I will be happy if we finish 17th in the league but as long as we we win the FA Cup, Carling Cup and the UEFA Cup.

I think by now it has become clear to me that Ramos only cares about the cup. Which is quite worrying considering the position we find ourselves in the league. :-|

I was tempted to be glib and say "winning cups looks good on the CV".

The case for Ramos' selection is that, if we lose in Krakow, we're out of the UEFA Cup (unless we score lots of away goals), so he's saving the likes of King, Bale and Modric for then.

Whereas hopefully the UEFA group opposition will be more manageable than going to Poland defending a slender 2-1 lead. So, once we've qualified, Ramos can start picking our strongest team in the league.

from official site:
Team news: Juande Ramos makes three changes to the side that beat Newcastle on Wednesday. Michael Dawson is fit again and comes in for Ledley King, David Bentley replaces Aaron Lennon and Gilberto is in for the injured Gareth Bale.
so five across the midfield, pav upfront alone again.
i think this could work

I'd trade 4th in the league and no cups without any hesitation.

Quite frankly with the squad available whats been picked today is a joke (unless they win of course).

This is the least confident I've felt about a match in ages, lets hope it's some Ramos magic.

Guys this is a difficult away game against a team lacking confidence, JR is obviously keeping things tight and looking to nick a goal. After what happened against Villa where quite honestly we were bullied out of the game like schoolboys I think this is a sensible tactic. We have quality on the bench to turn the game a la Wednesday, I have high hopes as I prepare to walk to the pub.

Formation is:
Gomes

Corluka Woodgate Dawson BAE

Zokora O'Hara

Jenas

Bentley Gilberto

Pav

never felt compelled to comment on the team selection before, but that is truly horrible.. Unless Jena plays out of his skin and gets forward then we stand no chance of creating anything.. although if the real Mr Bentley decided to show up we may be ok

Even with all the variations on the team in the 'starting XI for Pompey' thread, I bet nobody picked that 11. We have to win the midfield battle and protect the back, but if we continue the defensive improvements from the last couple of games I think we have a shot. Lets hope Bentley is back on form today.

Lennon deserves to be starting ahead of Bentley.

Bale has not been in any sort of form in the last two games and I think the rest will do him good.

Team: Gomes, Corluka, Assou-Ekotto, Dawson, Woodgate, Bentley, Jenas, O'Hara, Zokora, Gilberto, Pavlyuchenko.

Subs: Huddlestone, Lennon, Bent, Modric, Gunter, Giovani, Cesar

Woot!

Risky but I still like it. I am hoping they give up putting Modric in the middle and put him between the midfield and Pav.

Looks like the European games are serious business.

Both Gilberto & Bentley have good delivery from wide areas. Against that, both are pretty slow.

I hope Gilberto plays a blinder. However, if he doesn't, I can see Dos Santos & Lennon coming on sooner rather than later to provide us with some attacking pace.

Frankly, given the solidity of that line-up centrally - three solid CMs but no creative playmaker because Modric is on the bench - I would like to have seen both Lennon & Gio start because then we could have soaked up pressure and counter-attacked with genuine pace.

With the selection we have, we'll counterattack at a snail's pace.

hmmm difficult to judge as it can always work, but Ramos' team selection is getting to my nerves. We keep changing and changing the starting eleven. How can we gel? And poor Pav, up on his own again. Where will the support come from?

Anyway, let's hope we get something today. Getting worried tho.

I'm not at all surprised to see King and Bale rested - I think those are good decisions - though of course I don't have the inside info that JR has

I don't understand Corluka at RB or Gilberto LM

but both are international footballers playing in roles famililar to them - so can't blame JR in advance for it

the key positive is that he's picked our best mid 3 ATM - jj o'hara and zoko (assuming Zoko is mid)

and that's vital and gives me hope

so much depends on bentley coming back to form

it's hard on lennon, but his chance will come again - probably today

I really haven't a clue about how this game will go - I'll predict a draw
