Is that right? He's taken us to 3 semis and a final?

What is slightly disappointing about those cup runs is with the exception of Arsenal this season, the best team we have beaten during those runs to the semis and final was Watford. Of the 15 ties we won to progress to the 3 semi-finals and 1 final just 6 of them were against Premier League teams - in alphabetical order: Arsenal, Brighton, Newcastle, Swansea, Watford and West Ham. It does feel a bit like as soon as we've met a really decent side we've gone out, both domestically and in Europe. And sometimes before even that!

Top 4 ultimately is so we can win more trophies otherwise top 4 is pointless so to me question is trophy or more trophies, I would obviously chose more trophies but that requires actually investing all the extra money from CL in the team, I expect to see that happening clearly from this summer, no more property projects, in Pochs words today in reference to completing infrastructure "And in the moment you get all this ready, that can no longer be an excuse" I expect no more PR BS from this summer on.

Unless the point, the end-game, the raison d'etre is to stay in the top 4 and anything else is decoration? A bit like one of those teams lower down the league, Brighton for example, who's sole ambition is to remain in the Premier League?

It pisses me off that people make out this is a choice, because it shields poch from a bigger problem

Poch's record in the cup competitions knockout stages has been terrible
So what you’re saying is the last three seasons we’ve had:
  • 2 x FA Cup semi finals (plus LC semi this year)
  • 3 x qualifying for Champions league

And this is a problem because.... o_O

Looking at his record from since he took over:

3rd - vs Nottingham Forest - W
4th - vs Brighton - W
5th - vs Newcastle - W
SF - vs Sheffield Utd - W
F - vs Chelsea - L

2015 FA Cup
3rd - vs Burnley - W after replay
4th - vs Leicester - L

2015 Europa League
R32 - Fiorentina - L

2016 League Cup -
3rd - vs Arsenal - L

2016 FA Cup
3rd - vs Leicester - W after replay
4th - vs Colchester - W
5th - vs Palace - L

2016 Europa League
R32 - Fiorentina - W
R16 - Dortmund - L

2017 League Cup -
3rd - vs Gillingham - W
4th - vs Liverpool - L

2017 FA Cup
3rd - vs Villa - W
4th - vs Wycombe - W
5th - vs Fulham - W
QF - vs Millwall - W
SF - vs Chelsea - L

2017 Europa League
R32 - Gent - L

2018 League Cup -
3rd - vs Barnsley - W
4th - vs West Ham - L

2018 FA Cup
3rd - vs Wimbledon - W
4th - vs Newport - W after replay
5th - vs Rochdale - W after replay
QF - vs Swansea - W
SF - vs Manchester United - L

2018 Champions League
R16 - Juventus - L

2019 League Cup -
3rd - vs Watford - W
4th - vs West Ham - W
5th - vs Arsenal - W
SF - vs Chelsea - L on pens

2019 FA Cup
3rd - vs Palace - L

2019 Champions League
R16 - Dortmund - TBC

This statement as hard as it is for some people can be true:
Poch has overachieved in the league with us but he has underachieved in the cup competitions

The only decent competition he has beaten in a knockout stage is Arsenal this season, even then they are a weaker team overall imo and Leicester in 2016
BUT WHAT ABOUT HIS WIN PERCENTAGE????

Is that right? He's taken us to 3 semis and a final?
And beaten only Arsenal of note in that time. Let’s call a spade a spade, we’ve not been very good at all. Why is that so difficult to just accept?

I’m a realistic type. What I’m not going to do is be blinded by my bias and love for the club, and excuse every shortcoming with a load of nonsense about how we’re at so big of a disadvantage to everyone else.

