Hodgson simply doesn't have a clue what system to play, and it shows in that two players who have been excellent all season (Alli and Kane) looked out of sorts today.

Having said that, whilst Alli was genuinely a bit crap for the whole game, Kane simply didn't get the ball. We're using him as a target man which is not how he plays for Spurs, and as others have said if you play Vardy in that role we'll have the same problem.

For me the issue all stems from having Rooney in midfield. He plays these quarterback passes and the crowd and commentators coo and say 'wow' but they actually don't help at all. We need a midfielder who can get it into a striker's feet rather than simply at chest or head height.

For the next game I'd drop Alli for Wilshere or Henderson, push Rooney forwards and then drop Sterling for Vardy or Sturridge.

Lallana did okay in the first half, and I'm not sure if it would work playing Kane, Vardy and Sturridge, so I'd go:

Hart

Walker Cahill Smalling Rose

Dier Wilshere

Lallana Rooney Sturridge

Kane
We won't do that though. Roy will pander to the papers, drop Kane, and we'll watch either Vardy or Sturridge trying to play upfront on their own to little effect.
Vardy saw even less ball than Kane, but was right place right time for a poorly struck goal. Agree that he would fare as badly or worse than Kane in that role.
As for our football, I don't think the surface helped TBH, seemed sticky and slow, where as we're used to pinging around our lush wet surface, a lot of players seemed to be leaving the ball behind especially when taking it under pressure on the turn.
Would happily have that team (above) start for the rest of the tourney.

You have to keep Alli in the team. He tries things and no, it doesn't always work, but if he isn't on the pitch at the end we don't win. He has fast feet and is excellent at those one-twos.

Agree with Rooney... He has been good, but his inclusion kills the striker currently.

Alli and Kane both look tired.

The club have put Kane's long term future in doubt by putting far too much work on his shoulders last season.

One of the reason are strikers are burned out by their late twenties are the demands of premier league football and on top of that Kane has played lone striker with no back up.

This was always going to happen.

If I was Kane if have been angry at the club for knackering me out last season. Unacceptable to make him play lone striker all season with no chance of a break.

Kane and Alli look tired

We play a very high energy pressing game and our training is brutal.

Maybe that contributed to the dip at the end of our season.

Poch needs to give players mid season breaks.

Kane is exhausted. We put too much work on his shoulders last season.

Play those in form.

When Kane got called up to the U21's last summer his form in this tournament was sabotaged.

A completely predictable and stupid decision.

I think you've made your point tbh.

Rooney in midfield reminds me of when Spurs used to play Huddlestone.

The fans would go oooh and aaah at his 'raking passes' but they were so un-incisive (what's the opposite of incisive) that they very very rarely actually led to us getting a shooting opportunity.

I dislike him, but Wilshere needs to be in the midfield to actually pass the ball forwards.

That worries me too. The last thing we need is Kane's confidence shot before the start of the new campaign.
Mentally Kane will be fine. However he does seem to be a slow starter in competition. That was my only real concern with him in this tournament. He seems to need to 'get going' and then he hits top form. He just doesn't have the time in such a short month of football.

He was disappointing in the U21 tournament last summer as well. Think he is pretty much burnt out tbh, we need to take the pressure off him next season.

Anyone think Forster should be given a chance? Hart's been a bit poor.

Definitely think Wilshere should get a game against Slovakia.

Eh? U21 won the Toulon tourno this year didnt they? No reason Rashford could not have gone to that for the experience.
Didn't realise the Toulon (remember seeing Steve Slade, Rory Allen and other Spurs greats in that :ROFLMAO:) was still a thing, He's hardly gonna make Rashford play two tournaments in a summer though.

How did our boys do?

Kane had a quiet half which IMO was largely effect by Sterling being an invisible man
Ali was lively and worked the ball well
Dier was taking names but not great crossing to be fair.
Both Walker and Rose were excellent. Probably the best full backs in the comp.

I think that's a bit Spurs-tinted. He gave the ball away and got caught in possession A LOT today.

Fair play to him though he kept plugging away and got his award with a lovely little assist.

:D Amazing its still there. My fault. Should have stated what the tourno was. Still think Rashford was better suited to playing in that that in this. He did nothing when he came on. Not saying he is a bad player but Harry had to do his time etc (y)

Sterling is a joke of a player. I've been saying for months he's absolutely stealing a living at Man City. So ineffective. Don't know why Hodgson doesn't just put Vardy in his place and play with Kane.

How come Wales have their own national anthem but N Ireland use God save the Queen?
