The same Dembele that plays in front of the back four, spends most of his time winning the ball back, and has all the attacking end product of a sheep........?

I'm not sure what your definition of a defensive midfielder is now.
Well he’s plays next to a defensive midfielder unless you think we play with two?

Probably click bait though right?

Fundamentally, all newspaper transfer articles are click bait. Some are more reliable than others, and I pass no particular comment on the Mirror article.

My take is:

1) chavski would be idiots to sell Kante;

2) PSG don't have £90m to spend unless they sell Neymar or Mbappe;

3) if chavski are stupid enough to sell him, Mourinho would definitely be prepared to stump up £90m of manure's money, so the quoted price is probably not too far off.

It doesn't matter what I think, the reality is that we regularly play two players in front of the defence, whose role is to either pivot 2 CBs in to 3 (Dier), or to break up the play. You seem to be very hung up on defining midfielders as not defensive, like it's mutually exclusive to any other role.

Even Pogba has played in that position for most of his Utd career. The fact is, very few midfielders are accomplished in defensive traits, which is what makes them coveted - hence why PSG (allegedly) want to pay so much for Kante, and why they would need to pay that much for Chelsea to sell him.

I'm not saying they aren't but we already have Dier and Wanyama who are plenty good enough.
It all depends on opinion I guess.

Personally I’m still not the biggest fan of Dier at DM and would like to see him moved back to CB sooner rather than later.

Because of that I’m very open to making a move for Barrios.

It is unfortunate that we as supporters aren’t really sure what status Winks and Wanyama are at because that would very much influence my decision making on something like this.

Yeah, I'm probably a bigger fan of Dier at DM than most around here. I think his short comings get overstated due to the player he's played next to in Dembele. If Dier played next to a player like Kovacic he would look like a much better player but when he is forced to create more as Dembele wasn't going to do that he has to take more risks with the ball. I'm not blaming Dembele just something I've come to think of. Dier is still capable of some really nice stuff at CM and think people would come back around on him if he had a better player next to him.

My problem with Dier isn’t the creative side it’s the lack in concentration to track runners and the fact he’s a DM but he needs someone aggressive paired with him to harass the opposition.

I find Dier is more cerebral and sits in zones to shepherd the play rather than act as an aggressive ball winner. Dembele did this job for us as well as his water carrying role and while I like Kovacic I think our midfield play would start to look quite static defensively if Kovacic and Dier were paired together. They’d be fine in a counter attacking set up but if we’re looking to press or play a back 3 Dier at DM often has us looking poor.

The back 3 is a major sticking point though. Dier’s main strengths of filling in gaps is much better suited to a back 4. In a back 3 he’s much better suited to simply playing CB and letting the other DMs/CMs take over that role. I think Poch is looking to play more of a back 3 which is a major reason why I think Barrios is a fine purchase because he would fill a need in that type of squad.

Feel like this another Andre Silva type of case where the foreign media kept linking him to us only for him to join another English club.

Personally I don't think we need another midfielder who is predominantly defensive. We already have Big Vic and Dier so I'd much rather us get a CM who can use the ball well to push us forward. Nothing I have seen of Barrios suggests he is that type of player, and as such I would definitely give this one a swerve.

Haven't seen much of him but I thought a lot of his passing v England was very poor. Maybe there's a player in there but we've been saying the same about Onomah for a couple of seasons and he won't cost us a penny. If/when Dembele moves on I want as good a progressive/playmaking CM as we can possibly get since we're still waiting on Winks recovery.

Almost certainly one would have to leave or one move back into defence for this to happen imo.
