The more i watch the highlights of the England/Italy match and the Holland/Spain game, the more i realise how far behind we are with regards to the definition of "world class" when selecting a team.
None of our squad would've had the flair to bury that, lets call it what it is, world class header, like Van Persie. None of our squad would have the composure and ultimate tekkers to bring that amazing cross down and calmly slot it away, like Robben. We haven't even got anyone on the flanks who i would confidently say could even imagine such a dangerous and precise delivery.
Even at the back, we look thin & fragile, getting picked apart by some fast passing - the Dutch were organised and covered back in numbers, cutting off the supply lines and breaking faster than lightening. When they break it's measured in feet-per-second, when England break it's measured in how many cadburys creme eggs melt at room temperature.
I think you'll find that is a genuine scientific measurement, btw, i checked, so no need to look it up.
My point was, across the board, we are outclassed by five or six teams, probably more. We play like a bunch of guys who have met over the park, not a team at all. Every pass seems to take the recipient by surprise, or is played into space where no-one was running, but even the Spanish, whilst getting tonked, managed to produce the odd glimpse of practiced pass/move, attacking football.
Worst bit is that even outclassed, we don't even have the balls or bite to make a fist of it - the entire team before the match, including Woy - "We're going out there to go for it, lets really go for it, we're going to attack and we want the win".
Really? If that's them wanting a win, i'd hate to see them not feeling it - every time a break looked on we went backwards - for most of the match we were trying to draw them out and they weren't playing that game, yet we STILL carried on doing, over and over and over, and each time they made a break for it we looked like a pack of hounds chasing a hare.
No spirit, no passion, all too interested in how being here will further their career, not on how fucking proud they should be to have the chance to play on the biggest stage of all for their country and give it everything they've got.
We're going to be massively shown up when we crash out of this tournament. With Costa Rica winning then i dunno, we might even still make it out of the group, but we are going to be gang-raped in the knockouts.
