Crap team at home. A good start is absolutely vital, the importance of the fixture list is much underrated IMO.

A home match would be ideal. Certainly don't want to start with an away fixture at one of the newly promoted sides (before their spirits have been broken by a few drubbings!) Failing that, an away match at one with one of the big boys - Utd or Liverpool. Get it out of the way early - and of course, I'm banking on us steaming away from match one at full pelt following Ramos' brutal pre-season...

Pompey away like in 05/06. Lucky own goal, awesome finish from striker and clean sheet as omens for the rest of the season. And then Hammers at HOME last game of the season to get into the CL. We will win 4-3 with Alan Hutton side footing home in the last minute.

Nice.

Didn't we play them at home in May 2004 when they last won the league?

 I'm not saying that it has happened every season since the dawn of time. It was a light-hearted nod to the times of year we have played them recently. Forget it.

Sorry, i left out the details.

Its Berbatov on 6 mins with a half volley on the edge of the box after a clever one two between Modric and Keane.

Its half time at 1-0 to Spurs with the possession at 68% in the final third of the Portsmouth half, 6% in the middle of the park and 26% in Spurs third.

Just the one yellow card at half time. Muntari for a high tackle on Modric. Modric is ok at the end and shrugs it off.

The 2nd half will see Keane with a tap in from 6 yards on the end of a Gareth Bale cross from the left, 66 mins in. Giovani will add to the score on 78 mins with beautiful shot, cutting in from the right onto his left foot, to tuck into the bottom corner. It comes after Campbell tries a cruyff turn and falls arse over tit, Giovani capitilises.

Possession will finish with 72% in the Portsmouth final 3rd, 12% in the centre and 16% in the Spurs 3rd.

Campbell and Defoe both get yellow cards in the 2nd half to add to Muntari's in the 1st. Both for discent. Hutton gets a yellow card for Spurs after blocking a potential counter attack from Portsmouth.

if you look back at previous seasons, we are due to play a midtable team. almost 100% sure we won't play a newly promoted team.

i think we are looking at playing man u home or chelsea away within the first 3 or 4 games.

it's all about the run in, and also i reckon teams play better when all the tough ones come at once.

if i see some monster of man u then chelsea then ass anal then randomly fulham then liverpool, then that's actually a good thing coz the team tends to keep stepped up

I'll be happy if we can avoid a team who has NOT appointed a new manager or been promoted. Home or away is by the by as you play two games in the first week and a stumble away can be put right with a nice home game afterwards - as long as it's not against sodding Everton.

In fact, an away game can be a bit of a brucie bonus if you play a side under pressure/spotlight themselves. So, maybe I'd be happy with something like:

Sat - Liverpool (a)
Wed - West Brom (h) (ideally with Kaboul and Trbaratrabetta playing for them)
Sat - Middlesboro (a)

See I don't buy into newly promoted teams being a difficult first game. There is a clear step up in class between established premier teams and the championship. Its them testing the water in a new division not us. They should be fodder to teams like the big four and Tottenham, Villa, Everton, Man City, Newcastle, Blackburn etc

We should fully expect to do the double over all the newly promoted teams and anything else we should consider as a failure. I'm sure thats how the big four all think in judging success?
