 27, a central defender should stop being "potential" and start being "realisation". A top quality defender can play at that level well into his 30s.

It's well-accepted that central defenders mature more slowly than wingers and strikers, because the role requires a higher proportion of game-sense and anticipation and a defender cannot conceal his lack of experience using pace, the way an attacking player can.

The rest of your post is a bit silly. You aren't seeing what AVB is seeing, what the entire football scouting world is seeing, including the England setup and - apparently - ambitious Cardiff City. What you are seeing is a promising young central defender in his second Premiership season. That's how one of those looks.

If expressing an opinion that is different to yours is being silly then so be it. Interesting no bigger club is knocking down our door trying to sign him. SAF moved swiftly to sign young CDs like Smalling when he saw their potential.

Can someone tell me what part of his defensive game, not his attacking at corners, is actually good or outstanding ?

Agree completely. Peolple making out he has had his chance and that's it. He is incredibly young, especially as Centre Backs go.

The only defender I can think of who has looked the finished article at his age was Rio and look how much he cost.

You didn't even read my post. I don't think I mentioned my own opinion at all. I listed AVB's opinion and the opinions of the scouting community, the England setup and Cardiff City. What's silly is putting your opinion so baldly and arrogantly, right after asking a sensible question about when one can expect a "top 4" defender to show his paces. You provided yourself with your own answer and then proceed to contradict it, in the face of the entire footballing community. Which is silly.

Hope he doesn't go tbh. He's homegrown and that's priceless in terms of squad dynamics. Have to have some players that genuinely give a shit about the club!

We seem to be bringing in a new central defender and appear to be open to offers for Caulker so someone at the club thinks we can do better.

The only reason I think we might sell Caulker is that we need money and can't shift the players we want out, because we are asking too much. If only DL would just do a summer sale and clear out those not needed. Caulker has shown ability to play at this level and defenders just get better with age and experience...keep him

Don't forget that Barnett is caulker's agent as well. Probably just leaked this to wind us up.

He is the best 21 year-old CD in the country and by the time he is 25 he will be the best CD in the country. I'd take him over Smalling and Jones as a specialist central defender.

:ROFLMAO:....thanks for that...this week has been so spurs stressfull i needed a larf.

Would be a good move for him, personally. He'd get a lot of games and would help him develop into a top centre back.

But i Don't want him to go. As said before MD and YK struggle to put in 30 odd games between them.

Nothing better than seeing a young pup make his way though the ranks and shine in the first team squad......just like Jamie O'Hara did lol
