not a pen to me, though its not the worst call Ive ever seen. however, it is a very harsh call considering the circumstances. the very best refs are the ones who dont feel the need to take over the game. this guy folded under the pressure. big game, felt it deserved a big call.

I wish some of these refs would get a fucking clue, it should only be under extraordinary circumstances that a player gets sent off in a game of this magnitude, yet opposing players always seem to get sent off against Madrid and Barca.

Nani's challenge wasn't a red card in an ordinary game and definitely shouldn't be in a game where the world is watching and anticipating a good game of football. The ref just ruined the game, a game on a level that we don't get to see too often. I wanted to see United and Madrid slug it out for the second half and the ref spoiled it imo and that just pisses me off.

One of the harshest red cards I have ever seen, but its Man Utd, its Old Trafford, so sod them

The way I see it, if that's a red then they need to state in the rules that feet are not allowed above waste height. He's clearly looking at the ball and trying to control it.

Same as Bales 2nd goal vs Newcastle, how about Zlatans overhead against England? His foot was way over head height

If that's a red these days, teams like Stoke and West Ham wouldn't make it to September without having a whole squad of banned players.

Ridiculous call. Anyone who says otherwise is clearly a ninnyhammer

2 parts to this story for me.

Main thing with this tackle is that instead of pulling away from the player on contact Nani looks like he kicks out/follows through with force studs up. Thats malicious, I dont care what anyone says, he had plenty of time to pull away.

Sorry but thats what I see.

And as a well informed poster said further up, its man utd at old trafford so fuck em!

The size or importance of the game should have no bearing on the decision whatsoever. If it's a red card it's a red card and just because you want to see a spectacle it doesn't change that.

In this situation though it clearly wasn't a red card. His eyes are on the ball the entire way and at best it was a yellow for dangerous play. Ridiculous decision by the ref and it changed the game in Real's favour.

Not overly worried as United have had that sort of decision in their favour on hundreds of occasions, but still a ridiculous decision.

Oh and Evra, Ferdinand and young should all be cited and recieve lengthy bans, thats not fair play and respect either.

Everytime an English team gets knocked out of a tournament all eyes turn to the referee.

I'm with Roy Keane on this one.
Studs into the body is a red card unless the ref shows leniency in this case he didn't.

I don't understand how anyone can defend that red card???

Seriously, he made a tackle, studs up, chest height. Regardless of whether he meant it or not, you don't just get a rid card for a deliberate tackle....

It's a dangerous studs up tackle, what ever way it's positioned.

Put it slightly differenmt, had the ball been lower and Nanu caught him studs up say in the knee in exactly the same manner - this wouldn't even be a discussion, everyone would say.. very bad tackle.

Not deliberate (like ade against arrsenal), jsut a poor tackle.

spot on - eyes on the ball and no intent mean absolutely bugger all
dangerous play is dangerous play whether you have your eyes on the ball or not

In The English game at any level that is not a red, in Europe you are giving the ref a reason to give a red.

As as edit, does that mean if you go up for a scissor kick and make contact with a head is that a red? to me its the same thing.

Depends on whether the defender got the ball first before you kicked. If you kicked him in the head without getting the ball, most likely a red.
