Generally, not a great day at the office. Some bright points ( Sandro ) and some not so bright points.

Can anyone confirm if Pav touched the ball tonight?

Assou-Ekotto, VDV and Pav had absolute shockers!!!!!

Modric was wasted on the right, Redknapp made poor tactical decisions and they cost us, he should have bought on Kranj instead of Pav...

Friedel I thought was a little less assured than usual and his distribution was a let down.

Walker had a poor game, but with VDV and then Modric in front of him he had no protection throughout.

King had a few really classy moments, but he also struggled a little with being run at with pace tonight and could've done with Kaboul by his side.

Gallas can be awarded almost the same description as King, down the need for Kaboul.

Ekotto had his worst game in a long time tonight and lost Sturridge for the goal.

Van der Vaart was clearly not fit.

Sandro was a monster, I think when all are fit in midfield again and we go back to one DM it'll be hard to leave him out.

Parker looked a little tired, but I can't fault how dogged and determined he was on a number of occasions.

Bale is a machine, he was fabulous and I just wished we'd got him more into the game. Wonderful assist and if Adebayor had powered instead of placed then he'd have had another. Should have hit the target though when he blasted over.

Modric was pretty good in the first half but in the second half he was lost on the right.

Adebayor scored a good goal, he was unfairly booked and he had to cope with their cheating scum constantly trying to get him sent off. He had a perfectly good goal ruled out yet again, and but for a brilliant piece of Terry defending he'd have had another (though maybe he could have powered it).

I don't understand what Redknapp means when he described Pav as a good technical player. He has no touch, no passing and no mobility. He has a great shot and that's it. He didn't lack for effort but he was very poor.

friedel 6 - good save from ramires made up for a spill from mata i think it was

walker 6 - had to do the job of fullback and winger which he found difficult, mugged off by drogba in the 1st half but got away with it
gallas 7 - did well
king 6 - at fault for their goal, not at his best
ekotto 5 - asleep for their goal, too many long balls down the line

sandro 7 - his tackle set us on our way for the goal, did some nice things going forward too
parker 6 - looked shattered after 10 minutes
modric 6.5 - some good, some bad. wasted on the right

vdv 6 - one great ball through to bale or ade, can't remember, not involved a great deal
bale 7.5 - great run for the goal, another great ball to ade at the end
adebayor 7.5 - good goal, involved in a lot of our play, drifted out of it 2nd half

pav 5 - barely touched the ball which isn't all his own fault but we needed better

harry 6 - good selection to begin with, poor substitution

Love the way BC can see every time Modric doesn't track but failed to See Parker doing exactly the same a fair few times, at one point Sandro ran 10 metres past Parker to track the man he (Parker) should have been tracking. And there were a couple of occasions where the ball was close to Parker who should have gained possession but he was too slow to turn and a Chav much further away than him took the ball

If Sandro and Parker did the work of three men tonight then three of those men were Sandro.

This is one of those times when Harry thought...........everyone told me not to bring on Pav against Sunderland and guess what............Pav scored the winner!
I did the same thing tonight and guess what?................he was a pile of shite as usual!

management by numbers.

going two in the middle against Ramires, Meireles and Mikel/Romeu is just luncay (even if those 2 do the work of 4 men  )

i don't know why friedel has 8 votes, he made one good save and spilt one straight out to sturridge. other than that i don't recall him doing a great deal.

I disagree that we played poorly two seasons ago against them at home. We created a dozen more great chances, and although they had a lot of the ball in midfield they rarely troubled us until the last ten minutes when they became desperate. We deserved to win that game by a lot more than one goal, if it weren't for our shit finishing. (Caveat - we did play against ten men for a good amount of time.)

Chelsea is indeed a very hard team to dominate possession against (they have the highest average possession in the league), but sometimes they have chosen to do so as a strategy this season. Here I think they may have hesitated to commit players forward since we've been catching teams on the break.

Our fullbacks' individual defending is rather inconsistent, but I've seen much better from our back four. If anything, it's often been our deep defense bailing us out since we don't seem to press until they're well in our half. I hope Kaboul, btw, is reinstated; he doesn't deserve to be dropped, and both King and Gallas are admirable servants but not the lynchpins of our future.

I've certainly seen Modric press well before (although still sporadically), mainly at home. Bale and Lennon are capable of backtracking, though they don't often tackle/intercept and actually win the ball.

Our individual inconsistency leads me to suggest that our fitness is an issue, as I thought it was last season. Poor Ade is starting to look exhausted. Parker will never last the season at this rate. Walker and BAE have played Europa and cup games on top of every PL game. I can't see someone like Fergie playing the same XI every week even if they were all fit, the other top teams are always rotating.

We need to start injecting a bit more energy and hunger, and by that I don't mean Pav, since he is a black hole of a player. It's no surprise Sandro looked better than most today - not only is he quality, but he's had some rest. I know Niko, Charlie, Bassong etc haven't looked great recently but they've also not had much game time to regain sharpness.

January reinforcements are critical imo. I expect Lennon, Dawson, Hudd, Defoe, and Shiny New Striker to come back refreshed. But in the meantime, I'd be willing to really throw the dice and bring on a fringe player like Falque. At least their hunger to prove themselves will have them working hard, unlike a Pav.

King 5 - awful defending for the equaliser - should have played to the whistle. Skinned by Sturridge, lucky to get a last ditch tackle in. Between him and Gallas, one of them should have picked up Ramires for the sitter that he missed.

Lucky? Lucky?! That was not lucky, my friend. That was King at his best, timing his tackle to perfection, knowing well that Sturridge had the legs to beat him.

Some people do not appreciate class when they see one.

In my opinion, King played very well tonight. Long live the King.

If anyone rates BAE or Walker above a 5 they are pissed or blind stupid. You have to bear in mind that their main purpose in the team is to defend and they both showed numoerus tendencies to not track, not press and not tackle. No wonder we're so bloody open.

Why was Pav bought on? Surely Niko swapping for a like for like would have made sense?

We played decent but I see it as a real chance missed. That was the worst Chelsea team to visit the Lane in years and we let them off the hook. Once gaining the lead we should have turned the screw, but we didn't. We stood off and waited for them to riposte.

Chance missed.

Can I also just add...

Why the fuck was Kaboul not playing? He should be first choice and then Gallas or King slot around him.

Because of the clean sheet and good performance King and Gallas gave v. Sundy.

Hindsight's always 20/20, although I think 'Arry made the wrong decision not starting Kaboul.

Nothing much to add to general drift of comments.

I have read elsewhere that Kaboul injured himself in the warm up...might have been a hamstring...I forget ...

Bale seemed our only effective attacking weapon 7

Ade's touch has deserted him for several games now .He seems less than the deadly player who started the season with us . Loads of effort/chasing down keeps him involved...but we really need him at his best . 6
