Absolutely agree with your post - and the bit I copied is what I am hoping describes Wimmer. But some of the previous posters sem to be descibing a player much less capable than Dier when we bought him, which worried me
Fortunately most of those posts start with "I haven't really watched Wimmer but I played with him on FIFA a couple times" which is one step down from "I saw a 2 minute long 'Welcome to Liverpool' youtube compilation video on him"... If anyone has actually watched him play more than three or four times I would love to hear from them.

Looked for a few comments on Koln forums from before he started to be linked with a move away. Apologies for google-translate-mangled German:

"I'm generally of the opinion that he is our best player. But in the last two games he was also twice each very careless and somewhat erratic. Against Augsburg before the 1: 2, and today the first good chance of Schalke by Meyer. Both times he was a little over-motivated, missed the ball, thus enabling a very good chance. He must stop, then he is one of the best IV of the league."

"Wimmer's just the boss.Unbelievable, what is the gone for a walk after he had such a rough start here.Hopefully he can still get so consistent and good and will remain with us for a little longer. No later than this season I've become a huge fan of his, but he makes it a moment and just slightly."

"The guy has a ball hardness and accuracy that I seriously wonder if it would not be better off on the 6 than in central defense. Worse in the two-warfare Lehmann as he is probably not better than Lehmann, today a record-breaking 20 !!!Played bad passes as 6 has all.The few really good moves today took its beginning in often very cool opening balls Wimmer. The boy is certainly an absolute gem, bet that he will be traveling internationally in at least two years in the CL, with whom."

"If the season continues to run well, he will go in the summer. And that's perfectly fine if we obtain the appropriate fee - based, I would say this to the Ginter.Similar position similar playing style, similar experience and perspective. And Wimmer has still a long contract."

Also it appears Koln fans knew of our interest way back in November, when he had only played a handful of Bundesliga matches, so presumably this is a player we have been tracking for some time. Maybe one off Broomfield's list, or out of Mitchell's black box.

OK, this is definitely happening. Wimmer seems to suggest that we tried to sign him in the January window as well.

Makes sense, we probably wanted him lined up in the event that we did manage to sell Chiriches in January, or even Kaboul.

I would guest that it is more than a coincidence that Paul Mitchel joined us in late November. He got to work fast. That is a great sign.

Or maybe we didn't sell them because Wimmer didn't sign for us.

Very true, that is also possible.

Although I suppose given the concreteness of Besiktas' manager's interest, they wanted him, I think they just didn't meet Levy's evaluation.

I think JJ's post earlier in the thread suggested that he would need to be developed and brought through, rather than an automatic starter, which is what provoked this debate.

I understand that Poch wants to focus on young talent but i'd also be rather sceptical about bringing in too many youngsters that aren't finished articles.

The way I interpreted it was that he isn't a CB at his peak but rather one with potential and will be looking to get game time. To me he sounds like a great 4th choice CB with great potential. If he has played the majority of the season in the Bundelsiga he will defeinitely be playing for us next season but just eased in.

Can't see Poch buying him especially at 22 as a youth player for the future. If so then it is a stupid signing.

I'd happily just Vertonghen, Fazio, Dier and Wimmer as our options next season.

In Daily Star so truckload of salt etc....

Tottenham have SIGNED Kevin Wimmer - Marcel Koller

TOTTENHAM have completed a deal to sign FC Koln defender Kevin Wimmer, according to Austria coach Marcel Koller.

However, the 22-year-old - who joined Koln in 2012 - denied the German publication's claim and insisted there was no agreement in place to take him to White Hart Lane.

But according to Koller, that's not the case.

When asked about Wimmer's future, Koller said: "He has played exactly the same as I’ve seen him do already in Cologne.

"On the ball he is very calm, not rushed.

"He switches in the summer to England. With his young age he still has potential to improve. He has it all."

Makes sense to me.

It looks like Dier and Vertonghen will be our main CBs next season, with Fazio and Wimmer supporting. Vlad and Kaboul will definitely go.

I think he'll be a Vertonghen replacement for a couple of seasons time when he's familiarised with the league and developed enough.

I also think in a couple of seasons time we'll be looking to bring through someone from the academy to replace Fazio, possibly Veljkovic, Ball etc. when they are ready. It would be great next season if Tim were to take Milos at Villa for the season if they stay up as that would give him great experience.

In a couple of seasons I would suggest CCV will be in the frame for CB in the first team squad.

Oh absolutely true, i'm just worried we might repeat the Stambouli prchase from last season - slightly more experienced than some of our youngsters but not enough to make a difference to the first team, so ultimately a bit frustrating.

We need to buy players who are much more experienced than our own youth, as we have plenty of youngsters coming through who over the next few years will provide a number of squad players - some of whom will go on to prove that they can be of a Kane level, and others will stay as squad players

Played well today. Real raw potential.

Distribution from the back impressive also - has the attributes to be a really good Pochettino player imo.
