Apologies if somebody has already responded to this post, totoner. The thing is, our club hasn't denied we've spoken to them, has it? I thought Ajax (Overmars) said they'd "received an unofficial approach from Tottenham", to which our club responded with something along the lines of "we've made no official approach to any club for their manager"..

See, both statements are saying the same thing, it's just that our press are too stupid to recognise it. An approach HAS been made, but it's just a tentative approach, to gauge interest from all parties, rather than an actual official approach, as in to FDB and/or his agent. Overmars clearly stated we'd phoned him, and he had no choice but to inform FDB because it could be a great opportunity for his. However, a phone-call is not official, only a written approach is, I believe?
The way you've explained it makes total sense actually.

Of course. The whole charade of managerial link and subsequent denial is always irritating, especially when there seems to be substance behind it. As you say though, if the initial contact is by telephone then the club can easily deny that there's been an official approach.

He isn't a good decision maker. I don't think he has the highest football iq. IF he were to be coached to be a role player, doing one specific thing very well, I could see him becoming a good player. I think he would need every decision to be made for him though, he needs to have a gameplan that he cannot deviate from. I suspect that a strong manager could do this.

IMO thats exactly what happened with Walcott at the scum and look how impotant he is to them. Coaching and specific roles can make a limited player very useful. Almost devastating. But useless for anything else

Tottenham released a statement in which they denied making contact with De Boer, but the former Dutch international insists officials from White Hart Lane had approached Ajax.

“They talked informally with Ajax about my contract,” De Boer told Gazzetta dello Sport. “I think they are quite happy with their manager, but it is normal that they get information about a possible successor, as have Liverpool in the past.

“Liverpool had four candidates and asked me if I was interested. That time I said I wanted to stay at Ajax.

“I’m very happy here, but if a club came with an interesting perspective and a good team, I would consider the proposal. I want to understand what contribution I could give

I think we are simply covering our tracks. Tim is a PR nightmare and he causes a shitstorm over every little thing. I doubt they want him attracting more negative attention than necessary.
