Why the 'ho ho ho' on Lloris? There was lots of talk about him moving to PSG or Monaco.

Just found it amusing at least part of your rather negative post has been proved wrong :)

First it was Sandro to be moved on this summer.

Then Lloris' name cropped up.

Now it's Vertonghen.

It seems that every summer Spurs sell their best player. I wouldn't be surprised if one or more of the above left.

There's all this talk from the Club about top four. Surely that's just talk? A Club with real top four aspirations would hang on to its best players. Suarez was very vocal last summer in that he wanted to leave Liverpool. The Club forced him to stay. Liverpool nearly won the league title.

Is Tottenham Hotspur serious about Champions League football - or is this just posturing?

Spurs need quality - not quantity.

A club serious about Champions League will hang on to its best players and invest in top-quality additions.

Where does Tottenham Hotspur stand?

i don't really understand your post. you've highlighted three players who have been linked(that being the operative word here) with moves away. of the three, all are still here and one has signed a new contract. you then say spurs are all talk, so what are the sandro/lloris/vertonghen transfer rumours? is that not just talk? spurs can't control what papers write and speculate about.

I'm basing this on what has happened in the recent past with Tottenham Hotspur. Bale, Berbatov, Modric, etc. It seems a matter of habit with this club to sell its best player every summer. There comes a time when the Club needs to commit to actually becoming a club in the top four. That means hanging on to its best players.

Lloris may or may not move this summer. There are cases when a player signs a new contract and is then immediately moved to another club. Lloris may be ready to move on - but if he does so it will have to be to the right club.

Maybe this summer is not the right time and that has become apparent in view of some terrific goalkeeping performances at the World Cup as well as developments at Barcelona (new goalkeeper) and the situation regarding Cech.

So he signs a new contract...

Meanwhile in the real world there is food chain and Spurs are someway down that chain. The biggest of the big will always get the players they want. Even Man United had to sell Ronaldo and Barca had to sell Figo. Nothing can really be done about it as much as we would wish things were different.

I agree with you there, except Liverpool had a very vocal want-away star in Suarez last season and he was told to stay and play. He did - and Liverpool nearly took 1st spot in the League.

I suppose that it's all a matter of timing. Perhaps this summer Spurs will sell some of the peripheral players, keep its best, and maybe add some real quality. There's always hope...

You're written that phrase twice in quick succession.

Berbatov: August 2008
Modric: August 2012
Bale: August 2013

So that's three players in five years. Not really the same thing, is it?

What's most amazing is this is actually a rare view among supporters.

You don't know what promises he was made to get him to stay. It has been reported that Barca and Liverpool had some sort of agreement in place from late last year. So perhaps he agreed to stay on the promise he could go this summer ?

Like it or not we do tend to sell our best players at a time when we are on the brink of building a decent side. Of course all teams sell, United selling Ronaldo for example. The problem lies with we can't replace those we sell with equal quality. We have to bring in a younger player with talent and hope they become golden.

We did the same with Modric. Also Liverpool only had the offer from Arsenal last year and it wasn't enough to tempt them whereas as soon as barca came sniffing with a big offer this summer he's gone.

Unfortunately with the power players have these days if one of the clubs from the very top table want one of your players they are probably going to get them.

The Tottenham defender is attracting plenty of attention after two years at White Hart Lane, says Mustapha Nakhli, but he refuses to confirm or deny whether the Blaugrana are keen

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen's agent has confirmed that "several clubs have registered their interest" in his client but refuses to specify whether Barcelona are among them.

The Blaugrana are understood to be in the market for a centre-back after Carles Puyol's retirement and with the threat of a suspended transfer ban hanging over them, having already made several other signings this summer.

Vertonghen was disappointing in his second season at White Hart Lane but has nonetheless drawn links to Camp Nou and Mustapha Nakhli, his representative, says that plenty of heads have been turned.

He told Het Nieuwsblad: "Several teams are interested in Jan. I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them.

"Tottenham is not a small club. It’s too soon to give them an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We'll see."

Vertonghen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012 and has since made over 80 appearances for the north London club.

Also capable of playing at left-back, he helped Belgium to the quarter-finals of World Cup 2014 before they were eliminated by Argentina.

If he stays then I expect 100% commitment from him this season because at times last season he played like a 3 year old sulking girl.

Barcelona fans saying reports of a bid/serious interest in Verts are ramping up. They don't seem to keen on him though with them saying they should pay a certain amount (can't remember) which is way less that what we'd want.

Levy knows CB (and LB) are our most problematic positions so I can't see him selling Verts as we could then need 3 CBs. And if he does....

problem is he only has 2 years left.Hard to see a scenario where he stays but doesn't sign.If Barca want him they will get him to me thats the reality. He won't commit to us while there is a chance for him to go there.Would think that Levy would prefer he signs .If he goes there won't be much change from buying his replacement.
