The difficulty is that it is associated with Dieudonné who has been associated with anti semitism on more than one occasion. Moreover, and this is my opinion (although I am sure I am not alone in this) but it would not surprise me if the ambiguity is deliberate, just like when people talk about the 'Rothschilds' or the 'Zionists' when they mean Jews. I have seen plenty of posts on social media sites where people obviously don't have the courage to come out and say what they mean. I don't believe that BAE is anti semitic. I don't think Anelka is either come to that. What I do believe though is that just because a gesture is 'ambiguous' this does not mean that there are not more sinister undercurrents behind it. Just like not all anti-Zionism is just about Israel.
I did say Benny et al were naive and foolish to nail their colours to this mast. And as far as blurring the lines between Jewishness and Zionism goes, there's really no debate. Anti-Zionism is not equal to antisemitism.

Thought he was excellent in that Redknapp team... reliable full back. Didn't overlap too much, composed on the ball, decent delivery, didn't take himself too seriously. Deceptively good athlete as well. Couple of brain farts but certainly far far better than Rose/Davies/Lee/Naughton/Atouba and any other disaster we've had there in recent years.

Time moves on though, AVB didn't fancy him so let him go join Harry again... too many perceived digs at us via social media, the discipline issues at the WC, and the whole quenelle fiasco... club just wants rid of that association in my opinion.

Massive shame tbh, but I just look at it him as being part of that special team we had a few years ago, and how we're unfortunately not that squad anymore. Different time, different era, and none of them, Benni included, are part of it anymore.

I agree that anti zionism and anti semitism are two distinct beliefs and it is quite possible to criticize Israel without being anti semitic, just like it is possible to criticize a country where Islam is the official religion without being an Islamophobe. Unfortunately there are some people out there who do use the former as a front for the latter and I do believe that for some, the lines have become blurred.

For those that have sympathy for Benoit can they explain why Harry didn't want him back at QPR ?

He is the master of his own destruction as far as football is concerned. Talented player who had no interest in his highly paid career. Always going to end in tears.

Perhaps he tried to shoot a hip hop video in Levy's pool and the boats and hos didn't go down too well with old shinehead.

Ledley's probably got one tucked away somewhere but then he's permitted such things.

I think BAE was very good value we paid only two million for him and all in all did a good job.
He let himself down over the quenelle gesture, he had a chance to correct or fully explain himself but he didn't take it.

Absolutely. Good player. The quenelle gesture was probably the last straw - personally I was more upset at the photo mocking the team after the Liverpool 0-5 - and with no explanations forthcoming I can only assume the bosses were no longer forgiving. Sad really as he obviously loves/loved the club.

In the Premier league nowadays there is no room for a player who doesn't put the team first..........those days are gone.
Teams need players 100% focused on working for the team........100% of the time.
If players are not willing to do this then they won't last regardless of their ability.

I think he just couldn't be asked in the end - never liked football, easily distracted, couldn't take it seriously- and is just sitting out his contract before retiring to some beach somewhere with his riches.

IIRC it came out a day or two later that his team mates were throwing games and other corruption allegations?

If so, you can understand it if you're playing in the WC, and getting thrashed, then realise people around you are doing it on purpose.

Again, I could be mistaken about this, so please don't flame me if I'm thinking about the wrong thing, it is first thing in the morning. :)

There was a lot of issues before it started too, I recall. The team wouldn't board the plane until they'd been played and were playing badly to prove a point, no doubt something political. I can see why, if he wasn't involved, that would get frustrating to a play in his last chance of a World Cup, although you can't condone a headbutt no matter how soft and fluffy it was.

For those that have sympathy for Benoit can they explain why Harry didn't want him back at QPR ?

He said this http://www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/redknapp-assou-ekotto-has-not-produced-since-move-from-tottenham at the end of last season, and it's not impossible to believe that the club refuse to gift him to a club in the same league. I've not heard anything to say Redknapp didn't want him, or had bad things to say about him.

Pictures on Instagram after the Liverpool 4-0 loss, smiling, suggesting he was mocking AVB, the quenelle. He's burned his bridges.

Surely this bollocks wash quashed by several images previously of him doing the same hand gesture?

Anyway, he has been at our hme games this season, in a box. So the club must be happy to take his money back and have him around, even if he's not training/playing.

Crazy situation though.

Got in fights with Spurs players reportedly, got in fight with QPR players reportedly, gets in a fight with teammates right on a World Cup pitch. Supports racist gesture for which he shows little to no remorse.

Yeah, it's obviously all AVB.

Where was it reported that he got into fights with QPR and Spurs players?

Genuine question, I've not seen that reported.

And tbh, if I thought my team mate was throwing a game on purpose in the World Cup, I'd nut the **** as well.

Come off it BC. Yes his formed dipped massively after AVB took over, but in the previous seasons he got steadily better, and despite the myth that he would have at least one brain-fart per game, was actually a very consistent and reliable player under Harry.

He could be very cool under pressure, a good passer of the ball, and quite attack-minded. He certainly made a hell of a lot less errors than Rose or Walker.

Very good player and really clicked with Bale who was absolutely awful at tracking back during that period, unlike Lennon on the opposite flank helping Corluka, BAE had to do it all alone.

A bit flawed argument, isn't it? People are not forgiving Evans at all (sponsor withdrew, 12.000 fans signed a petition against him).
Outwardly having nazy-sympathies whilst employed somewhere with a history of a Jewish fanbase? Yeah, that's simply a detail, isn't it :stop:.

I dont think so. Google Nasri and quenelle. Ekotto isn't a nazi. Give me a break.....:)

No, sorry. I won't give you a break, and I don't have to google anything. They can make up false excuses in hindsight as much as they want. To even remotely question the link between the quenelle and anti-zionism is at the very best ignorant.
