So many people are freaking out about the £30m payment, without seeming to recognise that this is the reality post-the new TV deal.

£30m today is the same as £20m would have been in the last window; that is to say, a 50% price increase, matching the 50% increase in TV revenue. Without acknowledging this, you're completely mis-analysing how much £30m actually is.

£30m might be a slight overpayment - for a (just) 27 year old with 44 French caps - but not by much. If we'd paid £20m in the last window, most people would have thought that was about par.

Well, £30m is the new £20m. It's the same bit of business.

That article cites Liverpool failing to capitalise when they got CL football a few years ago, but fails to mention that they sold Suarez, the very player who dragged them to that second place finish. We haven't sold a single player who was part of our first team. Also, not bothered by the quotes about Arsenal, for any young football player, you always follow the club that your idol plays for.
That's even more damning, that they didn't adequately replace him and strengthen for CL.

We haven't sold anyone that was in our first team (although Chadli and Mason arguably played their part with their appearances, scoring important goals etc) yet we finished third in a weakened premier league, and this summer has seen the natural reaction to that, with the usual suspects spending unprecedented money on strenghtening. We haven't kept pace with that, trying to play the brinkmanship game again... which frankly will no longer cut it. We have to be prepared to spend £50m on a cutting edge player, and we have to be prepared to pay the £100k plus wages.

I don't think this has been a disaster, but the usual mucking about has resulted in us pretty much standing still.

If anything this season is going to be like the difficult second album... trying to keep the success of last season going while trying to change things... it's going to take quite the effort to get that top 4 place again IMHO.

I said we should go for Sissoko at the end of last season and received a mountain of neg reps because he's sh*t apparently

He's a very astute and versatile signing, adding further strength, power and pace to our squad.

I really don't see the problem with paying £30m for him, yes it's a tad inflated but a good 90% of premier league and even championship signings this summer have ranged from over the top to damn right ridiculous. Unless you're purchasing from a club with severe financial problems or trigger a release clause, then the days of finding a bargain or a good deal are gone.

With regard to our other signings, glad we've added depth and covered our areas of weakness from last season.

The only position we arguably needed extra cover for was an attacking central midfielder but even with the players we've now got, when would they play?

In terms of future windows, we can now focus on snapping up hot prospects and if we can keep the current crop together, we should realistically only be looking at 1-2 at the most, senior players.

I'll take 6th and win the champions league.

We've definitely strengthened the squad and now Poch has options to change the way we play if he needs to.

Personally I hoped we'd be looking to improve the 1st team but a deeper squad should mean we can at least maintain the same performances as last season on a more consistent basis.

I don't know if I want to rate this optimistic, like, funny, agree, disagree (as we should be aiming for winning the league as well), winner, friendly or creative I really wish you could give more than one rating.

Well done sir.

Most important bit of business was keeping Dembele. The suspension although annoying has given him more time to get fitter, an on form fit Dembele in itself is priceless as we saw last year.

Sissoko, GK, Wanyamma and Jansen are going to improve the squad, our starting 11 was never the issue last year. It was changing the game when plan A didnt work. We have already seen we can now play 2 up top, we have pace and strength, and some decent cover for Dier and Dembele.

Only gap I see is the lack of ball playing midfielder in the mold of Modric/Carrick, but I dont think our style of play really needs that at the moment.

Thank you my sweet prince. Either way win the league and knocked out of champs league in quarters, or win the champions league and finish 6th.. id rather win the league however.

Another way to look at our transfer business: wanyama (£11m), Janssen (£17m), Nkoudou (£11m) and Sissoko(£30m) for a combined £70m (ish) is incredible value in this market.

I still feel some tricks were missed. Could we really not do better than Sissoko for £30m? In a week when Witsel was sold for £18m I really think that we could have done.

Nkoudou is a risk, but sometimes you have to take these type of risks to unearth gems.

Weirdly I'm most excited about Pau Lopez. I think he could be great as long as there was an option to buy included.

Other players who went for £30m or less this window: Kante, Pjanic, Mkhitaryan, Morata, Hummels, Sanches, Gotze, Gundogan, Volland, Kramer, Werner.

This isn't "the going rate", we got properly mugged off.

Sometimes its easy to get lost in the transfer values. Whats important to recognise is

A) Pochettino is ruthless but he exactly knows what he wants

B) Regardless of money involved. Daniel Levy has backed his manager for first time with exact signing Poch was lookking for. Eventhough he still played his tricks along the way - when it mattered Levy backed his manager for first time.

Morata had a buy back clause with Real, and Kante had a release clause. Mkhitaryan had 1 year left on his contract, as did Hummels and Gundogan. Werner signed for RB Leipzig (so not exactly in the same mold as everyone else). Renato Sanches is 18 and huge gamble.

Additionally, Sanches signed for Bayern Munich, Gundogan signed for Man City, Gotze went back to his boyhood club, Hummels signed for Bayern Munich, Morata Signed for Real Madrid, Kante signed for Chelsea, Mkhitaryan signed for Man Utd, Pjanic Signed for Juventus.

So in short, all the players listed either went in the last year of the deal and/or to clubs that we cannot comepte with either financially, or in terms of prestige.

I am not ecstatic about the signing of Sissoko, but everyone you listed is a false equivalency.

It's been a reasonable window. Nothing more nothing less.

The good:

  • We've got back-up for Kane which is good.
  • We've added Wanyama which is useful additional steel in midfield.
  • We've swapped out Chadli/N'Jie for Sissoko/N'Koudou which gives us a bit more pace and presence as options going forwards.
  • Then we've got rid of quite a few players who simply didn't play very much last season and were therefore taking up squad space and wages which have been freed up.
The bad:
  • For me we look light on quality replacements in a few areas. Considering we have the Champions League this year where we won't be able to rest players (as we did at times in the Europa) I am very worried about burnout in some areas.
  • We don't have a midfielder who can pass the ball particularly effectively. Lot's of defensive nous and strength but not a great deal going forwards.
  • We are very reliant on Eriksen getting his form back as I'm not sure where else the spark comes from. This is presumably why we were after Isco.
So yeah. A reasonable window. I suspect if it wasn't for the stadium we'd have flashed the cash a bit more, but the stadium is important so I'm fine with that.

Overall grade: B

I can guarantee you that most of those players will be on far more than our top earners Lloris and Kane, whille I'd be surprised if Sissoko was on over £70k...

If a player looks like good value, in other words cheap, "There has to be a reason. Probably a trouble-maker."

If the price looks fair, "Why weren't any of the big boys in for him? Can't be that good. "

If he looks expensive "We were mugged."

Given that's it is therefore impossible to buy a good player at a decent price, I think Levy & Co have done a reasonable job.

Well, for one, we can compete financially, because we literally just did compete financially by spending £30m on a player as they all did. I understand that we don't offer the same wages as everyone else (I'm asuming that's what you meant), this also doesn't exclude the players that we also could've spent £30m on, many I can think of that would've been better value than this. I'm not saying I wanted all of those players instead (although it would've been nice), I'm saying this idea of Sissoko as "value" is absurd. £30m. Moussa Sissoko. We got mugged.
