We spent a lot of money on Bentley, Bent etc and took a big hit on them. Not saying MS would flop as I really rate him but I can see why DL and the committee looked at other options with better financial perks when the value of MS and MM exceeded what we believe they are worth.

We came out on top with Bent after the sell on fee was realised. But agree with the rest of your post.

Its underwhelming whatever way you slice it.

and even that is an understatement mate. I'm genuinely gobsmacked by that last update if true. why would we push for him for 3 weeks and even get what is seen as a key piece for a lower price only to back off at the last minute???

i'm going to check the phones in case tank is on the other end.

Totally agree.

And Townsend probably is the worst fit out of the lot. I find that ITK staggering in truth and it makes me think that Poch hasn't had much say in it. Didn't start him against West Ham, left him out completely against QPR and he had a shocker out in Cyprus and frustrated in pre season and there's been very little to suggest he's going to adapt his game and play with more maturity and intelligence.

We have Southampton who seem desperate to get him even though we hold such a strong interest in MS.

I just have a nagging feeling that Levy and co think Townsend, and his brief England hype/success, believe he's destined for the top - and don't believe now is a time to sell as his stock could be higher in the near future.

I wouldn't be confident about that at all but that's what I suspect has scuppered this.
I'd say that was bang on the money.

I'd be incredibly surprised if we get offered anything close to £12m for Townsend again.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but i dont think i will be...

Amazing that pre MoPo not a single Spurs fan would have been crying out for MS. After a summer of hype people are throwing their toys out the pram.

Would love him if we get him, but as the old saying goes: there's plenty more fish in the sea... and Mauricio seems to be able to conjure magic from gloomy waters (Cork, Clyne, Rodriguez etc?!).

We've got a talented squad (and youth system!) and, given a chance, there's going to be a few more gems than we realise.

Townsend was terrible last night and definitely not good enough for a Top 5/6 club looking to improve. Maybe Poch thinks there is something for him to work with, but I can't see it...

People seem to forget that Andros played on the birthday of his brother that passed away. It was an emotional night for the family.

Agreed, but it would be nice to show a bit of confidence in your manager and get what he needs.

It's just frustrating that we seem to have found the real deal when it comes to the coach but are not giving him much backing. Pretty sure he spent more at Southampton last year. Even perma-skint Everton are splashing the cash with a big net spend!

We're asking him to work magic with the likes of Lamela, Chadli and Soldado who struggled last year, but can't even give him his top target. If levy was Everton chairman I doubt he'd have pushed the boat for Lukaku IMO, even though he was clearly Martinez top target.

That said we have a very big squad and there is talent to be worked with, maybe saving the cash for bigger signings in later windows will pay off?? don't seem to be many too good to be true deals post Griezmann.

You do realise we have bought 6 players?

Have you seen much of him play for Monaco ? I wouldn't say he's been rubbish. Third highest passer in the French league last year, 8 assists (Rodriguez top with 11), helped them into the CL. He's a quality footballer.
They had Falcao up front though, he can put the ball in with a blindfold on

It would also be financial suicide to start paying way over the odds for players.

And yet Everton annihilated their transfer record without any significant sales, and they are notorious for being cheap.

We're seeing nothing of the tv money. The rate we are funneling funds away for the stadium you'd think we will be paying up front in cash. Yet no doubt there'll still be massive naming rights and finance involved...

I'm not so sure Levy (or Baldini) are that daft. They seem know what time it is generally when it comes to player trading. I wonder of this is more about Townsend refusing to budge ?

exactly, they haven't previously spent money and most likely have the massive Fellaini dosh laying around

The other aspect might be that the deal still wasn't doable because Southampton were under valuing Townsend and over valuing MS ?
