For me, and I have said it before, Barrios looks so damn much like a budget version of Casemiro - we've all seen the truckloads of hate he receives those CL-nights because he seemingly always gets away without that second yellow card, or that he fails to get even that first yellow, while everybody is screaming he should have been sent off 50 minutes earlier. Always playing a bit on the edge, goes in for a rash challenge or two per game but never stops running. A real engine going like a damn machine from box to box. Knowing Pochettino, he puts his hands on this guy and he'll be a 60M player within a year or two. I truly believe it.

You know what beats that machine running around the pitch? A player passing the ball. Luka Modric will always be a better player than Ngolo Kante. We need to find a Modric, not a Kante.

Also, what defensive midfield players are going for 60 million?

They are both important...

how much to Real Madrid win the season after Makelele left? in my view a DM is now one of the most important players on the pitch

I see what you're saying but Casimero today is basically irreplaceable for Real. I'd say he is one of the first people in the starting 11 for them. Just makes the whole team tick, and allows for Modric and Kroos to put the majority of their focus on what they are best at, i.e finding key passes going forward and dictating the game, while Casimero keeps it clean and takes the hard work defensively.

I'd put the likes of Kante, Casemiro, Fernandinho and possibly a couple of more players in that 50-60m bracket.

They be worth that value to their team but no one is buying defensive midfielders for that much money. Like I said we have Wanyama and Dier for that job so he would be an unnecessary use of funds from our budget.

Haven't Keita and Fred just gone for near enough that amount in the last week or two??
Both of whom have way more technical ability than just running up and down the pitch and breaking up play (not saying thats all Barrios does but its clearly his biggest strength). Fred is going to play in a 3 with Matic and Pogba and Fabinho was bought to be the holding player for Liverpool. He'd probably be the most expensive one on the market and he didn't go for that much.

Why are people talking about £60 million?

The release clause for Barrios is less than £15 million.

The article is a couple of weeks old, but I've not seen any suggestions that Barrios has renegotiated his Boca contract during the WC.

-----------------------------------------------

Boca Juniors are making an impassioned plea to Wilmar Barrios to postpone a move to Tottenham until the January transfer window after Spurs stepped up their interest in the Colombian international.

The Argentinean giants have offered the talented midfielder a new contract with a significantly elevated salary in a bid to keep hold of him for their upcoming Copa Libertadores campaign.

Boca qualified for the knockout phase of South America’s version of the Champions League which resumes in August and they want to keep together their squad, including former Arsenal target Cristian Pavon, but with Barrios they have little control due to the player’s release clause of just under £14.5m.

That’s your call but he’s played as a cm all last season and will do the same next season with Fabinho behind him.

It's not my call, it's quite literally what Keita defines himself as. In pretty much those exact words, a week ago.

Let's not turn this into some sort of pedantic as fuck thread where people start banging on about their interpretation of how a holding midfielder isn't a defensive midfielder, and a central midfielder can't be an attacking or defensive midfielder, and a trequartista is more of a forward than a midfielder, etc.

Whichever way you look at it, or want to label it, plenty of midfielders that do more defending than attacking are coveted and bought for handsome fees.

OK - thanks.

The price for Kante is allegedly £90 million. So, yes, @dtxspurs is correct . Top class DMs don't go for £60 milllion. They go for half as much again.....

The fact that the price for Barrios is c£14 million plus agent fees makes him value in today's market.

As with any player coming from a foreign league, there's no guarantee he'd successfully adapt. But £14-15 million is the price of a bang average English midfielder.

That’s just the same as dele believing he’s a CM though.

It might be where he thinks he should play but it’s not where he plays.

Put it this way Keita is far more a Dembele than a Dier/Waynama

Even worse - It's actually the price of an N'jie or an N'koudou, neither of whom have looked like PL players.

Who's buying Kante for 90 million? Thats my point. Because there is value at the holding midfielder. Why would PSG buy Kante for 90 million when they could buy Fabinho for 35?

You can find players at that position to do that job for reasonable fees.

The same Dembele that plays in front of the back four, spends most of his time winning the ball back, and has all the attacking end product of a sheep........?

I'm not sure what your definition of a defensive midfielder is now.
