What would Bill Nic think of all this?, the way the game has changed from having about three or four defensive players at the back and about five or so attacking players. As the years have gone by players have been droping from attacking positions to defensive ones where today we are saying the way forward for us is to have one striker on the pitch. I agree that to be succesfull we will have to adopt such tactics but i'm not sure i'll enjoy it as much.

If the system is played well then the team has 2 highly attacking fullbacks and a front 4 (the 3+1) who have almost no defensive responsibilities, this makes it more offensive than 4-4-2 where generally the full backs aren't as attacking. Most importantly, however, attacking teams who play it well control the ball from the midfield and this is the key to playing attacking football. It seems a lot of people confuse 4-5-1 with 4-2-3-1 just because they both have 1 up top, I'm not as tactically eloquent as IOMLS but the 2 systems aren't the same at all.

Bill Nic was always looking at new innovations, and would have been at the cutting edge of modern coaching - like the old dog Fergie, he was not afraid to learn new things.

Germany only had one striker - yet they scored 4 goals against England and Argentina, formations are meaningless, it is how hard the team works and the intent they show when they get the ball that counts.

Redknapp was on Talksport loast night, and spoke of clear indications that he will likely play a 4-5-1 (4-2-3-1) formation next season, most probably for the European games, and certain games away from home.

I think Pav's hold up and passing making him ideal for this role. He is our best passer of our forwards

I don't think any of our forwards would thrive as a lone striker. Pavlyuchenko is too weak and could easily be taken care of by two centre backs.
