Sorry if this has been posted before, but i'd like to know why Spurs get so much hate from other supporters. I can understand it from our london rivals, but 'neutral' fans seem to love it when things go badly for spurs. Why is this?

We play great football, are generally british, are run very well as a club etc. In the first half of the season we were the most exciting team to watch and last year in the champions league we really brought some excitement and freshness back to the competition that had been lacking for a while.

This is by no means a 'why always us', Balotelli style thread, I don't mind the ridicule as it only unites us and makes our glory moments all the sweeter. I am just generally interested to know where the Spurs hate from the average football fan comes from. Is it jealousy? Are we doing what other clubs only wish they could do? I remember when Arsenal went out of the champions league this season many fans praised them and said they had done england proud etc. But when we went out last season, and after Saturday nights horror, all we get is laughed at and mocked. I have many mates who are fans of a selection of english clubs and as soon as the final whistle went in the champions league final they couldn't wait to start their ridicule of spurs, completely ignoring the fact that chelsea, a team owned by a russian war lord, had just won a trophy they barely deserved to be in the semi-final for. It baffles me. Thoughts?

They didn't like us before and every opposition fan likes to see another team and fans suffering. It's more acute now because we are starting to become a threat and the club is moving in the right direction. You can see it from the fans and even from the opposition players that they were almost more happy that we didn't make it than them making it, which tells you straight away that they are concerned about us. They're going to be in for a shock though if they think this is going to keep us down, there is no chance in hell that we aren't recovering from this to be even better.

I have noticed a lot of fans tend to hate us more now, whether it is partly due to Harry Redknapp or the fact that we are now a club not to be messed with. No more cheap transfers from Tottingham, Levy knows how to deal with other clubs and we don't get our best players poached so easily now.

Some United fans I spoke to think they can get Modric now and were happy that Chelsea won, meh don't think United can afford Modric.

We think we're better than we are and always expect better. Seriously, though, we have been shit in the Prem - laughing stock. Now we're having some sort of success there's a certain amount of envy.

We're not the most popular of clubs, but if any other team had been in our position tons of spurs fans would've ridiculed them to high hell. I don't think its just a spurs thing, lots of people simply enjoy seeing others fail (the more extreme or ridiculous the circumstances the better). You mention everyone lauding Arsenal's performance in the home leg against Milan when they almost pulled off a miraculous comeback, but think back to the away leg- everyone was ripping the piss out of them after the 4-0 defeat.

I think we're quite unpopular amongst other PL teams fans because lots of spurs fans have ideas above their stations. We're one of the biggest clubs in the country and see ourselves as part of the elite, but we've been crap for the best part of 20 years, and that kind of attitude without results is bound to breed resentment. That said, I think there are quite a few teams less popular than us at the moment. Plenty of neutral fans enjoy our open, attacking style and I think our players are likeable on the whole (Bale has started to rile some fans, but we don't have any shit-houses like Terry and Cole in the team). 3 of my friends who never followed a team have started supporting spurs in the last 2 years, so we must be doing something right!

It's got nothing to do with Spurs it's just hate in general. Most fans have conceded that their club will never compete ( correctly btw ). It gives them some satisfaction to be able to laugh at somebody ( anybody ). It's also because Spurs as a club is still bothering to try and compete with the established big clubs and people generally feel safer siding with the power-mongers. That's why they call Spurs delusional. If the fans just gave up and admitted ( the sad truth ) that the same clubs will always be at the top then Spurs fans could be accepted by other teams fans and could all be mediocre together.

I can always remember (from 1965-ON) being 'hated' for being a Spurs Fan....because 1\0 we had 'done the double' and 2) we were the best English team in the European sense (the only good team, as is the case now? haha!). It has always struck me that other fans seem to have 'passed on' that hatred, through the generations, father to son, and it has remained, to this day? It must also be remembered that most fans appreciate (most real football fans!) our style of football (Sir Bill's style....).
We should wear our 'Cockrel' with PRIDE....COYS!

Who cares? The vast majority of football fans are incredibly dumb ( thats why spurs community is so refreshing(y) ) and nothing but a bunch of sheep.

Fair enough, true Chelsea fans giving us stick, out of the 10 or so I know, I only count 2 as real fans and they have been fairly ok. Same with Arsenal. Out of all the goons I know I only count about 2 as real fans, the rest follow football at certain times ( usually when "their" club is doing well )

The most amusing thing out of all this for me has been the West Ham fans I know trying to give me stick! Now all these lads I count as genuine fans ( who will glory hunt a team with no glory!?? ) but they soon get reminded that they are currently London's 6th best team and have just spent a season playing in the Championship! These boys would sell their own mothers to just challenge for a Europa League spot!

It's easy to be critical and take delight in others "failure". It's very much a part of modern society unfortunately.

Basically, we're the Everton of the South and act like we're the Manchester United, and that rubs people up the wrong way

We're a very entitled set of fans. People talking about sacking one of the most successful managers in our history, whether you agree or not, just plays up to this

.

We were liked a lot when Jol was in charge but as soon as we started to play well and nearly got 4th we became hated. not because of Redknapp.

Also Newcastle 'Everyone's second team' ooh Pards he has done so well...NEARLY 4th? fuck that! Hate Newcastle! its so fickle.

I was thinking about this the other day...

My brother - a Newcastle fan - posted on Facebook after the FA Cup final a Liverpool fan goading status. This attracted the attention of a couple of his friends who support Liverpool, one of whom was particularly aggressive in her response. After a couple of posts between them, she piped up with "Only Tottenham fans annoy me more with their sense of entitlement than Newcastle fans".

First of all, I thought this was a bit rich coming from a Liverpool fan, and then I thought; "You know what? We're one of two teams who have won at least one major trophy in each of the last 6 full decades, so is it really that surprising that we expect to win stuff?"

So, yeah, maybe we shouldn't expect as much as we do, but there is some justification for doing so I think.

A sense of entitlement sums it up

Delusions of grandeur

Constant banging on about a history before most of us were born and one in which no one else gives a shit about, I'm already of the opinion that Arsenal's unbeaten perfect season is old news and meaningless today so God knows what other teams think when they hear our fans going on about doubles in 1961

The arrogance of the Spurs fans who were gloating way too early over Arsenal as if the league standings were final in Feb, the mind the gap rubbish that smacked of being small time so bad and ultimately proved so foolish as Arsenal not only closed that gap but created one of their own to finish above us.

To be honest the Spurs fans who go on and on about history and act like we are a big player in the English game above our station even annoy me so I can fully understand why other clubs would look at them and think "who the fuck do they think they are? haven't won anything for years yet think they're top dogs"

Pretty much all neutral fans (especially northern) absolutely despise 'Arry as they see him as the cockney crook who is the medias favourite person in the world.

City fans are ridiculous as they hate us because of the Ricky Villa goal. Really? You really want to hate a team for ever because they knocked you out of the fa cup 30 odd years ago?

Probably because until now it was their last chance at success, and didn't they absolutely batter us in the first game as well?

#1 - A lot of us think that too...(y)
#2 - They never thought they'd have any players capable of scoring a goal like that.
