That's an interesting term but undoubtedly any form of positive "leadership" requires the mutual respect of the team members...otherwise it becomes a dictatorship and to coin an awful media term 'the dressing room is lost'. To me a good captain has to show leadership skills and two of those ingredients are to be popular with your squad and also have the footballing prowess to prove your inclusion in the team is merited on playing ability also. By popular I don't mean an easy touch but more in the manner that Poch handles the players....they love him to bits but they also respect his decisions and usually accept them. 'Leadership' is not really a quality as it can be both good or bad...it is a power given to someone and whether or not they abuse that privilege is their decision. That is why to my mind, with Harry being both popular and skilful he should be given the captaincy in order to enhance and improve his leadership qualities.

Just a thought.....
So Gazza would have been a good captain then? ;)

So proud to see him captain the national team today, Harry is a rare breed, a football without the tats or haircut, just a honest, down to earth lad. It is a privilege to be a Spurs supporter with him as our player.

Congratulations to Harry Kane. He did both his club and country proud today with a true Captain's performance. Producing a clinical finish deep into injury time and saving an embarrassing defeat was testament not only to his abilities but also his fighting spirit. Southgate may have been planning to share the armband amongst a few players over the next handful of fixtures but I think Harry did enough today to earn it for the foreseeable future.Every Spurs supporter can feel proud and thankful that we have this guy in our team.....He's one of our own !!

Harry keeps the captaincy for the France game...maybe Southgate has decided to stick with him. Hope so....

Southgate said in a press conference that it's "the same situation as when Cahill captained us" recently for two consecutive games, and he wouldn't be pressed for whether Harry (or anyone else) would be made permanent captain.

Think Henderson had a couple of games too.

I personally don't think Kane needs the pressure of being England captain, as great an honour as it would be for him. The environment which surrounds the England National team is way too toxic currently for someone of his age to be put in such an important role. I'd personally rather it was given to someone like Cahill, and then Kane can take over in 2-3 years when he's a bit more experienced and the current group of players has settled.

Happy for him to see him walk out as captain tonight, but I wont be too upset if this time next year he isn't wearing the armband when we play our first WC fixture.