Some posters in here are like a bunch of battered wives constantly making excuses for your husband in case he a) batters you again or b) leaves for someone else. It’s fucking pathetic! Criticising the manager doesn’t in any way invalidate any of the good work he’s done over the past few years, it just means he’s human and makes mistakes. But rather than accept that, we’re now pretending trophies don’t matter, even though we’ve only won 3 in nearly 30 years. The same cups that seem to be good enough for the bigger clubs are somehow not big enough for mighty THFC. Nah, we’re only interested in “putting on the pressure” in the cups we’ve got no chance of winning. It’s fucking laughable.

The bottom line is that, for all his talent, for as long as Pochettino fails to win anything with this squad, his ability as a manager at the very highest level will continue to be called into question, and rightly so. He needs to stop lowering expectations and making excuses. Winning a cup might not suddenly turn us into Barca, but it certainly isn’t going to hinder us in any way, so why are we so adamant that we don’t want to?

Sometimes winning a trophy can kickstart a run of success for a team.

I understand both arguments.

I will pick a trophy over top 4 every time. Too many “fans” care about projects, spreadsheets and financial results. Stick them on the wall and reminisce in twenty years lads!

Trying to work out if some of you are on a wind up, have been listening to too much talksport or just spent a whole day being rinsed by your mates

Do you honestly think Poch doesn’t want to win a trophy? That he purposely threw away a ‘penalty shootout’ and FA Cup match (both without our three main attacking players)

£6m Vs £60m isn't the whole story.

Sponsors like trophies.
When the marketing men are trying to justify the expense to their board, (a group that will know next to nothing about football), then a few cups reassures them that this is money well spent, in my view.

So I think a cup would have helped secure a stadium sponsor next season. If we went out the cups this week just because they are nothing but an exercise in building egos, then MP has seriously miscalculated.

However for me personally, I'd rather watch games against Barcelona or Real to a cup final. That's the level we should be measuring ourselves against. If that is what MP meant, then he is right, but it is not what he said.

Do you know what sponsors want? They want people to buy their product.

They don't care about trophies - they care about the number of supporters who will be loyal to sponsors.

DO you know how to grow supporter base? Its not by winning the odd cup. Its by winning consistently - so that people feel good about going to every match at the stadium, and proudly wearing shirts and other apparel.

No it wouldn't, I think we're currently ahead of schedule and I think the board are smart enough to know there are going to be times when we don't qualify for the CL. Nothing spectacular has happened in terms of buying players since we've been in the CL. We're going to continue buying low cost players for sometime yet, CL or not.
But I think no CL will make it harder to keep players and mean we have to transition a larger portion of the squad.

My wishlist for any given season, in order what would/does make me the happiest:

1) Win the PL and/or CL
2) Win the FA Cup/League Cup/Europa League
3) Finish above Arsenal in the league
4) Finish in the CL places in the league
5) Beat Arsenal in the league and preferably do the double over them
6) Beat Chelsea in the league and preferably do the double over them
7) Beat West Ham in the league and preferably do the double over them
8) Don't get relegated

Achieving any one of 1) to 3) would make a season 'good' (or much, much better, obviously) for me.

Achieving 4) without achieving any of 1) to 3) would be a satisfactory-but-flawed season for me.

Achieving combinations of 5) to 7) without achieving any higher numbers would be some consolation against an otherwise underwhelming season for me.

Achieving 8) stops me from kicking the nearest cat.

Thats a problem because he gets constantly beaten by teams a level below us or similar to us. Only beating one team that has been on a similar level in arsenal, even arsenal could be described as a level below

On the 3 semi finals we reached you mentioned, of the 11 teams we beat in 13 matches to get there, only 4 were premier league teams. Of which one got relegated and the other two were Watford and West Ham.
I wish Poch took the league as seriously as he takes the Cup competitions.

Much higher win percentage in Domestic Cups than the league...
Well considering we face a lot of Non-PL teams, you would hope that it is

Both ?, but at this moment in time we are not built for both, we do not possess the necessary quality, shame, but if Poch is saying that a Top 4 and CL runs are more important at this time, i guess I am with him , but something in me wishes I could tell Poch, cmon man Seriously you are about to lose some great players. Players would want to win things.
